Endless 'Summer': 21st Century Beach Boys Compilation Expanded for Group's 60th Anniversary

April 28, 2022 By Joe Marchese 16 Comments

Beach Boys Sounds of Summer 2022

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

On October 1, 1962, The Beach Boys released their album debut Surfin' Safari on Capitol Records, beginning an extraordinary musical odyssey that continues to this day.  Since then, brothers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson; cousin Mike Love; and friend Al Jardine - along with fellow travelers including Bruce Johnston, David Marks, Blondie Chaplin, and Ricky Fataar, and dozens of key collaborators including Gary Usher, Roger Christian, Tony Asher, Van Dyke Parks, Billy Hinsche, Jeffrey Foskett, and Terry Melcher - have become synonymous with beautiful harmonies, musical innovation, and good, good, good vibrations.  Today, Capitol Records and UMe announced a 60th anniversary celebration of America's Band.

The festivities will begin with an expanded edition of the album that brought The Beach Boys back onto the charts in the 21st century in a big way.  Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys was originally issued in 2003, peaking within the top 20 of the Billboard 200 and remaining on the charts for 104 weeks.  The 4x platinum overview of The Beach Boys' discography will be reissued in a variety of formats on June 17 in an edition that both adds tracks and gives a sonic overhaul to many of the original songs on the compilation.  The 30-track CD will grow to 80 tracks encompassing the band's classic hits as well as deeper cuts and longtime fan favorites spanning Surfin' Safari through 1989's Still Cruisin' which included the Number One smash "Kokomo."  (None of the band's three subsequent albums are represented, with the most conspicuous absence being that of the acclaimed 50th anniversary album, 2012's That's Why God Made the Radio, which yielded a top 30 AC hit with the lush title track.)

At the helm of the new Sounds of Summer is the team of Mark Linett and Alan Boyd (The SMiLE Sessions, Feel Flows - The Sunflower and Surf's Up Sessions 1969-1971).  The expanded set features every one of the Boys' U.S. top 40 hits including the chart-topping "I Get Around," "Help Me, Rhonda," "Good Vibrations," and "Kokomo" as well as "California Girls," "Fun, Fun, Fun," "Barbara Ann," "Disney Girls," "Sail On, Sailor," "Surf's Up," "Til I Die," "Add Some Music to Your Day," and more.  The new release premieres 24 new mixes including two first-time stereo mixes, plus 22 new-and-improved stereo mixes including some which have employed current digital extraction technology to present mono tracks into stereo for the first time.

The new Sounds of Summer will be released in numerous formats including:

  • 3CD softpack;
  • 1CD remastered edition of the original compilation;
  • 6LP Super Deluxe Edition pressed on 180-gram black vinyl (standard);
  • 6LP Super Deluxe Edition pressed on 180-gram black vinyl (numbered, limited edition with a rainbow foil slipcases and four lithographs, exclusive to online store);
  • 2LP remastered edition of the original compilation (standard weight vinyl)
  • 2 LP remastered edition of the original compilation (180-gram vinyl with tip-on jacket and a lithograph, exclusive to online store); and
  • Digital (including a Dolby Atmos presentation of the original 30-track album).

Following the release of Sounds of Summer, this fall will bring the next archival release in the band's ongoing series.  This multi-disc collection will highlight the creatively fertile period that yielded both Carl and The Passions - So Tough (1972) and Holland (1973).  Watch this space for more details on that project as well as about further 60th anniversary plans including a feature-length documentary, a tribute special, and more.  Mike Love, Bruce Johnston, and The Beach Boys will be out on the road this summer, as always, as will be Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and Blondie Chaplin on a double bill with their old friends, Chicago.

Catch a wave: the expanded Sounds of Summer is due from Capitol/UMe on June 17.  You'll find pre-order links and the track listings below!  The new stereo mix of "Good Vibrations" is currently streaming on all of the usual digital services including YouTube.

    Interesting that they chose Baby Blue from The Light Album which was the b-side to the single Here Comes The Night. While Baby Blue is a nice song, I would rather have had the single edit of Here Comes The Night.

      True! I'm a big fan of the Light Album and "Baby Blue" is an incredible song but not including the disco "Here Comes The Night" on any compilations is revisionist history. After all, trying for a disco hit in 1979 was a good idea and might have worked!
      Anyway, nice looking collection.

    It's called "Sounds of Summer", The Very Best of the Beach Boys. However it's missing 10 major tracks: 409, Catch A Wave, Little Honda, Little Girl I Once Knew, Caroline No, Bluebirds Over The Mountain, Break Away, Trader, Keepin' The Summer Alive and That's Why God Made The Radio. If these had been included in this 80 track collection instead of 10 of the lesser known "filler tracks" this would have been a great collection to honor their 60th anniversary.

      I agree almost totally. And I'm still hoping one day for a stereo mix of Sound of Free.

    I'll get this...still fairly interesting even though it doesn't go up to date...keeping that "Made In California" box, which is the gold standard...just went on that Beach Boys Good Vibrations Cruise, so this is a nice capper...wish it had both "Rock & Roll To The Rescue" & "California Dreaming" in new remasters, so I can dump that should-be-obsolete "Made In USA" compilation...and what I am really looking forward to is the next archive box covering 1972-1973, with "Carl & the Passions: So Tough" & "Holland" in the fall!!!

    When I first got the UM email yesterday, I was praying that they would be *FINALLY* be giving us a STEREO mix of "The Little Girl I Once Knew" since, after all, the email said there'd be new-to-STEREO songs included. What a bummer and a lost opportunity!! UME and Beach Boys, what's the story with that song?!

      As the "Sea of Tunes" label bootlegs established, while the instrumental tracks for "The Little Girl I Once Knew were recorded on 3 or 4 tracks, the vocals were gradually built up by a series of mono to mono copying operations. There were never any multitracks for the vocals.

    I know its splitting hairs but...... What exactly is this 60th anniversary celebrating? Certainly not the start of the band or the release of their first single. Maybe its the first falling out between Brian and Mike

    Hmmmmm.... No. Not good enough. Got two major boxes and assorted 2-cd compilations. And I doubt my 60-year-old years will discern the "new and Improved" stereo hype.

    I'll just wait for a Stereo Mix comparison post or video and see which Beach Boys song from this compilation re-release sounds better in its new 2021 stereo mix or previous stereo mix or should've been kept in Mono.

      I know, right? Some songs have been remixed in stereo so often I can't recall which are the ones I like better. Some (the ones I prefer) highlight the vocals in stereo while some try and split the difference and try and have the music and vocals both in stereo.
