Turn Your Radio On: Real Gone's March Lineup Includes John Hartford, Don Cherry, Saigon Kick, "The Devil Wears Prada," and More

John Hartford Aereo Plane

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Once again, Real Gone Music's March slate offers up an eclectic selection of genres ranging from bluegrass to funk to jazz to alt-country to hard rock to soundtrack music, all spanning the years 1971-2006.  All of these six vinyl reissue titles are due out tomorrow, March 3.  Read on for more details about each title.

John Hartford moved to Nashville in 1965 and signed with RCA Victor the next year.  The songwriter and multi-instrumentalist would record six studio albums for the label.  The second of these, 1967's Earthwords and Music, featured his song "Gentle on My Mind."  While his version only enjoyed modest success, Glen Campbell heard the tune and recorded his own take.  Winning four Grammys, the song would eventually become one of the most covered country songs in history.  With his newfound success, Hartford moved to L.A. and became a regular on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.  But he moved back to Nashville by the beginning of the 1970s and found a new label: Warner Bros. Records.  His first album for WB, 1971's Aereo-Plain, strikes a much more irreverent tone than his previous efforts.  While not a commercial success at the time, the album is now seen as a forerunner to "newgrass," or a more progressive form of bluegrass.  Hartford recorded one more album for Warner Bros. before moving on to other labels, including long stints on Flying Fish and Small Dog A Barkin'.  He passed away in 2001.

Real Gone's vinyl reissue is the first time the album has appeared on that format in 50 years.  It comes on "bone" white vinyl and features and inner sleeve with lyrics and liner notes from Hartford expert Skip Heller.  It is limited to 1,000 copies.

The South Side Movement

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Hailing from Chicago, soul/funk group The South Side Movement consisted of vocalist Melvin Moore, guitarist Bobby Pointer, keyboardist Morris Beeks, bassist Ronald Simmons, drummer Willie Hayes, alto saxophonist Milton Johnson, trumpeter Stephen Hawkins, and trombonist Bill McFarland.  After performing as the backing band for Simtec & Wylie, the group released their self-titled debut album on Wand in 1973.  All of the songs on the album (with the exception of a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition") were written or co-written by producer James Vanleer.  "I' Been Watching You" became a top 20 R&B hit and has been sampled by artists such as The Beastie Boys, Beck, Erykah Badu, Jadakiss, and more.  The South Side Movement recorded two more albums for Wand before disbanding in 1975.

Real Gone's new reissue of The South Side Movement is the first time the album has been reissued on vinyl.  It comes on "clearwater blue" vinyl.

Don Cherry Hear and Now

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Trumpeter Don Cherry rose to prominence performing in Ornette Coleman's groups beginning in the late 1950s.  By the middle of the 1960s, he was releasing albums as a leader.  In the 1970s, Cherry began to explore world fusion, incorporating influences of Middle Eastern, traditional African, and Indian music into his style.  He had been on several labels and, in 1977, recorded one album for Atlantic.  Hear & Now, produced by Narada Michael Walden, features eight songs, mostly all written by Cherry.  His supporting cast on the album includes Michael Brecker, Collin Walcott, Marcus Miller, Tony Williams, Steve Jordan, and Stan Samole.  Cherry would move on to several other labels before passing away in 1995.  His final solo album was 1990's Multikulti on A&M.

Real Gone's new reissue is the first American vinyl reissue of Hear & Now.

Saigon Kick Water

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Saigon Kick wanted to quickly capitalize on the success of their album The Lizard, which spawned the No. 12 hit "Love is On the Way."  So they went to Sweden to record Water, their third album for Atlantic Records.  However, tensions arose and lead vocalist and co-founder Matt Kramer and bassist Tom DeFile left during the session.  Jason Bieler (lead guitarist and also a co-founder) took over lead vocal duties, a new bassist (Chris McLernon) was hired, and recording continued.  Bieler would write all of the songs for the album (with the exception of a cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity") and also produce.  Unfortunately, the album did not fare well commercially upon release in 1993 and Atlantic dropped the hard rockers in 1994.  Saigon Kick moved on to other labels but broke up in 1999.  They reunited in 2012 for live performances but have not recorded another album together.

Real Gone's vinyl version is the first time Water has appeared in that format (joining Real Gone's vinyl debuts of Saigon Kick's first two Atlantic albums) and features an inner sleeve.

Bottle Rockets 24 Hours a Day

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Alt-country group The Bottle Rockets was formed in Missouri by guitarist and vocalist Brian Henneman after his song "Indianapolis" got him a record deal in 1992. He brought in Mark Ortmann (drums), Tom Parr (guitar, vocals), and Tom Ray (bass guitar) to fill out the rest of the band.  They recorded two albums for East Side Digital before being signed to Atlantic in 1995.  The label re-released their second album (scoring a No. 27 Rock hit with "Radar Gun") and work began on a third.  However, most of the staff who signed the group were fired and 24 Hours A Day did not see release until 1997.  Without support from the new regime, 24 Hours failed to make much of a dent commercially and the group left Atlantic in 1998.  They signed with Doolittle Records for a couple of albums and eventually ended up on Bloodshot Records.  They released their last studio album in 2018 and disbanded in 2021.

Real Gone's vinyl reissue marks the first time 24 Hours has appeared in that format.  It comes on "coke bottle" clear vinyl and features an inner sleeve.  It is limited to 1,000 copies.

The Devil Wears Prada OST

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

2006 saw the release of The Devil Wears Prada, a comedy-drama based upon the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger.  Set at a fictional fashion magazine, it stars Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a recent college graduate who becomes the assistant to Miranda Priestly, a powerful fashion editor played by Meryl Streep (and a character who is widely believed to be based on famed editor Anna Wintour).  The film co-star Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.  The biting look at the fashion industry became a hit with audiences, grossing over $300 million worldwide and also with critics.  Streep was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe.  It has remained a beloved film, and a musical adaptation with music by Elton John premiered in Chicago last year.

The soundtrack album, released a couple of weeks after the film in July 2006, has hits from various artists including Madonna, U2, Alanis Morrissette, Jamiroquai, and Beck.  Many of the songs were heard in the film.  The album concludes with a suite of score music by Theodore Shapiro.  Real Gone's new vinyl version marks the soundtrack's first appearance on the format.  It features a full-color inner sleeve and comes on black and white marble vinyl.

If you would like to give any of these titles hitting store shelves tomorrow a try, we've got the full tracklistings and ordering links below.

It is getting a bit depressing for this boomer to see the paucity of releases on cd. Sigh!

I hope staying tuned means we'll see more Real Gone releases on CD someday. I share Harry's distress that the label only seems interested in vinyl now. In fact, not to put too strong a point on it, I feel somewhat abandoned!

I can confirm that a number of CD projects are in development at Real Gone even as the label navigates the ongoing changes in the marketplace. I hope you like 'em! 🙂

Especially since Real Gone used to have such a rich CD release schedule.

Digital sources used to cut vinyl albums on crappy sounding swirly-coloured pressings. Waiting for the regressive vinyl scare to finally wane - why not release on both formats?

John Hartford signed the lyric sheet of my copy of Aereo-Plain(my original copy of the LP,purchased sealed, did not have the lyric sheet) while my wife & I told our tale of romance that eventually led to our middle age marriage. after his solo show at Godfrey Daniels,Bethlehem,Pa.. He hung around after like a preacher after service and thanking us for coming out. Just think,he did all the work,we benefited and he thanked us after the show. What a fine human being!
