La-La Land's Annual Black Friday Blowout Offers 'Star Trek,' 'Karate Kid,' Disaster Scores and More

December 3, 2019 By The Second Disc 4 Comments

It wouldn't be Black Friday without an announcement of one last killer batch of archival soundtracks from La-La Land Records. The impressive slate of titles the label announced are on sale now, and we've got the scoop on all of them!

First up, it's a second, long-promised collection of music from Star Trek Voyager, the third live-action spinoff based on Gene Roddenberry's iconic sci-fi series that aired between 1966 and 1969. Hot off the success of Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994) and Deep Space Nine (1993-1999), Voyager (1995-2001) was set contemporaneously with those two series, with the titular vessel and its crew, led by Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), attempting to find their way out of the Delta Quadrant, some 70,000 light years from Earth. Jerry Goldsmith, who composed brilliant scores for Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, created a stirring main title, and familiar Trek composers like Jay Chattaway and Dennis McCarthy provided music for the series' run. This 4CD set, limited to 3000 copies, features scores from the series' run, including Chattaway's work on the two-part series finale. Ford A. Thaxton, James Nelson, Mark Banning, and Lukas Kendall serve as the set's producers, with Nelson editing and mastering; Mark Banning designs the set's packaging and 40-page booklet, including liner notes by Randall D. Larson.

Next, La-La Land is in fighting shape with Bill Conti's score to The Karate Kid. Back in print for its 35th anniversary (after multiple releases in the last decade or so, as part of a Varese Sarabande box set then on its own), Conti's score evokes his work for Rocky to add color to the story of Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), an awkward teen transplanted from New Jersey to California. He finds peace and purpose with the help of his apartment's handyman, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita, in an Oscar-nominated turn), who teaches him self-defense to compete in a local karate tournament. The Karate Kid spawned three sequels and two seasons of a well-received follow-up series, Cobra Kai, which focuses on Daniel's teen tormentor Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) as an adult struggling to find his own purpose - and crossing paths with LaRusso yet again. This presentation of The Karate Kid features seven unreleased bonus tracks and alternates! Neil S. Bulk produced the disc, mixed by Michael McDonald and mastered by Doug Schwartz; Dan Goldwasser is the package designer, and Al Kaplan's liner notes include new commentary from Conti and an introduction from Daniel-san himself, Ralph Macchio! This set also tops out at 3000 copies.

It's back into space for a 25th anniversary presentation of the score to Stargate, a breakthrough release for composer David Arnold! Roland Emmerich's quirky sci-fi epic, starring Kurt Russell and James Spader, helped put both director and composer on the map; the duo would reteam for Independence Day (1996) and Godzilla (1998), while Arnold would earn acclaim for five James Bond scores between 1997 and 2008. Now expanded to two discs and packed with alternates, Stargate sounds better than ever here! Arnold co-produces the album with Bulk, Schwartz serves as mastering engineer and Goldwasser designs the album package, with notes by Tim Grieving. This, too, is limited to 3000 copies.

Fans of Golden Age scoring and Westerns will be bowled over by LLL's fourth release: Nevada Smith - The Paramount Westerns Collection! This 4CD set, limited to 1000 units, presents 11 scores from Paramount's vaults to Western pictures released between 1949 and 1968. With works by Alfred Newman, Nelson Riddle, David Raskin, Franz Waxman, Victor Young and others, this is a real treat for film music historians and lovers alike. John Takis and Frank K. DeWald serve as producers and liner note writers; Chris Malone has restored the audio to its highest quality and Goldwasser once again designs the set (down to its incredible cover).

Fans of La-La Land's big box set from last Black Friday - the 7CD collection of John Williams' scores to the first three Harry Potter films - are in for another treat from the legendary composer. The label is expanding his three scores for "disaster movies" of the '70s: 1972's The Poseidon Adventure and 1974's The Towering Inferno and Earthquake. Poseidon and Inferno, both produced by Irwin Allen, kicked off a wave of big budget epics with ensemble casts surviving freak occurrences - a capsized ocean liner and a building set ablaze; Earthquake, produced by Mark Robson and Filmakers Group, was an example of Allen's influence over the box office. Williams was the common thread between these three films, and his bold, thematic scores helped establish the composer as one of the most talented in Hollywood even before JAWS and Star Wars made him a comparative megastar. Poseidon, previously released by La-La Land, features a brilliant new remastering and additional cues that were not present on that release, including the Oscar-winning "The Morning After," the Oscar-winning theme song performed by Maureen McGovern (and not written by Williams). The Towering Inferno, available only in fragmented form on a long-out-of-print disc from Film Score Monthly nearly 20 years ago, is restored to proper glory and paired alongside the original Warner Bros. Records soundtrack album presentation. That's also the case for Universal's Earthquake, which includes the original re-recorded soundtrack album for MCA alongside the premiere release of the original score. Williams' longtime restorer Mike Matessino handles production, restoration, mixing and mastering, while Jim Titus designs the striking new packages (three jewel cases in their own slipcase). Liner notes are by Jeff Bond (for the two Allen-produced films) and Jon Burlingame for Earthquake. This one is limited to 5000 units.

FINALLY, ''THE TOWERING INFERNO'' is in it's complete form. Containing almost 20 additional tracks that were NEVER released. I have the '' FILM SCORE MONTHLY" release which was extended and edited. But i will not get rid of it. The sound was great and i really liked the front and back cover of the cd. i bought it back in the spring of 2002. However, the front cover of this new complete re-release is bland. it looks like a drab painting of the actors and actresses. ''EARTHQUAKE'' is finally in full form as the complete film score is finally released and also has a few never released tracks. I really like the front cover. Looks super ! As far as ''THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE'' goes, on the original ''LA LA LAND'' release, it has the alternate version of the ''END TITLE''. On this new re-release, that track is cut out. Why is that ? And on the original release, it contains 3 versions of the song ''THE MORNING AFTER''. 2 of which is sung by RENEE ARMAND. The 3rd version is a instrumental cut. On this new re-release, 4 the first time ever, the 4th version of that song having MAUREEN McGOVERN singing it, is finally released. It was the only other track that was never released. This brand new box set is DEFINATELY worth purchasing. I will purchase my copy, however, i will not be able to get it until the spring. But that's ok. This just came out and the price of $75 dollars is going nowhere. it'll still be that price when spring arrives. So glad that FINALLY all 3 soundtracks are complete. As far as the alternate version of ''THE END CREDITS'' , i will keep the original ''LA LA LAND'' release.

I want to make a correction. When i said that the the track '' THE MORNING AFTER'' by MAUREEN McGOVERN was the only track that was never released, it's both true and UN-TRUE. It was previously released as a single on ''20TH CENTURY RECORDS''. But NEVER released on CD until now. Sorry 4 the mis-quote.

I failed to mention the front cover of ''THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE''. They did a splended and great job on that. Beautifully designed even though it is a condensed version of one of the original theatrical posters. All 3 front covers of all 3 films are that, i just don't like the ''TOWERING INFERNO'' cover. A REAL poor choice for a CD cover.

They really recorded ''THE TOWERING INFERNO'' soundtrack on cd in reverse. What they should have done was on ''DISC 1'', record the 1974 soundtrack version first with the bonus tracks and on ''DISC 2'', record the entire film version that has the rest of the bonus tracks.
