If you've been reading The Second Disc for any amount of time, you probably know we're big fans of Intervention Records. Back in 2018, we profiled the label's ongoing Matthew Sweet artist-approved reissue series and reviewed the excellent vinyl edition of 100% Fun. Now we can share the exciting news that Sweet's breakthrough 1992 album Girlfriend is set to arrive on SACD through Intervention Records. The disc hits shops on October 16.
What sets this one apart from the vinyl counterpart released back in September 2018? Well, for one, the SACD format offers crystal-clear, high-resolution digital sound. And as we've come to expect from Intervention Records, they've spared no expense to present it in the best possible quality. The SACD edition has been mastered direct to DSD from the original analog master tapes, prepared by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. The hybrid disc format means that you can still play it on standard CD players.
In addition to the full album of excellent and truly career-defining power-pop, this edition includes three bonus demo tracks: "Good Friend," "Superdeformed," and "Teenage Female." These bonus tracks were sourced from Sweet's personal archive, as laid down on a DAT tape recording. Unlike some reissue programs, this Matthew Sweet reissue series is 100% approved by the artist.
Intervention is offering two different configurations for this SACD: the standard version as described above, and a special signed edition. The signed SACD costs $7.50 more, all of which will go directly to the artist. It's a win-win, especially during this climate: fans not only get a fantastic version of one of the most important albums in rock, but they also get the opportunity to show their support for the artist.
Whether you get the standard configuration or the signed version, Intervention promises this will be a disc you'll return to over and over for its sonics: "maximum bass and dynamics...big, fat guitar tones...a massive soundstage." It all adds up to a fantastic presentation of a favorite album. You can purchase the SACD directly from Intervention Records with the links below!

I'd love to have one signed by Tuesday Weld. That would truly be Sweet. 😉

I had been interested in the Matthew Sweet subscription from Intervention in 2018 but it got cancelled after 100% Fun due to problems at Pledge Music I believe. I just pre-ordered Girlfriend and hope this means Altered Beast is coming.

Huge Matthew Sweet fan. Nice that this is finally surfacing two years after it was due. I'm sure sorting out fallout from Pledge Music was a big part of it. Can't say I'm not disappointed that Altered Beast wasn't first to make it out on SACD since there was already the Legacy Collection of Girlfriend with all the bonus tracks and more. I'm holding out hope that Altered Beast will make it's way to SACD soon. The bonus tracks they have for it are of more interest. I'm also hoping they get to explore Blue Sky on Mars and In Reverse as well.
