Brett Morgen's Moonage Daydream is certainly shaping up to be one of the most anticipated rock documentaries of the year. The writer/editor/producer/director behind acclaimed documentaries on film impresario Robert Evans and Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain brings his narrative focus to David Bowie, using unseen footage and the voice of the late rock icon himself to paint an officially-sanctioned portrait of his eclectic career. Having already screened at Cannes to critical acclaim, Moonage Daydream will face audiences with an IMAX release on September 16 - and, it was recently announced, will have a unique soundtrack to match.
Available digitally the same weekend as the movie with a November 18 release on two CDs (and a 2023 bow on triple vinyl), the Moonage Daydream companion album boasts 43 tracks: new mixes of familiar material and deep cuts alike, fragments of Bowie's narration and even a handful of unreleased works. Among the centerpieces being heard for the first time is a live medley of "The Jean Genie" and The Beatles' "Love Me Do," performed with Jeff Beck on guitar during the incendiary set that saw Bowie announce the retirement of his Ziggy Stardust persona.
Other new-to-CD wonders include an alternate mix of Hunky Dory standout "Quicksand," an unreleased live track from the acclaimed Soul Tour of 1974, a cappella snippets and an orchestral rendition or two. The first single, a new mix of Let's Dance opener "Modern Love," recasts the slick pop number as an even more dramatic track, building the original multi-track elements on top of each other for maximum effect.
The 2CD set can be pre-ordered below, along with a look at the full track list.
