Down To Earth: Peter Gabriel's Collection of Movie Songs Gets Wide Release In June

Last year, Peter Gabriel issued Rated PG, a collection of one-off songs he'd written and performed for motion pictures across his solo career. This year, that album gets a wider release beyond its picture disc pressing for Record Store Day; it'll now be available on CD and vinyl this Friday, June 12.

A longtime film fan who once nearly enrolled at a London film school before his work in Genesis became noticed by the British music press, Gabriel has been no stranger to writing music for movies. Four soundtracks are in his official discography: 1985's Birdy, 1989's Passion (from Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation Of Christ), 2000's OVO (used to soundtrack a live show in London's Millennium Dome) and 2002's Long Walk Home (from the Australian drama Rabbit-Proof Fence.)

Now, Rated PG is a chance to bring more of his film work together. This 10-track collection features songs like the Oscar-nominated "Down To Earth," from the Disney/Pixar blockbuser WALL-E; "Walk Through The Fire," a track on the soundtrack to Against All Odds (which featured Gabriel's former Genesis bandmate Phil Collins' smash "Against All Odds (Take a Look At Me Now)"); "Taboo," a collaboration with Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan heard on the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers; and, of course, "In Your Eyes," the not-quite-hit from 1986's So that nonetheless earned its place in pop culture history when it scored a pivotal moment in Cameron Crowe's Say Anything... in 1989. At least three tracks make their official debuts on this album, while the 1995 track "This Is Party Man" is an entirely new version.

The CD edition is housed in a digipak, while the black vinyl LP, remastered at half speed by Matt Colton at Metropolis, is packaged with a hi-res download. You can order Rated PG at the links below.
