Still Beatin': Huey Lewis and The News Get Expanded Japanese Albums, CD/DVD Collection

Have you heard The News? The sweet pop/rock/soul sound of San Francisco's Huey Lewis & The News has sadly gone silent in recent years, thanks to its one-of-a-kind frontman's battle with Ménière's disease, which causes intermittent hearing loss. But a surprise new reissue campaign courtesy of Universal Music Group's Japanese division promises the most comprehensive look at the band's blockbuster catalogue of the '80s and early '90s.

UMG will remaster, expand and reissue the six albums the group cut between 1980 and 1991 for the Chrysalis and EMI labels. Each album is sourced from new DSD masters from original U.S. analog tapes, transferred in 24-bit high definition and feature CD-sized reprints of the original inner LP sleeves and Japanese obi strips. (The outer jackets have been replicated as well, with 1982's Picture This utilizing an alternate design released in Japan at the time.) There's 44 bonus tracks among the reissues, from tracks that appeared on previous expanded editions and international pressings to versions making their debuts on CD for the first time. (Sports, the group's 1983 breakthrough, becomes a 2CD set in honor of its 40th anniversary!) Also coming is a CD/DVD Greatest Hits: Japanese Singles Collection that will include 19 of the group's singles released during this time in Japan plus a DVD of 23 rare and commercially unreleased promo videos. (It is not known if this disc will be region free, or if single edits will be used on the CD.)

It's the perfect tribute to one of the hardest working bands of their generation - seasoned studio pros whose live performances remained deeply engaging long after their time at the top of the charts ended. Singer Huey Lewis had busked his way around Europe in the '70s, learning blues harp and becoming a minor fixture on the U.K. pub rock scene as part of the group Clover. (That group, sans Lewis, backed Elvis Costello on his debut My Aim is True; Huey would be first heard on record playing with Thin Lizzy on their blockbuster Live and Dangerous.)

Lewis and Clover bandmate/keyboardist Sean Hopper would eventually head back to their native Bay Area, recruiting drummer Bill Gibson, saxophonist/guitarist Johnny Colla and bassist Mario Cipollina (brother of Quicksilver Messenger Service guitarist John Cipollina) into a short-lived band called American Express, who cut a bizarre disco cover of Elmer Bernstein's Exodus theme on a single for Phonogram. Adding lead guitarist Chris Hayes in 1979, the rechristened Huey Lewis & The News would sign to Chrysalis and toil in relative obscurity until Picture This yielded an irresistible Top 10 in the Mutt Lange-penned "Do You Believe in Love." (The first two albums featured longtime staples of the group's live sets, including "Workin' for a Livin'," "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do" and "Trouble in Paradise.")

What happened next took everyone by surprise. Sports, the band's self-produced 1983 album, took the pop world by storm, thanks in part to some seriously catchy tunes and colorful videos to match on the nascent MTV. "Heart and Soul," "I Want a New Drug," "The Heart of Rock & Roll" and "If This is It" all reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, and "Walking on a Thin Line" hit the Top 20. A year later, having infamously turned down the chance to record a theme song for Ghostbusters in 1984 (and settling a suit against Ray Parker Jr., whose chart-topping track for the film sounded in passing like "I Want a New Drug"), Huey Lewis and The News recorded two tracks for the sci-fi comedy Back to the Future; the single "The Power of Love," bolstered in part by the film's blockbuster performance, gave the group their first No. 1 single.

But The News wasn't done breaking big yet. Also in 1985, Lewis would appear on the charity chart-topper "We Are the World," and donated a fan favorite live recording of "Trouble in Paradise" to the accompanying album. And "The Power of Love" teed up their next album Fore!, which yielded an unbelievable five Top 10 hits of its own: the chart-toppers "Stuck with You" and "Jacob's Ladder" (the latter an early credit for jazz-pop icon Bruce Hornsby, whose debut album was partially produced by Lewis), the Top 5 "Hip to Be Square," plus "Doing It All for My Baby" and "I Know What I Like."

After "Perfect World," the lead single from 1988's Small World, reached No. 3, Lewis' imperial phase was essentially over. The album's hard-driving title track, featuring one of the last performances by saxophonist Stan Getz, stalled on the charts, and 1991's Hard At Play yielded no Top 10 hits. Outside of a soul covers album in 1994, the group largely stayed on the road for the rest of their careers, recording various projects intermittently through the 21st century. But the goodwill toward the group never really went away, even when one of fiction's most notorious serial killers turned out to be a big fan. 2020 saw the release of Weather, a short but effective album recorded right before Lewis' diagnosis; a documentary and jukebox musical featuring the group's catalogue are both in the works, and their two Back to the Future tracks are nestled comfortably beside a new song score for an acclaimed West End adaptation of the film slated to hit Broadway this summer.

With improved sound, deep archival content, and a greater presence on disc for the band's extremely rare debut, it seems like the heart of rock and roll really is still beating. The titles will be available in Japan on June 23 and will likely show up beyond the country's Universal Music store in the coming months.

How cool! I made "home made" versions of these albums years ago, using the EPs, single, and other sources.

It'll be nice to have them in improved sound quality.

Great to see all their albums being reissued in such a great way. I was a big fan when I saw their concert on MTV back in the day. I've been lucky enough to share a stage with Sean Hopper a couple times. He's a fantastic musician and a great guy. I got to see The News a few times over the years. They are in my top favorite bands of all time.

Agreed! This catalogue has been overlooked for too long. Great to see it getting the attention it deserves. I was never a fan of Huey Lewis until I was dragged to one of his concerts back in '88. Superb show & I was won over. I'll be investing, definitely. The only item i don't notice that totally could have been included is the promo John Luongo remix of Give Me The Keys.

