'Jurassic' World: La-La Land Revives a Trio of '90s Scores (and More) on CD

Jurassic Park LLL 2022

BUY NOW FROM LA-LA LAND RECORDS

La-La Land Records has three killer early '90s score expansions on their release schedule this month - and there's another much-desired title from the '80s also available to order from the label!

First up, La-La Land readies a new remastered and expanded edition of John Williams' classic score to Jurassic Park. Steven Spielberg's thrilling adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel - an action-packed sci-fi flick about a theme park full of cloned dinosaurs that invariably goes wrong - is a modern classic. In addition to a dazzling, Oscar-winning blend of animatronic life-size dinosaurs and groundbreaking computer generated models, the film might be best known for one of John Williams' most memorable scores, encapsulating the wonder and terror of coming up close and personal with the extinct animals. Williams' themes remained a bedrock of the franchise through five sequels, most recently this summer's Jurassic World Dominion (which united the Jurassic World cast with Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, all returning from the original film).

In 2016, La-La Land paired expansions of Jurassic Park and Williams' score to the 1997 Spielberg-helmed sequel The Lost World in a deluxe 4CD set, produced and mastered by Williams' longtime restoration producer Mike Matessino. This new double-disc presentation - a year ahead of the film's 30th anniversary - takes a fresh remaster of that score (sourced from the 192 kHz/24-bit files of the original recording, and correcting two cues to use proper takes/mixes for the first time) and also rebuilds the original soundtrack album issued in 1993 from those files. (An adaptation of Matessino's 2016 notes appear in the newly-redesigned package by Jim Titus.) If you're a completist - or you missed the original out-of-print reissue - you'll want to catch this one before it goes extinct. It's limited to 5000 copies.

Clear and Present Danger LLL

La-La Land next reissues two scores by the late James Horner, composed for a pair of films starring Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan, a heroic CIA operative turned U.S. president featured in a series of novels by Tom Clancy. (Ryan was played by Alec Baldwin in 1990's The Hunt for Red October, and would later be played in film and TV by Ben Affleck, Chris Pine and John Krasinski.) Horner's classically-inspired scores were a crucial portion of the vision of these two films, directed by Phillip Noyce and both critical and commercial success (despite Patriot Games being panned by Clancy due to changes in adapting his original novel for the screen.)

The Patriot Games set brings back into print a 2CD expansion issued by La-La Land in 2013, while Clear and Present Danger includes some slight expansions to a 2CD release from Intrada that same year. Each is limited to 2000 copies; Dan Goldwasser produces and designs art for both sets, mastering is done by Matessino (on Patriot Games) and Dan Hersch (on Clear and Present Danger) and liner notes handled by Jim Lochner and Jeff Bond, respectively.

Finally, LLL put enough money, power and respect together to present a definitive edition of the soundtrack to the crime classic Scarface. Oliver Stone's edgy screenplay, brought to life by director Brian De Palma, rewrote the Al Capone legend against the backdrop of early '80s Miami, when the real-life Mariel boatlift of 1980 saw refugees arriving onto American shores from Cuba. The ambitious Tony Montana (played with scenery-chewing brio by Al Pacino) rises through the seedy, neon-lit underworld on a mountain of cocaine - but could the world actually be his? Ask a generation of crime movie fans and rappers who've been openly inspired by the picture for nearly 40 years.

Scarface LLL

A killer addition to Universal Pictures' Film Music Classics Collection, this double-disc set debuts the original electronic score by the legendary Giorgio Moroder on one disc. On the other, the long-out-of-print original mix of the soundtrack album (featuring Paul Engemann's cult classic "Push It to the Limit" and Deborah Harry's "Rush Rush") is repressed alongside 12" mixes, source material and other unreleased pop tunes. Goldwasser produces (alongside Neil S. Bulk) and designs this package, remastered by Chris Malone and featuring new notes by Tim Grieving. It's limited to 5000 copies, and a digital edition will be released by Back Lot Music this fall. (Plenty of little friends to say hello to!)

All of the above titles are shipping now and ready to order at the links below.

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Good to see some Elizabeth Daily recordings getting reissued, personally I'd love La La Land to reissue a remastered deluxe edition of the Summer School soundtrack. Elizabeth Daily's "Mind Over Matter" is a killer track on that soundtrack and would also be nice to see extended versions of Mind Over Matter reissued as bonus tracks. Also, an official reissue of Debbie Harry's unreleased version of Mind Over Matter needs to see the light of day too!

Thanks for the heads up on the "Scarface" release - ordered that one immediately. This is my first go with La-La Land Records and looking forward to hearing what they've done this excellent soundtrack. The audio on the 4k Blu-ray sounds fantastic but some of the background audio is pushed so far back in the mix it's difficult to truly appreciate it - this CD should help with that.
