Studio Wizardry of Todd Rundgren

In recent weeks, Ace Records has made two new additions to its ongoing Producers Series, and both titles spotlight the versatility of the respective talents, Todd Rundgren and Gus Dudgeon. The Studio Wizardry of Todd Rundgren is, in many senses, an update of Rhino's 1992 compilation An Elpee's Worth of Productions.  Like that set, it paints a portrait of the singer-songwriter largely in service of others' songs, though a handful of his own compositions appear, too.  Ace's collection spans

David Bowie Brilliant Adventure

Putting on the black tie, cranking out the white noise... David Bowie wasn't one to look back.  But when he announced Black Tie White Noise, many fans collectively breathed a sigh of relief.  Might the "old" David Bowie be returning?  The 1993 album was his first in six years, following three albums (two studio and one live) with his hard rock band, Tin Machine.  It also reunited him with Nile Rodgers, producer of his all-time best-selling album Let's Dance, and with Ziggy Stardust-era

David Bowie Brilliant Adventure

Almost two weeks ago, Warner Music Group announced the agreement that will unite David Bowie's 2000-2016 recordings with the 1968-1999 catalogue already under the Warner umbrella.  The same announcement confirmed the resumption of the series of career-spanning Era box sets.  Now, it's been revealed that the fifth Era box, Brilliant Adventure (1992-2001), will arrive via Parlophone on November 26.  In addition to five remastered studio albums, a live concert, and three discs of rarities, the

Earlier today, Warner Music Group and the Estate of David Bowie announced a new partnership in which WMG will now have worldwide rights to Bowie's entire career-spanning catalogue [save a few early releases such as his self-titled 1967 Deram album].  Currently, WMG's agreement spans the period of 1968-1999, but the new deal will bring the late superstar's 2000-2016 recordings under the Warner umbrella, too, including his latter-day triumphs Heathen, Reality, The Next Day, and Blackstar.  These

Back to the Basics Chips Moman Songbook

Ace Records has had quite a 2021, from collections spotlighting the songs of Lou Reed and Donovan through this past week's releases from Petula Clark, late producer Norman Whitfield, and the ladies of Motown.  Today, we're taking a look at a pair of recent releases from the venerable label. Lincoln Wayne "Chips" Moman (1937-2016) may never have become a household name, but the music he helped create certainly did. A guitarist, producer, songwriter, and engineer, Moman pioneered the sound of

David Bowie The Width of a Circle Items

David Bowie's third album The Man Who Sold the World opened with the blistering "The Width of a Circle," an eight-minute blast of rock adrenaline culminating in the narrator's illicit encounter with a supernatural being in the burning pits of Hell.  Bowie had quickly come a long way from the music hall theatricality of his first eponymous LP and the psychedelic folk-rock of his second.  The 1970 LP welcomed guitarist Mick Ronson and drummer Woody Woodmansey, the first appearance on a Bowie album

Oh You Pretty Things

Oh! You Pretty Things: David Bowie's 1971 song became an anthem for the glam era: "Don't you know you're driving your mothers and fathers insane?  Let me make it plain, you gotta make way for the homo superior..."  Bowie's alien persona - androgynous, dangerous, sexy, and flamboyant - connected with youth and caused a stir among their parents.  The song's title has now been adopted by a new 3-CD box set from Cherry Red's Grapefruit imprint.  Alas, "Oh! You Pretty Things" doesn't appear anywhere

Last year, Cherry Red's RPM imprint closed up shop after almost 30 years and some 600+ releases.  But a new imprint was announced to pick up where RPM left off: Strawberry.  Its inaugural collection, Halcyon Days: '60s Mod, R&B, Brit Soul, and Freakbeat Nuggets has proved an auspicious debut for the imprint with big shoes to fill.
