The Estate of Tom Petty has announced the late rock-and-roller's first live album in more than a decade. Live at the Fillmore 1997 captures highlights from Petty and the Heartbreakers' blazing 20-show run as recorded at San Francisco's venerable Fillmore between January 10 and February 7, 1997. Six full shows were captured live, from which 58 songs have been culled for this release. Making this an even more special affair, 35 of the songs are covers and most unique to the Petty discography. Live at the Fillmore 1997 will be available on November 25 from Warner Records in a variety of formats including:
- 2CD (33 songs including 18 covers);
- 3LP (33 songs including 18 covers);
- 4CD (58 songs including 35 covers);
- 6LP (58 songs including 35 covers); and
- 6LP Uber Deluxe (58 songs including 35 covers).
Petty sought to give the Fillmore audiences something special, and so he and his Heartbreakers (Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Scott Thurston, Howie Epstein, and Steve Ferrone) played a variety of songs that had special meaning to them. Highlights of the set include powerful renditions of pal Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," J.J. Cale's "Crazy Mama," The Rolling Stones' "Time is On My Side," "It's All Over Now," and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," Booker T. and The MG's "Green Onions," Them's "Gloria," Grateful Dead's "Friend of the Devil," and a special mini-set with The Byrds' Roger McGuinn including "You Ain't Going Nowhere" and "Eight Miles High." John Lee Hooker also joined the band for a smoking run through "Boogie Chillen." Petty didn't ignore his own sizeable catalogue, however, and so fans were treated to crackling and rearranged live versions of "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "American Girl," "Runnin' Down a Dream," "Free Fallin'," and "I Won't Back Down." Tickets for the 999-capacity venue were just $35.00.
The Heartbreakers' Mike Campbell, who co-produced the new release with Ryan Ulyate, commented in the press release, "Playing the Fillmore in 1997 for a month was one of my favorite experiences as a musician in my whole life. The band was on fire and we changed the setlist every night. The room and the crowd was spiritual, and we got to play with some amazing guests. I will always remember those nights with joy and inspiration." Campbell's fellow Heartbreaker Benmont Tench executive produced the set along with Adria Petty, Annakim Petty, and Dana Petty.
The 2CD and 3LP iterations simulate a typical setlist for the run, while the expanded 4CD and 6LP versions offer even more of the classic songs that Petty and the Heartbreakers reinvented as their own. As Petty observed taking the stage on the final night of the sold-out run, "We all feel this might be the highpoint of our time together as a group...It's going to be hard to get us off this stage tonight." Ready to sample this set? "Listen to Your Heart" is streaming now at YouTube and all streaming services.
A 6LP Uber Deluxe Edition, exclusive to Petty's website, offers no additional music. It's housed in an handmade, custom-sized cymbal road case designed and manufactured by Made Worn in Los Angeles. This sturdy package also includes a replica "All Access" laminate, a reprint of the 8-page Fan Newsletter published in 1997, an embroidered patch, 7 additional replica setlists, an exclusive foil lithograph (12" x 12"), an exclusive vinyl record player slipmat, custom guitar picks in a tin, and a replica embroidered "Fillmore House Band" baseball hat. (The Heartbreakers earned that honorary title during the 20-show residency.)

Bruce Padgett says
Oh my, hope the Petty Estate has rethought the CD mastering policy which Tom preferred. IOW loud. Petty reserved the greatest dynamic range for vinyl only, but complaints from the audiophile community have been constant. Fingers crossed.
Rob M says
So you WANT loud CDs?
Bruce Padgett says
Clearly I don’t! For marketing reasons, it was Tom who specifically wanted his remastered CDs to have a narrower dynamic range than the LPs. 🤷🏼♂️
Gradese says
I must admit I'm a bit confused
You're saying
4CD (58 tracks - 18 covers);
6LP (58 tracks - 35 covers)
But I'm counting 72 track on both configurations, and this doesn't compute with either... Maybe I'm just tired
Joe Marchese says
I’ve clarified the text to reflect the total number of songs. The total number of tracks includes the introductions, spoken chatter, etc.
gradese says
so anyway the 6LP set has more tracks than the 4CD?
puzzling
Joe Marchese says
Hope I’ve cleared things up…the 6LP and 4CD sets are identical in content, as are the 2CD and 3LP sets to one another.
Paul E. says
Oh no another Tom Petty Store exclusive with this Uber Deluxe Edition. Not this time - I fell for that with the “Wildflowers & All The Rest” Super Deluxe that was supposed to be a Tom Petty Store exclusive and contained the, once again, exclusive “Finding Wildflowers” disc. A month later they released. the “Finding Wildflowers” CD as a single disc and the box was cheap as chips on Amazon.
JG says
Hey, at least this time they aren’t pretending that any of the music itself will be exclusive, and it’s just the random swag
David Olstein says
I'm disappointed that the compilers of this set lacked the imagination to figure out a way to make all six professionally recorded shows available to fans. They certainly aren't adverse to emptying the bank accounts of Tom Petty fans by charging high prices. Surely they could have offered the individual shows as downloads, inaugurating a series of official bootlegs, similar to what artists like Springsteen have been offering fans for years.
It's all the more the pity given that Tom Petty's regular tour setlists tended ot be fairly static, whereas the setlists from the Fillmore changed from night to night.
Has anyone confirmed whether all the material on the 2 disc box set is included in the 4 disc box set? And has anyone been able to determine whether the 4 CD box set contains 1 version of every song performed over the six nights that were professional recorded?
