Down the Road Apiece: ABKCO Revisits Rolling Stones’ Catalogue on Vinyl as Band Preps “Hackney Diamonds”

Following the vinyl reissues earlier this year of 2016’s The Rolling Stones in Mono box set and various classic albums (the U.S. editions of 1966’s Aftermath and 1967’s Between the Buttons, the U.S. and U.K. iterations of the 1966 compilation Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass), 1967’s Flowers, and 1975’s Metamorphosis), ABKCO is returning to the Stones’ catalogue for a series which will encompass another 15 vinyl reissues.  For the rest of 2023 and into 2024, the label will revisit U.S. and U.K. versions of the Stones’ 1963-1970 discography on black 180-gram vinyl.  A number of these titles have been unavailable on standalone vinyl for almost four decades.  These might well prove complementary to the highly-anticipated October 20 release of Hackney Diamonds, the band’s first album of original material since 2005 and first album since 2016.  It also marks the Stones’ first-ever album without Charlie Watts, though the late drummer is represented via recordings made before his death.  Hackney Diamonds will be available in a plethora of formats, from standard CD and LP to vinyl variants for every Major League Baseball team (!), but ABKCO’s vinyl titles are a bit more straightforward to collect.

Last month, ABKCO turned the clock back to 1965’s Out of Our Heads with reissues of both the U.S. and U.K. versions of the album.  The Stones’ first U.S. chart-topping LP, it boasted the No. 1 smash “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” alongside covers of Solomon Burke (“Cry to Me”), Don Covay (“Mercy, Mercy”), Marvin Gaye (“Hitch Hike”), and Sam Cooke (“Good Times”).  The U.S. has “The Last Time,” while “I’m Free” and “The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man” are unique to the U.K. version.  Earlier in October, the Stones’ self-titled U.S. debut (subtitled England’s Newest Hit Makers) joined the collection.

On October 20 – the same date as Hackney Diamonds is unveiled – more hits are rounded up on the U.K.’s Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) (1969), with the U.S. version of the LP already in stores now.  The U.K. track listing contains “You Better Move On,” “Sittin’ on a Fence,” and “We Love You,” while the shorter U.S. sequence offers the chart-topping “Paint It, Black” and top ten hit “Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing In The Shadow?”  Both of these seminal compilations remain powerful distillations of the early Stones sound.

December 1 will next see the reissue of The Rolling Stones No. 2 (1965), as well as December’s Children (and Everybody’s) (1965), a U.S. album which collected some of the material from the U.K. Out Of Our Heads plus the rocker “Get Off Of My Cloud” and ballad “As Tears Go By.” Got Live If You Want It! (1966) returns on the same date.  The U.S. release was culled from three concerts recorded earlier in the year in England as well as studio recordings of “Fortune Teller” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.”  Early 2024 promises a reissue of the group’s 1964 U.K. debut The Rolling Stones and the following year’s The Rolling Stones, Now! containing the band’s cover of “Little Red Rooster” and another Jagger/Richards ballad gem, “Heart of Stone.”

Look for all of these titles as the year continues to unfold.  You’ll find track listings and pre-order links (where available) below.  Hackney Diamonds will be available in a variety of editions on CD and vinyl around the world; select links are provided below.

    1. These titles have been mastered by Bob Ludwig. Reissue producer Teri Landi has handled the analog to digital transfers. Lacquers have been cut at Abbey Road by Sean Magee.

  1. another USELESS release from abkco. all of these releases are easy to find new or used. what should be a abkco competing is the rolling stones 63/66 the beginnings . a 4cd of studio tracks unreleased, studio in both mono and stereo. with a 2nd volume 4 cd fully realized, 67 to 69 again all tracks unreleased studio in mono and stereo. a deluxe box set with all 8 discs in a special box will be a limited release.

  2. All of this stuff has been reissued many times.
Abkco is just milking it again. These remasters were done many years ago
Only good if you don’t have them already
