The major label works of alt-rock act Dinosaur Jr. have recently been revisited by Cherry Red in a series of expanded reissues.
At the beginning of the 1990s, the Amherst, Massachusetts-based trio had issued three records across the prior decade, the latter two on the seminal SST label. 1988's Bug topped the U.K. independent albums chart, after lead single "Freak Scene" reached the Top 5 of the country's indie singles chart. But creative tensions led singer/guitarist J. Mascis to fire bassist Lou Barlow, who would focus full-time on his former side project Sebadoh.
Now temporarily reduced to a duo with drummer Patrick "Murph" Murphy, Mascis recorded most of the group's next album (and first for Sire Records), 1991's Green Mind, on his own, opting for a quieter, layered sound. Eventually, bassist Mike Johnson joined as a full-time member, embarking on several tours with other upstart alternative acts like Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine and Blur. Follow-up album Where You Been, released in 1993, featured Johnson and Murph as full-blown members alongside Mascis, and also earned the group their highest chart placements yet: No. 10 on the U.K. album chart and No. 50 in America. (The single "Start Choppin" also reached the Top 5 of Billboard's modern rock chart.)
The band's last two Sire albums, Without a Sound (1994) and Hand It Over (1997), were again recorded as a duo, this time featuring Mascis with some input from Johnson; the former album featured another Top 5 modern rock hit in "Feel The Pain." Afterward, Mascis retired the Dinosaur Jr. moniker, but revived it alongside the original line-up with Barlow and Murph in 2005; the group has released four albums between 2007 and 2016. (Earlier this year, "Over Your Shoulder," a track from Without a Sound, became a surprise chart hit in Japan.)
The expansions of Green Mind, Where You Been, Without a Sound and Hand It Over are available as 2CD editions, each boasting rare B-sides, non-album tracks and unreleased live sets with each title. (2LP cutdowns, available on colored vinyl and featuring the cream of each bonus offering, are also available, as are download and streaming equivalents of the 2CD sets.) Keith Cameron of MOJO has penned liner notes for each title, drawing from new interviews with J. Mascis.
All four reissues are available now. Check out the full details and order links below!
