Whether performing with Elf, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Heaven and Hell, or his own band, Dio, Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010) thrilled with his powerful voice and indomitable spirit. One of the most influential hard rock and metal singers of all time, Dio would have turned 80 years old on July 10. Rhino is remembering him with a 4-CD super deluxe edition of the band Dio's debut, 1983's Holy Diver. The box arrives in stores on July 8, just two days before Dio's 80th.
Holy Diver united Ronnie, on vocals, keyboard, and production, with drummer Vinnie Appice, bassist-keyboardist Jimmy Bain, and guitarist Vivian Campbell. Vinnie had come into the group via Black Sabbath, and Bain was an alumnus of Rainbow; Campbell was late of Sweet Savage. Adorned with a striking cover painting by Randy Barrett, Holy Diver was a dark, gothic work of widescreen fantasy with big hooks, incendiary guitars, and thunderous vocals. A top 15 album upon its release in the U.K. that made a not-too-shabby No. 56 in the U.S., it's since been certified double platinum stateside and has remained a steady seller.
The upcoming Super Deluxe Edition is built around two versions of Holy Diver. CD 1 presents a brand-new 2022 mix of the album made utilizing the original multitracks by Joe Barresi, known for his work with such bands as Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, and Slipknot. CD 2 features a remastered version of the original 1983 mix.
Two discs of bonus material round out the package. CD 3, Live at Selland Arena, Fresno, CA, 1983, offers previously unreleased live versions of much of Holy Diver including the title track, "Stand Up and Shout," "Straight Through the Heart," "Shame on the Night," "Rainbow in the Dark," and "Don't Talk to Strangers." Dio and co. also revisited Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell" and "Children of the Sea" and Rainbow's "Starstruck" and "Man on the Silver Mountain. CD 4 offers 10 additional tracks including Joe Barresi's remixes of session alternates as well as the 1983 B-side "Evil Eyes" (which would be revisited for the band Dio's second album, The Last in Line) and the original mono and stereo single edits of "Rainbow in the Dark."
Also on July 8, Rhino will release the new mix of Holy Diver as a 180-gram 2-LP vinyl set; this version features one bonus track, the 1983 recording of "Evil Eyes." Side Four has an etching of the demon known to Dio fans as Murray.
Joe Barresi's new remix of "Holy Diver" is available today on all digital/streaming services including YouTube as a taste of the full album remix. You'll find pre-order links (U.K. and Canada will be active shortly) and the track listing for Holy Diver: Super Deluxe Edition below!
