As the bassist for The Feelies from 1983 to 1991 - and again for their ongoing 21st century reunions - Brenda Sauter had a front row seat to some of the best underground sounds of the New York metropolitan area during a crucial time for indie rock. This month, one of her most significant solo projects will get its due thanks to a special Record Store Day reissue and a rarities-packed digital expanded edition.
Wild Carnation, the outfit Sauter fronted (alongside guitarist/organist Richard Barnes and drummer Christopher Donovan) in the years after The Feelies called it a day, were of a piece with the jangle-pop group that R.E.M. claimed as an early influence. There were bright hooks to go around (The Chicago Tribune praised their "hypnotic, surfing the waves melodies") but they were played with a slightly edgier nature. In the wake of her old group's temporary demise, Sauter's work with Wild Carnation - chiefly the 1994 album Tricycle - was seen by some critics as the best fix fans of The Feelies' sound could uncover.
Now, nearly 30 years since its original release,, Delmore Recording Society - the label that originally released Tricycle - will give the record its first spin on (what else?) white carnation vinyl. It'll be an extremely limited Record Store Day release next weekend (April 22), with only 500 copies being pressed. But an accompanying download code promises even more delights for fans of Wild Carnation or the role they fulfilled: a greatly expanded version of the album featuring 19 bonus tracks, including rare and unreleased demos and a mostly unheard live set recorded in Germany in 1997. That expanded edition will be available the week after Record Store Day (April 28) on all digital platforms.
If you're a jangle-pop fan, you'll no doubt want this on your radar. Have a listen to one of the bonus tracks - a demo of debut single "Dodger Blue" - and check out the full track list below. The digital expansion is available to pre-order at Bandcamp.

Any info on whether there might be a wider release of this post-RSD? 500 seems like a shot in the dark to obtain!
