Let's go, girls! Years after revisiting one of her first major releases, 1995's The Woman in Me, country-pop icon Shania Twain will do the same for her 1997 follow-up Come On Over - the album that made her a pop star.
Due in stores August 25, the Diamond Edition of Come On Over will feature a number of formats, including 2CD/2LP standard editions and 3CD/3LP deluxe packages. The 3CD includes both mixes of the acclaimed album - the standard country/pop/rock mix issued in America and a second "international" dance version released around the world in 1998 and 1999 - as well as a nine-track collection of new and old remixes and live tracks, including guest appearances from Elton John, Backstreet Boys, Alison Krauss & Union Station and Chris Martin of Coldplay. (Vinyl deluxe editions will include the bonus disc with either version of the album.)
Like The Woman in Me before it, Come On Over found Canadian singer Twain teaming up with Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who took his maximalist rock songwriting and production style (made famous on AC/DC's Back in Black and hit albums by Def Leppard and Bryan Adams) and plugged it into the Nashville machine. (Their whirlwind relationship inspired much of the writing of The Woman in Me, Come On Over and 2001's Up!) The hooks were arguably even more undeniable this time around, and Come On Over yielded not only eight Billboard Top 10 country singles (fully half the album!) but saw three of them - the ballads "You're Still the One" and "From This Moment On" and the uptempo feminist anthem "That Don't Impress Me Much" - cross over into the Top 10 of the Hot 100.
When the dust had settled, Come On Over was 1999's bestselling album, certified by various worldwide record counters as having shipped 39 million copies worldwide (20 million in the U.S. alone). She'd also win four Grammy Awards during the album cycle: two for Best Country Song ("You're Still the One" and the title track) and two for Best Female Country Vocal Performance ("You're Still the One" and the lauded "Man! I Feel Like a Woman").
After Up! netted Twain a third diamond-certified album in America, she'd retreat from the public eye, battling health issues and rebuilding after the collapse of her marriage to Lange. (He infamously had an affair with her best friend, and she in turn would find love with the man that friend left behind.) She since released albums in 2017 and 2023, was the subject of a Netflix documentary and re-established herself as a top country concert draw and an elder stateswoman of sorts to the type of female country crossover acts like the Chicks, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and Maren Morris.

Kind of a bummer this doesn't include video content. She was, especially with this album, a very visual artist as well, and it's certainly part of the nostalgia for this album. I worked at PolyGram/Universal when this was released and it really was a massive worldwide hit album in just about every region. Honestly, it deserved a proper box set with all the bells and whistles.

That Don't Impress Me Much
i am buying this to match the "Woman In Me" 3CD Diamond set, but yeah I was expecting a better disc 3 & even a disc 4, as weren't there a ton more mixes, like "That Don't Impress Me Much"?? Also, a correction, on the International Version of COO, "From This Moment On" was NOT a duet with Bryan White, it was the solo pop single version, and that version of the album was NOT a dance remix at all, it was the pop version of the album, like the "Red" mix of "Up!!", the superior standard...see, Shania Twain was NEVER a "country" artist, ever!! Like Taylor Swift was NEVER one either!! The problem was she was saddled with the term when she signed her contract with Mercury Nashville via her clueless manager who had connections with Nashville...and because of that contract, she was saddled with being marketed as a country singer...her original sound in the 80s was like a Canadian version of 80s Heart with a helping of dancepop, no country at all!! That 1993 Mercury Nashville debut was generic cookiecutter Nashville slop by outside songwriters & not a trace of her talent or personality...if Mutt Lange did not by chance come across that video and see SOMETHING in her, that would have been her only album, as she for sure would have been dropped...she was disappointed in that she was saddled with a style & marketing term she did not identify with, but she made the most of the situation...luckily, his style mixed with her's and they together were able to expand the parameters, while pi$$ing off Nashville in the process..."Come On Over" was the first true synthesis of Shania & Mutt's powerpop/Def Leppard/ACDC/Europop genius style with a trace of Nashville...the original album was the first taste of it, but the International Version was the TRUE VISION of it...the pop mix of "Man!! I Feel Like A Woman!!" is better than the popular one...it takes out the violin saws and adds more of a subtle dancebeat & rocking guitar..."You're Still The One" is sweeter & better cuz it takes out the unnecessary steel guitar & betters the chorus mix, "From This Moment On" takes the unnecessary duet vocal out, and "That Don't Impress Me Much" works both ways, but I like the Eurodance feel better than the pop country one...we'll see if the tag at the end is intact, where she mentions John Wayne, hope so...there is only 2, maybe 3 instances where the International mix misses something..."Honey I'm Home" (the steel guitar on the chorus fills a hole that is left open), "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)" (the highstepping melody works better on the original than the jiggy violin on the International, has more of a catchy powerpop feel, which is odd cuz you normally don't associate violin with powerpop, and it's no way a country song either, structurally), and maybe "Love Gets Me Every Time" where the violin lines work better on the original mix than the guitar stabs on the International Mix, like a hole is created by taking the violin out but don't add a cool powerpop or Eurodance element to fill the hole...
As you can tell, I've lived with this album, both versions, since 1997/1998, and analyzed it top to bottom, it's a great catchy powerpop album that showcases Shania's & Mutt's gifts to full effect and I've been waiting for this set to drop with baited breath, looking forward to it, disappointed in Disc 3, but that means I may have to track down CD singles & 12" vinyl to complete it...as for "Up!!", looking forward to that as well, and I hope all 3 mixes are on there, yet the green one is terrible & unnecessary, as it's not a "country" album, the red is the standard & the "bollywood" blue is quite interesting...
And lastly, again, Shania Twain is not country, never was & never will be!! She's just going along with it even though she would agree with me, because she does not want to alienate any off her fanbase who may think otherwise...she's just going to the bank, not worth fighting mismarketing terms, it's too late...
Interesting to read your aversion to the US 'countrish' mix. As a European I really like the US mix too (even though it's not really country). I always enjoyed both the US and international mixes of 'The Woman In Me', Come On Over', and 'Up'.
One thing that needs to be corrected in my opinion is the label of the international version often receives. It's not a dance version or Europop at all. The international version is a downright pop mix. Some single remixes are dance remixes, that's 100% correct, but the international album itself is pop. Nothing more, nothing less.
This reissue could easily have been a 5CD box set (or for my part an extended digital release), including all the different mixes. But this reissue is very disappointing. There's only one period single remix! Total madness.
This is what I've come up with that is missing from this set. There may be others but sometimes the naming of the mixes/remixes can be a little sketchy in this period of Shania's career so if there were 2 mixes/remixes with different names but the same time code, I did not include both. As far as the songs from the DirecTV special, I did not include all of the COO era songs from that special, I just included those released on CD/Cassette/Vinyl singles.
I hope they continue what they've started with the release of the "Don't Be Stupid! (You Know I Love You)", "When", "Man! I Feel Like A Woman", "Party For Two" and "Don't!" singles.
