Rainbow Theatre - December 10, 1971: Official Zappa Store / Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
Zappa Records and UMe have three releases commemorating Frank Zappa and The Mothers' legendary 1971 shows including a June run at New York's late, lamented Fillmore East (featuring a guest spot from John Lennon and Yoko Ono) and the December 10, 1971 Rainbow Theatre show that ended in tragedy when Zappa was violently pushed from the stage into the orchestra pit 12 feet below. (The week prior had been marred by horror, too, as a December 4 fire at the Montreux Casino during their show ended with the venue in flames.) The 8-CD box set The Mothers 1971 captures the happier times at the Fillmore, marking the very first time the complete Fillmore East concerts have been released in unedited form. The box also contains the complete Rainbow Theatre show as well as a composite concert from the June 1 and 3 performances in Scranton and Harrisburg, PA, respectively. The CD box is joined by an expanded edition of the original Fillmore East - June 1971 album on 3 LPs (including period mixes not replicated within the newly-remixed 8-CD box) and standalone vinyl version of the Rainbow Theatre show, complete with its frightening conclusion. Tony Hazzard, Demonstration (Liberation Hall) (Bandcamp / Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
Songwriter Tony Hazzard penned memorable hits for such artists as The Hollies, Manfred Mann, Herman's Hermits, Cliff Richard, Gene Pitney, and Andy Williams, but he also recorded a number of solo releases beginning with his 1969 debut Tony Hazzard Sings Tony Hazzard. The new Demonstration is a retooled version of that debut with all but one song from the original LP ("The Sound of the Candyman's Trumpet") plus two additional tracks ("How She's Making Out," "The Matter with You"). Recorded between 1966-1969 at Regent Sound in London as demo material (hence the title), Demonstration shows off Hazzard's deceptively simple songcraft and abundant gift for melody with his own renditions of some of those classic tunes including "Me, the Peaceful Heart" (Lulu), "Listen to Me" (The Hollies), "Ha! Ha! Said the Clown" and "Fox on the Run" (Manfred Mann), and "Hello, World" (The Tremeloes). Put simply, they don't write 'em like this anymore! Hazzard notes of the new release, "This current version has been remixed and remastered from the original 4-track tapes that I was lucky enough to buy before they were due to be destroyed. All the tracks are demos. We re-recorded 'Fox on the Run' and 'You Won't Be Leaving' again for the album. In addition, Tony Hicks of The Hollies recorded his lead guitar part on 'Listen to Me' and it was edited into the demo. Otherwise, all the tracks are the original demos." A vinyl release of Demonstration will be released in May by Liberation Hall.
Mountain, Eruption (Liberation Hall) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The story of Mountain is one of both triumph and tragedy; the hard rock band anchored by guitarist Leslie West, vocalist/bassist Felix Pappalardi, and drummer Corky Laing suffered an immeasurable loss when Pappalardi was tragically shot and killed by his wife in 1983. Two years later, former Uriah Heep bassist Mark Clarke joined the group. The first disc of this 2-CD set was recorded with Clarke in 1985 at two storied New York music venues (The Ritz in Manhattan and L'Amour in Brooklyn), while the second was preserved with bassist Richie Scarlet while on tour in Europe in 2003. Eruption was originally released in 2004 by Fuel 2000 (USA) and Snapper Music (U.K.). An abridged vinyl release from Liberation Hall will follow later in 2022. Son House, Forever on My Mind (Easy Eye Sound) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)
The Father of the Delta Blues (1902-1988) is back on this new release from Easy Eye Sound which premieres eight tracks from manager Dick Waterman's personal archive of quarter-inch tapes recorded by House in the 1960s as the bluesman was rediscovered by a new generation of fans on the folk circuit. Forever On My Mind represents the earliest full-length House solo performance recorded after his rediscovery, at an appearance on November 23, 1964 at Wabash College, a small men's school in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Producer Dan Auerbach has overseen the restoration and mastering of these powerful performances. Available on CD, standard black vinyl, Easy Eye Sound-exclusive orange marble vinyl, and digital/streaming.

Hot on the heels of last year's acclaimed release Dolenz Sings Nesmith, Micky Dolenz pays further tribute to his late bandmate Michael Nesmith with this new, four-song EP available on both CD and vinyl. Dolenz Sings Nesmith: The EP was recorded at the same sessions that yielded the original album and includes vibrant reimaginings of Nez favorite "Some of Shelly's Blues" and First National Band tunes "The Crippled Lion" and "Grand Ennui" plus the world premiere recording of a previously unheard Nez composition from 1967, "Soul-Writer's Birthday." Mike's son Christian Nesmith has arranged and produced the EP (in addition to singing and playing multiple instruments on it) which is sure to be a worthy companion to the original Dolenz Sings Nesmith LP. The CD version is limited to 1,000 units and the 10-inch vinyl version, pressed on blue vinyl, is also limited. 7a's Glenn Gretlund provides a brief sleeve note and tribute to Nesmith.
