Motörhead's first, chart-topping live album is getting a 40th anniversary makeover. 1981's No Sleep 'til Hammersmith arrived on the heels of the British band's international breakthrough, Ace of Spades. The metal trio - Lemmy Kilmister, "Fast" Eddie Clarke, and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor - created a big noise on the live LP primarily recorded at the Queen's Hall in Leeds and City Hall in Newcastle. On June 25, it's returning from BMG in 4CD, 2CD, and 3LP configurations.
The 4CD set is the most extensive, loaded with music (including many previously unreleased tracks) and the expected swag:
- The original No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith album, remastered from the original master tapes. Featuring two previously released bonus tracks plus three previously unreleased soundcheck recordings;
- The three full recordings of the concerts (March 28, 1981 in Leeds and March 29-30 in Newcastle) that comprised No Sleep, all appearing in full for the first time;
- Liner notes chronicling the story of the album through previously unpublished and new interviews with key personnel plus photos and memorabilia images;
- Double sided, A3 concert posters from 1981;
- A replica USA 1981 tour pass;
- A Motörhead 'England' plectrum;
- A replica 1981 European tour badge;
- A replica Newcastle City Hall ticket; and
- Port Vale gig postcard.
The 3-LP and 2-CD versions have the original, 11-track album plus the complete March 30 Newcastle show. All three versions are housed in book-style packages.
No Sleep 'Til Hammersmith offers an overview of the electrifying group's first years. The setlist as preserved on the original LP featured two songs from the band's debut album, the title track from 1979's Bomber, five cuts off 1979's Overkill, and three from Ace of Spades. The live album also yielded a hit single when the live version of "Motörhead" went all the way to No. 6 on the U.K. Singles Chart. Despite the album's title, London's famed Hammersmith Odeon was not one of the tour venues. The lion's share of tracks was derived from the 1981 Newcastle and Leeds performances, but "Iron Horse/Born to Lose" was pulled from a 1980 concert. In addition to its No. 1 berth on the U.K. Albums Chart, No Sleep reached No. 12 in Germany and the top 30 in New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden, and Norway.
Mark your calendars for June 25 to celebrate this incendiary live document of one of hard rock and metal's most renowned bands. You'll find pre-order links and the track listing with discographical annotation below.
