If you're a Second Disc reader, you're no doubt aware of the immense musical power film composer John Williams has over us (and people like us!). Even a casual fan surely knows his most familiar works for the screen, from Star Wars and Indiana Jones to Jurassic Park and Harry Potter; the films of Steven Spielberg (JAWS, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler's List); themes for everything from Superman to the Olympics. He's picked up five Oscars (53 nominations, second only to Walt Disney), 25 Grammys, the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award (the only composer to receive the honor), induction into the Kennedy Center Honors, Songwriters Hall of Fame and countless others.
The vastness of his career - at 91 years old, he completed a fifth and final Indiana Jones soundtrack last year and continues to conduct orchestras in concert halls around the globe - is almost impossible to distill into any sort of package. But by heaven, a label has tried their damnedest to do so: French label Pantheon, in conjunction with Universal Music Group, recently issued The Legend of John Williams, a whopping 20CD box set that takes a wide-angle view into the Maestro's rich history.
A part of Universal France's ongoing film score series Écoutez Le Cinéma!, which has undertaken similarly massive sets for Ennio Morricone and Michel Legrand, The Legend of John Williams presents nearly two dozen thematic discs capturing Williams' evolution from lighthearted jazz composer to a bold commander of a dormant, Romantic orchestral sound on screen that spawned generations of imitators. It's drawn almost entirely from previously released material, albeit a wealth of cross-licensed material and performances spanning just about all of his active years and pathways rarely explored in his career, to boot. Producer Stéphane Lerouge's liner notes (in an oversized book-bound package) include testimonials from collaborators like director Oliver Stone (who recruited Williams for three films), songwriter Alan Bergman and others - plus, in a stunning coup, a new interview with the composer himself.
The set first presents a pair of discs chronicling Williams' tenure succeeding the late Arthur Fiedler as the principal conductor of the Boston Pops, a position he held between 1980 and 1995 (he remains conductor laureate and performs with the orchestra every summer). Listeners will enjoy Williams' early recordings of suites from the Star Wars trilogy, music from other hit films (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman: The Movie, Home Alone) and familiar favorites like his still-used theme for the 1984 Summer Olympics, an original piece written for the Statue of Liberty's centennial, and "The Mission," a stirring theme for the NBC Nightly News.
Early scores are the subject of the set's third disc, including the TV series Checkmate, early favorites like How to Steal a Million, Not with My Wife, You Don't! and the just-reissued Heidi TV movie. From there, the discs largely focus on collaborations with directors, offering portions or in some cases the entirety of an original soundtrack album. Mark Rydell (Cinderella Liberty, The River), Williams' disaster triptych (The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Earthquake), Clint Eastwood (The Eiger Sanction), Robert Altman (The Long Goodbye, Images), Oliver Stone (Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, Nixon), Ron Howard (Far and Away), John Badham (Dracula), Brian De Palma (The Fury), Alfred Hitchcock (Family Plot), John Frankenheimer (Black Sunday) and Sydney Pollack (Sabrina) all get their due. Oh, and of course there's the nearly 50-year collaboration with Spielberg, represented across three and a half of the set's discs and covering JAWS, E.T., the Indiana Jones series, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List and more.
In the box's final three discs, Williams' most eclectic avenues are celebrated. Just about all of Across the Stars, his late-period collaborations with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, is presented on Disc 18, while Disc 19 offers a unique selection of the composer's non-film concert works. The late '60s/early '70s works "Prelude and Fugue for Orchestra" (performed by the Los Angeles Neophonic Orchestra under the baton of Stan Kenton) and "Sinfonietta for Wind Ensemble" (performed by the Eastman Wind Ensemble as conducted by Donald Hunsberger) are included here - among the rarest on the set, and seemingly making their CD debuts - as are the later "Elegy for Cello and Orchestra" and Violin Concerto No. 2, performed on record with Mutter in 2022.
Finally, though not primarily known as a songsmith, some of Williams' works in that vein - as well as unique performances of his best-loved themes by others - make up the final disc. This program includes versions of several collaborations with songwriters Marilyn and Alan Bergman: two versions of Fitzwilly theme "Make Me Rainbows" (one by Ella Fitzgerald and the Count Basie Orchestra, and one by crooner Vic Damone); the Oscar-nominated "If We Were in Love" from the Luciano Pavarotti starring vehicle Yes, Giorgio; a take on "Dream Away" from the 1973 Western The Man Who Loved Cat Dancing by Frank Sinatra; and "The Same Hello, The Same Goodbye," a song commissioned by the trio by Sinatra but never recorded - here in a 2011 version by Barbra Streisand. (Another Williams-Bergman rarity, "Come Tuesday," sung by Alan himself, is the sole unreleased track on the box.) Also of note on this final disc? There's a take on the Gershwin chestnut "Fascinatin' Rhythm" from a 1961 jazz album by Williams, a guest appearance by Williams adding harpsichord to a Henry Mancini original, "A Powdered Wig"; and jazzy takes on themes from E.T., the Spielberg caper Catch Me If You Can and even Eastwood's The Eiger Sanction (done by the director's son, jazz bassist/composer Kyle Eastwood).
The Legend of John Williams is a unique and perhaps even challenging release. It's got a lot of essential material for the new fan that is likely useless to aficionados who've collected the many reissues of Williams' works over the last few decades. (On a personal level, as a Williams superfan: there's about three or four discs' worth of stuff that is not already at Second Disc HQ.) But perhaps the handsome package - and the promise of a new chat with Williams - might encourage some casual-bordering-on-enthusiastic fans or patient, deep-pocketed collectors. You yourself can become one at the link below; you'll also find the full, annotated track list.

Kevin Hopkins says
I may have missed it in the article, but what language is the book in? French or English? Thank you!
Joe Marchese says
All text is in both English and French.
David says
This looks like it's very complementary to both the "John Williams Conductor" box set on Sony Classical and the "John Williams and The Boston Pops Orchestra" box set on Philips. I will definitely get it since the Boston Pops Orchestra selections make up of only two of the 20 CDs in this box set.
