The Rolling Stones may be off the road for now, but until they return to European stages this summer, the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band is serving up more live fare for audiences everywhere. The Stones will follow up the May 13 release of 1977's Live at the El Mocambo with a live set of more recent vintage. On June 10, Mercury Studios delivers Licked Live in NYC, presenting the band's January 2003 Madison Square Garden show from the 40th anniversary Licked tour, in multiple formats:
- 2CD/DVD;
- 2CD/SD-BD (Standard Definition Blu-ray);
- 2CD; and
- 3LP (180-gram white vinyl).
First released in 2003 as an HBO special and as part of the Best Buy-exclusive Four Flicks DVD package, audio and video for the MSG concert has been newly restored and remastered, picking up four previously unreleased songs (each one a Stone-cold classic): "Start Me Up", "Tumbling Dice", "Gimme Shelter," and "Sympathy for the Devil." The concert's song sequence is identical in all formats. This release marks the audio debut of this show.
Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts were joined by Darryl Jones (bass, backing vocals), Chuck Leavell (keyboards, backing vocals), Bobby Keys (saxophone), Bernard Fowler (backing vocals), Lisa Fischer (backing vocals), Blondie Chaplin (backing vocals, acoustic guitar/ percussion), Tim Ries (saxophone, keyboards), Kent Smith (trumpet), and Michael Davis (trombone). The show's all-encompassing setlist boasted such band favorites as "Satisfaction," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll," "Street Fighting Man," "Angie," "Brown Sugar," and a guest appearance by Sheryl Crow on "Honky Tonk Women."
The new release's DVD and Blu-ray formats add three bonus performances from Amsterdam ("Star Star," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," and "Street Fighting Man") plus rehearsal footage. The Blu-ray also includes the additional 51-minute documentary Tip of the Tongue which explores the three show/three venue approach of the Stones on this tour. The band would nightly switch between stadiums, arenas, and theatres, tailoring the setlists to the size and intimacy of the venue. Licked Live in NYC, of course, presents the arena form of the show. The documentary offers footage from the recording studio in Paris to the rehearsals in Toronto.

Thank anybody who remembered us for the CD format. "US' refers to people who want a case and a description of the songs presented herein

The 3-level concept of this tour was not arena/ballroom/theatre, but stadium/arena/theater. So, the MSG show doesn’t represent “the biggest form” of the show, but rather the medium form.

This was previously only available as part of their DVD release called "Four Flicks." What a waste again. They should have release more footage of 1960s shows instead of these same old boring stuff. Too much for the latter days.
