Over the past few years, Whitesnake has taken to remixing its classic tracks on such releases as the 35th anniversary edition of Slide It In (2019), Love Songs (2020), and the 25th anniversary edition of Restless Heart (2021), among other titles. Now, the band has retooled its familiar 1994 Greatest Hits collection in "Revisited, Remixed, and Remastered" form. Its release will be staggered, with the currently-available digital version to be followed this Friday, June 17, with CD and black vinyl 180-gram double-LP editions and on July 15 with a CD/Blu-ray combo.
The original 14-song collection has been expanded to 16 tracks, though some selections have been dropped and other cuts added. All 16 songs on the 2022 Greatest Hits have been newly mixed, with many now featuring additional instrumentation. Band founder/lead singer David Coverdale explains in the press release, "We've definitely expanded on the original Greatest Hits, took them all out of the sonic time capsule of the '80s and '90s, and brought them up to date, sound-wise...as always, we have the original albums for those who consider them holy relics."
The collection focuses on the band's purple patch in the 1980s which yielded their three most successful long-players: 1984's Slide It In (double platinum), 1987's self-tilted Whitesnake (8x platinum), and 1989's Slip of the Tongue (platinum). The most recent track, the title song of 2011's Forevermore, brings the Whitesnake story into the 21st century.
To refresh the tracks, Coverdale brought key collaborators into the recording studio. Greatest Hits features new keyboard and guitar parts on select tracks by Derek Sherinian ("Here I Go Again," "You're Gonna Break My Heart Again," "Fool for Your Loving") and Adrian Vandenburg ("The Deeper the Love," "Judgment Day") while original, unreleased guitar parts by John Sykes ("Slide It In," "Give Me All Your Love") also premiere on the set.
David Coverdale is back on the road with Whitesnake: The Farewell Tour which kicked off May 10 in Dublin, Ireland with the band Europe also on the bill. Concerts are scheduled throughout Europe and North America with the final show currently scheduled for October 21, 2022 in Las Vegas. The remixed Greatest Hits arrives in stores on CD and vinyl this Friday, June 17; the CD/Blu-ray set follows on July 15. (Details on the Blu-ray contents are TBA.)
