I'm Coming Out: Diana Ross' "Supertonic: Mixes" Collects Chart-Topping Remixes

For the legendary Diana Ross, it's clear that there truly ain't no mountain high enough. The superstar made chart history earlier this year when "Love Hangover 2020" reached the top position on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart - making it her fourth consecutive No. 1 remix of a song that had previously been No. 1 on the Hot 100 in its original version. Now, that record-setting remix is coming to CD, clear vinyl LP, and digital formats along with Miss Ross' other three recent chart-toppers and four additional cuts on an all-new album. Supertonic: Mixes, produced by the singer and featuring remixes by producer Eric Kupper, arrives from Motown/UMe on May 29 (digital) and July 24 (physical).

"Love Hangover 2020" gave new life to the classic disco anthem penned by Pam Sawyer and Marilyn McLeod and produced by Hal Davis for the 1976 Diana Ross LP. Ross' original version simultaneously made No. 1 on the Billboard Pop, Soul, and Dance charts in May of that year. The 2020 remix was created by Eric Kupper using elements from the original Motown multi-track masters. It was preceded by his remixes of three other No. 1s: Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson's "The Boss" during its 40th anniversary year of 2019; of the duo's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" in 2017; and of his mash-up of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards' "I'm Coming Out" and "Upside Down" in 2018. Including these four record-breaking remixes, Miss Ross has enjoyed eight Number Ones on the Dance Club Songs chart. (An edited version of the "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" remix previously appeared on the 2017 release of Diamond Diana: The Legacy Collection).

The remaining remixes on Supertonic include two more songs from 1979's Ashford and Simpson-helmed The Boss which were originally No. 1 Dance smashes ("No One Gets the Prize" and "It's My House") as well as an earlier A&S hit, 1971's "Surrender," and the 1973 chart-topping ballad "Touch Me in the Morning" from the pen of Ron Miller and Michael Masser.

In this time when clubs worldwide are shuttered, Diana Ross' Supertonic brings the club to our homes. It's due from Motown/UMe on May 29 (digital versions) and July 24 (physical). Also on May 29, the label will issue the digital-only Supertonic: Instrumental Mixes featuring instrumental versions of all of the Eric Kupper remixes on Supertonic. Lost opportunity by only releasing single length mixes when longer ones are available. I assume has been done so CD matches the LP. I'll give it a miss.

I agree, if they're going to release disco/dance music why release edited versions? I guess they were too cheap to release this as two CDs/LPs with full-length versions.

Hi guys, just an FYI here on both of your comments (Alan and Daniel)… neither of you are correct in what you say, but what I can tell you is that I'm not sure if there IS going to be a CD hard copy of this to compliment the vinyl LP release and that remains to be seen, but I wanted you to know that there were approx. 5, maybe 6 Brazilian Promo CD Singles released over these past 6 months or so - each one pertaining to just ONE song title of Diana's. The exception is the song, THE BOSS, which encompasses two promo CD singles (Part #1 & Part #2 - housing about 20 mixes, I think - 10 remixes to each). The other songs covered on the this album each come from their own promo CD single comprised of 10 mixes (on each disc - on each song)! These promos contain some very long versions for sure though. I believe their all done by Eric Kupper as well...
Edits serve their purposes and this product, the clear vinyl is part of the driving force for collectors, as well as basically a sample of each tune.
        Cheers!