Really hoping these get released in North America, preferably with the albums in one set alongside a disc of rarities culled from all the hits sets and other singles collections. (The Canadian version of the 90s hits disc has a version of "Heart of Rock & Roll" that mentions Toronto and Montreal!)

One way or another, I am anxious to get these in my collection. You can never have enough Huey!

Those were probably just cut for radio play. I remember WLS in Chicago had some songs like that back in the day. That would be cool to find, though.

Besides wondering if the dvd will be region free, it would be nice if they were upgraded to 4K. I've seen a couple videos from the '80's upgraded and the increased quality was amazing. I think Huey thinks the videos were kind of a joke, but I've watched them over and over...........and I believe they helped sell a lot of records!

There seems to be a real reluctance in the US for people to buy region free DVD & BD players. I started buying DVDs in 1998, BDs in 2012 - made sure to get a multi region player both times. They’re very common & reasonably cheap (especially DVD players - c.30 euro) in Ireland / UK.

Thanks Paul. I did own a region free dvd player back in the day, but I think it is time jump back in the game. Too many good looking releases (mostly movies) that are not in the "US and A" region.

These expanded reissues are much welcome...the singles CD/DVD is a nice upgrade from the Capitol CD/DVD collection that had only 10 of these clips (and fun Jimmy Kimmel liners), the expanded album CDs look great too...previously, the only album to get the expanded treatment was "Sports", but this one looks much better...and good that all the albums up through "Hard At Play" are getting expanded, all are good to great, the ones after, starting with the Elektra ones I can track down for cheap...and agree that they were (are??) a solid fun live band...the last show I saw them do was a New Years Eve show in around 2015, opening for Jimmy Buffet at Brooklyn's Barclays Center...great show...sucks what Huey is going through...

This release looks good. Throughout the early to late 1980’s Huey and his stellar band had many live FM Broadcasts that are available if you search for them online most are excellent sounding. I personally, would like to see additional live material. We saw Huey and the News 1985 and 87. Packed arenas and was prime Huey Lewis time.

Disc 2 of "Sports" has an incorrect track listing as well. It's 14 Tracks, not 15. Apparently this track is not on the CD:

    12. Bad is Bad (Live @ The Kabuki Theatre, San Francisco, CA - 2/21/1985)

So the last three tracks should be as follows:

    12. I Want a New Drug (Live @ The Rock Palace, Los Angeles, CA - 1/15/1984)
    13. If This is It (Live @ The Kabuki Theatre, San Francisco, CA - 2/21/1985)
    14. I Want a New Drug (Live)

This reissue series is the perfect time to make a retrospective of all the different video compilations released since the 80’s, in different formats, VHS, LASERDISC or DVD.

For those who believe that the DVD added to GREATEST HITS : JAPANESE SINGLES COLLECTION will make a “complete” collection of all the official videos from Huey Lewis, I’m sorry but you will lose some illusions…

First of all the complete of the previous video releases:

    LASERDISC VIDEO HITS (1986)

    01 “National Anthem”
02 “The Heart of Rock & Roll”

09 “Doin’ it (All For my Baby)”
10 “Workin’ for a Livin’” (LIVE 1982 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED)

    Several things to note:
The “Workin’ For a Livin’” video is not the same on LASERDISC VIDEO HITS (1986) and DVD GREATEST HITS (2006). The first one is a live performance not from the LASERDISC THE HEART OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL (1985). The second one is another live performance recorded on April 29th, 1982 with Tower of Power Horns in Country Club, Reseda, CA. But there’s a third official video, available on youtube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcIK3akktLU, which is the studio version. Which version is on the new Japanese DVD ? Would love to know.

The long version of “The Power of Love” on DVD GREATEST HITS (2006) was not previously unreleased because it was already released on DVD BEST CLIPS (2001) in Japan. But this last one was really an official release ? God Techs Records is a very strange label…

On LASERDISC FORE & MORE (1986), “Stuck With You” was announced as a live version, but it’s a mistake, it’s “Jacob’s Ladder” which is live, like “Simple as That”, both were from an official concert release from the FORE Tour, ALL THE WAY LIVE.

So there are some videos previously released unfortunately missing on this new Japanese DVD:
Three from the LASERDISC VIDEO HITS (1986) (all three unavailable elsewhere)
The “National Anthem” video is a live performance from the band in a baseball of football stadium, don’t know where or when. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtvBMn0A5cA
The “Is it Me” video is just a collection of pictures of all the News members when they were young. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cx1TvNBelT4
The “Finally Found a Home” video is just the end credits of the Laserdisc.

Three from LASERDISC FORE & MORE (1987)
Two parts of The Making of “Doin’ it” which show how the video was made, unavailable elsewhere.
“Simple as That” (LIVE) (from LASERDISC ALL THE WAY LIVE – 1987)

So if you already have: LASERDISC VIDEO HITS (1986), keep it !
LASERDISC FORE & MORE (1987), keep it !
LASERDISC FOUR CHORDS & SEVERAL YEARS AGO – THE CONCERT (1994), keep it for the concert, never reissued on DVD or bluray.
DVD BEST CLIPS (2001), try to sell it, all the seven videos inside are on the new Japanese DVD.
DVD BONUS GREATEST HITS (2006), it depends of which “Workin’ for a Livin’” is on the new Japanese DVD, if it’s the same live performance from 1982 with Tower of Power Horns, try to sell it.

The only new videos on the JAPANESE SINGLES COLLECTION DVD are:
“Hope You Love me Like You Say You do”, “Small World”, “It Hit me Like a Hammer” and “He Don’t Know”.
