Big Bang Baby: Rhino Reissues, Expands Stone Temple Pilots' "Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop"

Stone Temple Pilots' Tiny Music is about to get a lot bigger.  On July 23, Rhino will reissue Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop: Super Deluxe Edition as a 3-CD/1-LP set, expanding the band's third album to mark its 25th anniversary.  This box follows the label's previous expansions of Core and Purple.

Tiny Music was recorded during a particularly fraught time in Stone Temple Pilots' career.  In early 1995, lead singer Scott Weiland was arrested for drug possession.  Sentenced to probation and on the outs with his STP bandmates, he formed The Magnificent Bastards as a side project.  Dean DeLeo (guitar), Robert DeLeo (bass), and Eric Kretz (drums) formed their own group, too.  Talk Show would feature Dave Coutts of California band Ten Inch Men as lead singer.  Before Talk Show released its own album, the DeLeos and Kretz reconciled with Weiland, resulting in songs being written and selected concurrently for both groups.  Perhaps owing to the unusual circumstances, Tiny Music took the STP sound in a new direction as it built on a '60s rock and jangle pop framework.  Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen) continued his association with the band as producer.

Released on March 26, 1996, Tiny Music opened at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, eventually reaching double platinum status.  The album yielded three hit singles: "Big Bang Baby," "Lady Picture Show," and "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart" all went to No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock chart.  The remastered original album is featured on both CD and vinyl in the new box set.  CD 2 comprises Early Versions, Instrumentals and Alternate Mixes, for a total of 15 songs - all of which are previously unreleased.  The third CD premieres Live at Club La Vela, Panama City Beach, FL (3/14/97) with 14 previously unreleased live performances.

In addition to the box set, the remastered album will be made available on CD; and a 2-CD Deluxe Edition will have the album plus the disc of studio outtakes.  Finally, a limited-edition bundle is available to pre-order exclusively from the STP online store.  It includes the Super Deluxe Edition plus a bonus 7-inch single of "Big Bang Baby" b/w "Daisy" in a sleeve replicating the CD promo single artwork from 1997.  This bundle is limited to 1,000 copies.

Scott Weiland was dismissed from Stone Temple Pilots in 2013 and died in December 2015, aged just 48, of an accidental overdose.  The DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz continue to perform as STP today with Jeff Gutt as the current lead singer.

Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop: Super Deluxe Edition arrives from Rhino, along with the 1-CD and 2-CD editions, on July 23.  You'll find pre-order links and the track listing below.
