Laurel Canyon Reprise: Game Theory Rarities Collected on "Across The Barrier of Sound: Postscript"

January 21, 2020 By Sam Stone Leave a Comment

PRE-ORDER FROM AMAZON.COM

Omnivore Recordings' celebration of '80s indie band Game Theory continues on March 20 with Across The Barrier of Sound: Postscript. The critically acclaimed group gained legions of fans over the years with '60s and '70s pop influences and a post-punk edge. Their classic 1982-1988 albums have already been given the Omnivore treatment, and now the label is turning the spotlight toward a clutch of sessions recorded in 1989-90 by a revamped Game Theory lineup.

For that short time, bandleader Scott Miller teamed up with Michael Quercio (ex-The Three O'Clock bassist who'd go on to form Permanent Green Light), and former Alternate Learning drummer Jozef Becker, while Game Theory's longtime drummer Gil Ray switched over to guitar and keyboards to tour the west coast and record some tracks in the studio. Across The Barrier of Sound: Postscript brings together those studio recordings, plus demos, home recordings, and live material. Crucially, 23 of the CD set's two-dozen tracks are previously unreleased. These include tracks that would be revisited on band members' later projects, plus covers of Brian Eno's "Needle In The Camel's Eye" and The Nazz's "Forget All About It." The LP configuration features 14 highlights from the CD collection. Omnivore is offering an exclusive color vinyl variant in their online storefront, while other retailers will stock the standard black vinyl.  No matter the format, fans are in for a treat with this rare glimpse of what may have been.

Look for it on March 20 at the links below!

Sam Stone

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day. Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
