The long-running Neil Young Archives Series has featured a number of lines: an Official Release Series, a Performance Series, and a Special Release Series among them. Shakey Pictures Records and Reprise Records recently announced a new addition to the Archives: the Neil Young Official Bootleg Series. It will launch on Friday, October 1 with Carnegie Hall 1970, featuring Young's debut performance at the venerable venue on December 4, 1970 (the early show). Carnegie Hall 1970 will arrive on double vinyl, double CD, and digital formats (including high resolution), with the promise of five more Bootleg titles coming in 2022.
The performance was captured on analog multitrack tape and mixed for this release by Young and Niko Bolas. It was the first of two shows that evening; the second began at midnight on the morning of December 5. The midnight show has been bootlegged numerous times over the years, but the "lost" early show is considered by Young to be the stronger of the two. Carnegie Hall 1970 is the latest 1970 concert to be released under the Archives banner following Live at the Fillmore East (March, with Crazy Horse) and Live at the Cellar Door (November 30-December 2, just prior to the New York stand).
At the world-famous Hall, Young drew on his early repertoire with raw, unvarnished renditions of songs from the Buffalo Springfield days ("I Am a Child," "Expecting to Fly," "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong," "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," "On the Way Home"), his eponymous debut ("The Loner"), Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere ("Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl," "Cowgirl in the Sand"), and the then-recently-released After the Gold Rush (the title track, "Tell Me Why," "Only Love Can Break Your Heart," "Southern Man," "Don't Let It Bring You Down," "Birds"). He also played some fresh CSNY material ("Helpless," "Ohio") and previewed as-yet-unreleased songs including "Old Man," "See the Sky About to Rain," and more.

" Official Bootleg" or, just another money grab.
The well ran dry some time ago.
...Old man take a look at my life I'm a lot like you...

You really don't have to buy it if you don't want to!
But many will - happily....:)
Paul Price says
Same songs over and over and over. Been there done that.

Apparently, there's a product shortage, if the "Phusical Product" versions have been released at all. The day after the release date, amazon.com says "Ships in 1 to 2 months" and Bull Moose says "Available to Special Order". While I maintain an order with Bull Moose, I went to a free download site and found the musifc there. This way, I can listen to the music on my computer. If I am ultimately unable to obtain the 2-CD set, I can always burn my download to CD-R. Warner/Reprise, this is a great way to begin Neil Young's bootleg series: with unavailable product.
Joe Marchese says
Both physical formats do exist; my local Barnes and Noble had both in stock. That said, there definitely have been some shortage issues, particularly with the CD.
