Digital Round-Up: Nelly Furtado, OutKast Celebrate 20 Years with Expanded Albums

Whoa Nelly expanded

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

A pair of popular albums from 2000 are now available as digital-only expanded editions for their 20th anniversaries.

Whoa, Nelly! was the debut album from genre-bending singer Nelly Furtado. Born in Canada to Portuguese parents, Furtado's blend of folk and hip-hop stood out amid the era of teen-friendly pop on TRL. Lead single "I'm Like a Bird" topped the charts in her native country and reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100; follow-up "Turn Off the Light" hit the Top 10 in both countries as well. Nelly won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance "I'm Like a Bird," and also earned Song of the Year and Best New Artist nominations. This expansion of Whoa, Nelly! features 10 bonus tracks from vinyl and ex-U.S. CD singles, including a notable remix of "Turn Off the Light" by Timbaland. (The rapper/producer teamed up with Furtado on her third album Loose, her most commercially successful album.)

Stankonia 20

From the north, we move to the Dirty South for a celebration of Atlanta rap duo OutKast's commercial breakthrough Stankonia. Though Big Boi and Andre 3000 were no strangers to the scene - watch them defiantly proclaim "the South got something to say" when winning Best New Rap Group at the contentious 1995 Source Awards defined by East Coast/West Coast hip-hop tensions - Stankonia marked a quantum leap forward for the pair. Their increasingly divergent inspirations - Dre started singing and incorporated spacey rock and vintage soul into tracks, while Big Boi's verses became even quicker - appealed to a wider swath of fans and critics than ever before. "Ms. Jackson" became a surprise No. 1 pop hit and the duo took home two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Stankonia is being celebrated in a few digital ways: the album has been reissued with six bonus tracks, including a cappella versions of tracks and a previously unreleased remix of the stellar "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)" by Rage Against the Machine's Zack de la Rocha. The album's three singles - "B.O.B.," "Ms. Jackson" and "So Fresh, So Clean" - have also been delivered as digital EPs packed with rare remixes and instrumentals, including all the bonuses from the new album expansion, at least three unreleased "B.O.B." mixes and an unearthed take on "So Fresh" mixed by Korn frontman Jonathan Davis.
