One of New Order’s most celebrated albums is getting expanded in October.

Rhino will issue a “Definitive Edition” of the band’s sophomore release, 1983’s Power, Corruption & Lies. The box will feature the album on CD and LP with the first-ever mastering from the original analog tapes; a bonus disc of unreleased session outtakes and the band’s 1982 live set for John Peel’s BBC radio program; and two DVDs offering three complete live shows, a host of additional concert clips and television appearances, and the band’s tongue-in-cheek Channel 4 documentary Play At Home.

Following the formation of New Order from the ashes of post-punk outfit Joy Division (following frontman Ian Curtis’ passing in 1980) and the release of debut album Movement in 1981 (itself expanded for a definitive box set last year), Power, Corruption & Lies marked a distinctive new direction for the band. Inspired by visits to American clubs and the founding of their label Factory Records’ own nightspot, The Hacienda, the band (singer/guitarist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and drummer Stephen Morris) fully adopted electronic and dance styles on “Blue Monday,” their first release of 1983.

With a pulsating four-on-the-floor beat and Sumner’s distinctive low vocals, the track remains one of their best-known, reaching No. 9 on the U.K. singles chart and No. 5 on Billboard‘s dance surveys. (By several accounts, it is one of the best-selling 12″ singles of all time.) Two more non-album singles from the period, “Confusion” and “Thieves Like Us,” reached the U.K. Top 20; a Benelux-only single, “Murder,” scraped the bottom of the country’s chart. As for Power, Corruption & Lies, it’s been hailed over time as one of the most notable dance-rock albums of its era, with retrospective placements on best-of-the-’80s album lists by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and Slant. It became the group’s first of eight career Top 10 albums in England, and the album’s Peter Saville-designed sleeve (utilizing a painting of roses by Henri Fantin-Latour) has appeared everywhere from Royal Mail stamps to fashion brand Supreme’s 2013 collections.

The definitive Power, Corruption & Lies is due October 2; the same day, the band’s four 1983-1984 12″ singles will also be repressed. (As with the Movement deluxe campaign, those tracks – included on a 2008 reissue of the album – will not be available in the box set.) Pre-orders for all five products are below.
