Johnny Mathis, Christmas Time Is Here (Legacy/Real Gone/Second Disc)

CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
"Christmas Tree Green" Vinyl LP: RealGoneMusic.com / Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada
"Holly Red" Vinyl LP: BarnesandNoble.com

Johnny Mathis is back with his first album since 2017 and his first yuletide set in a decade.  Christmas Time Is Here boasts ten newly-recorded tracks including those which premiered last year on the digital-only EP A Merry Little Christmas.  It's Mathis' seventh full Christmas LP (not counting 1999's Listen! It's Christmas for Hallmark stores, on which he contributed six new recordings). Produced by longtime Mathis collaborators Jay Landers (Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler) and Fred Mollin (Jimmy Webb, Linda Ronstadt), Christmas Time Is Here finds the singer revisiting many of his favorite seasonal songs and adding two - the bluesy "Merry Christmas, Baby" and heartfelt "Auld Lang Syne" - to his already-considerable repertoire.  It's available on vinyl from Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records (including a "Christmas tree green" pressing available everywhere and a "Holly Red" pressing exclusively at Barnes & Noble) and on CD from Legacy Recordings. Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Heins Hoffman-Richter, a.k.a. Rod McKuen, Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease (Real Gone/Second Disc) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada / Real Gone Music / Vinyl Me, Please)

Tired of "Monster Mash"? Through with calling "Ghostbusters"? If your Halloween playlist is begging for something different, Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records have you covered with Music to Freak Your Friends and Break Your Lease.  One of the most unusual records of all time, this "Symphony for Tape Delay, IBM Instruction Manual, & Ohm Septet" was credited upon its original release in 1974 to "recognized raconteur, genius, composer, musicologist, conductor" Heins Hoffman-Richter, whom the original liner notes blithely informed us "died from an ear lobe tumor." Who? you might ask. It turns out that the late Hoffman-Richter was none other than best-selling poet and all-time cult music hero Rod McKuen (Listen to the Warm, "Seasons in the Sun")...but you won't find any cats named Sloopy here.  This excursion into the avant-garde realm of musique concrete has to be heard to be believed. It arrives on "seaglass with black swirl" vinyl in a package that replicates the collectible original release.  A glow-in-the-dark pressing is strictly limited to 100 units and available directly from Real Gone Music, while 300 copies on "antifreeze green" vinyl will be earmarked for Vinyl Me, Please. The LP, in all formats, additionally includes an insert with new liner notes from TSD's Joe Marchese. Get more details here.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, FYFTY (Geffen/UMe) (Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K. / Amazon Canada)

The most comprehensive Lynyrd Skynyrd overview since 1991's 3-CD The Definitive Lynyrd Skynyrd Collection, the new 4-CD box set FYFTY is housed in 12x12 vinyl-style packaging.  Its gatefold jacket houses a 40-page booklet with photos, opening notes by filmmaker-journalist Cameron Crowe, and track-by-track liner notes from music historian Gary Graff.  The box's track listing draws on 14 studio albums plus rarities and live recordings, as well as two previously unreleased tracks: a July 7, 1976 performance of "Free Bird" at Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre - in place of the studio original - and a November 13, 2022 live take of "Gimme Three Steps" from Nashville's storied Ryman Auditorium from what proved to be founding member Gary Rossington's final performance with the band. Blue Engine Records, the label associated with Jazz at Lincoln Center, has a major archival release today in "THE LOVE SUITE: IN MAHOGANY" featuring the late ROY HARGROVE

"Roy Hargrove, named “the most impactful trumpeter of his generation” by The New York Times, left behind a remarkable legacy when he passed in 2018. Now, Blue Engine Records, celebrates Hargrove’s legacy with the release of an unearthed gem from the JALC archives: Roy Hargrove’s The Love Suite: In Mahogany – Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center, a live performance of a JALC-commissioned suite that Hargrove never played in full again.

"Commissioned by Jazz at Lincoln Center to compose and perform The Love Suite: In Mahogany, a then-23-year-old Hargrove demonstrates a remarkably mature approach to his craft. For the first time, this historic concert—captured at Alice Tully Hall in 1993 during one of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s earliest seasons—is available via digital streaming platforms. This album showcases the trumpet virtuosity and soulful songwriting for which Hargrove continues to be celebrated."

One new release I found strange and ridiculous is the 4-song EP by indie female supergroup trio Boygenius called "The Rest"...like OK it's 4 extra songs from the major label debut album on Interscope, thing is, it was priced between $16.99 & $19.99 in various stores...on CD, not the vinyl...for FOUR SONGS!! I just had to laugh!! Should be max $7.99, maybe $9.99!! That price should be for the VINYL maybe, NOT the CD, packaged in a thin cardboard wallet, not a deluxe package...crazy!! The Agnetha "A+" 2CD deluxe was $22.99, a tad high, not too bad though, and still better value than that Boygenius EP, sheesh!!
