It might be hard to believe, but the hard rockers of Mastodon are celebrating their 20th year together.  And they’re doing so in style with a new collection of audio treasures available now on CD wherever fine music is sold and across digital platforms.  Entitled Medium Rarities, the 16-track album is comprised of non-album singles, covers, soundtrack recordings, instrumentals, and live performances collected together for the first time ever.  You’ll hear the band take on  “A Commotion” by Feist, “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton” by The Flaming Lips, and “Orion” by Metallica – all reinterpreted in their own unique way.

Soundtrack recordings include “White Walker” from Game of Thrones and “Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife” from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.  Instrumental cuts “Asleep in the Deep,” “Toe To Toes,” “Jaguar God,” and “Halloween” also feature on the set.  The collection comes on the heels of another new Mastodon track, “Rufus Lives,” which features on the soundtrack to Bill & Ted Face The Music, out now on 10K Projects.

In addition to the CD and streaming iterations of Medium Rarities, the album will also be made available on limited-edition pink vinyl.  A standard black vinyl edition is also planned.  Both are set to be released on October 16 via Warner Records.

Sam Stone has been obsessed with catalog music ever since his folks gave him a Contours best-of collection for his fourth birthday. He quickly began to learn all he could about rock and roll history and beyond, a passion that continues to this day.

Sam followed his love for music to the classroom, earning a B.A. from Towson University in Electronic Media and Film, concentrating on radio and audio production, as well as an M.A. in Audio Arts from Syracuse University. He has put his knowledge and skills to work at prominent reissue labels and is excited to bring his perspectives on catalog music to a broader audience. When he’s not writing for The Second Disc, Sam can be found researching about music, talking about Joni Mitchell’s career, and adding another box set to his Amazon wish list.
