On Friday, RCA and Legacy Recordings announced the release of From Elvis in Nashville, a 4-CD box set due on November 20 which promises to be the definitive chronicle of Presley's marathon Music City recording session fifty years ago.
In June 1970, Elvis arrived at RCA's Studio B in Nashville to begin what would become a legendary five-night recording session. Along with an additional session on September 22, these tracks would form the core of three celebrated albums: That's the Way It Is, Elvis Country (I'm 10,000 Years Old), and Love Letters from Elvis. (All three original albums have previously been addressed by Legacy in expanded editions; Love Letters was paired with Elvis Country. That's the Way It Is is also receiving a deluxe edition this year presenting, for the first time, the complete rehearsal sessions on eight CDs. Get all of the details on that release here.)
Following the success of his American Sound sessions the year before, Elvis was eager to hit the studio again. Never a fan of overdubbing, he chose instead to perform live in the studio with the top session players in the city, colloquially known as the Nashville Cats. You couldn't pick much better collaborators than multi-instrumentalist Charlie McCoy, bassist Norbert Putnam, and pianist David Briggs. On guitar for the June session was longtime Elvis collaborator James Burton, while Muscle Shoals house band guitarist Eddie Hinton played on the September session. Over the course of the sessions, they recorded over 40 songs hand-picked by Elvis. Together, these songs form something of a bridge between his roots in bluegrass and country, the rockabilly style with which he revolutionized all of music in the '50s, and the contemporary pop sounds he was embracing in his live shows.
Whether it be the June takes of Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away," the stirring interpretation of Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," rollicking jams on blues favorites like "Got My Mojo Workin'," or the September session highlight "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On," these tracks not only cook with gas, they also informed the trajectory of Elvis's career to come, which would continue to see many successes.
Now, these influential sessions will be collected for the first time on a single collection, but with a twist. All have been newly mixed by famed engineer Matt Ross-Spang. These 2020 mixes strip away the orchestrations and overdubs of the released recordings to offer a more immediate and intimate listening experience true to when Elvis and the band laid down the core tracks.
From Elvis In Nashville will be available as a 4-CD box set including two discs of rare or entirely unreleased recordings from the sessions. Meanwhile, vinyl aficionados will be happy to hear that a 2-LP highlights collection will also be released. The Graceland Official Store will have an exclusive orange and aquamarine color variant of the 2-LP set for sale for collectors.
All configurations are set to hit storefronts and online retailers on November 20. You can pre-order your copy and peruse the track listing below! And check out this advance preview of "I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water." Use this link if the embedded YouTube video doesn't display on your browser.
