Sweet Dream: Jethro Tull Expands Live "Bursting Out" In New "Inflated Edition" Remixed by Steven Wilson

Jethro Tull Bursting Out

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Jethro Tull's first live album, 1978's Bursting Out, hit stores in September 1978.  It was recorded just a few months earlier as Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Glascock, John Evan, Dee Palmer, and Barriemore Barlow toured behind their eleventh studio album, Heavy Horses.  On June 21, it will return from Rhino in a new 3CD/3DVD book-style edition featuring new remixes by Steven Wilson and an array of bonus material.

Bursting Out: The Inflated Edition contains:

  • CD 1: Jethro Tull Live: Bursting Out (Part 1) - A Steven Wilson stereo remix incorporating previously unreleased songs and soundcheck performances.
  • CD 2: Jethro Tull Live: Bursting Out (Part 2) - A Steven Wilson stereo remix incorporating previously unreleased songs and soundcheck performances.
  • CD 3: Contains an edited version of the 1978 Madison Square Garden concert which was issued in 2009. Newly remixed by Steven Wilson.
  • DVDs 1 & 2 have the remixed tracks in 96/24 stereo and 5.1 surround plus the flat transfers of the original album at 96/24 stereo.
  • DVD 3 has the full 93-minute MSG show, including 50+ minutes of video which was part of a transatlantic broadcast with the BBC and Radio 1. The audio is 48/24 stereo and 5.1 surround.

The original Bursting Out peaked within the U.K. top 20 at No. 17, and placed just outside of the U.S. top 20 at No. 21.  It included the band's live renditions of songs from Heavy Horses ("No Lullaby," "One Brown Mouse") as well as past LPs including Aqualung ("Cross-Eyed Mary," "Aqualung," "Locomotive Breath"), Songs from the Wood ("Jack in the Green," "Songs from the Wood," "Hunting Girl"), Thick as a Brick (the title song), and more.

This release represents the first major expansion for the album.  When it first came to CD in 1990, Bursting Out was released as a 2CD set in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, but as a single CD only in the United States, with three songs ("Quatrain," "Sweet Dream" and "Conundrum") omitted due to timing restrictions.  The 2-CD U.K./Europe edition sequenced the introductions for each disc on the same track as the first song.  In 2004, Chrysalis issued the complete double-album worldwide as a 2-CD set, with the introductions as separate tracks.

In addition to the bonus recordings which have been woven into the original album sequence, the third CD presents Tull's 1978 concert at New York's Madison Square Garden which was first issued as a standalone released in 2009.  The audio has been remixed here by Steven Wilson.

Ian Anderson comments in the press release, "A live extravaganza from the 70s Jethro Tull, this was recorded over several nights in different venues on a portable 8-track tape recorder and transferred to 2" multitrack when I got home after the tours.  I had to listen all through to many shows and pick the best live versions. But much of it was, at least, from the concert in Bern, Switzerland, where dear Claude Nobs came to introduce the band in his inimitable style. Also featuring on this box set collection is the live concert from Madison Square Gardens recorded a few months later and shown live on BBC-TV in the UK. A scary experience for the band as it was, we were told, the first time a live rock concert had been the subject of a live satellite broadcast. The band lineup at this time was a fine-tuned machine and, although missing the unwell John Glascock for the MSG show, it serves as a fine testimony for the many wonderful shows we did in the 70s before general touring fatigue and burn-out began a year or so later.  Enjoy vintage Tull at its 70s best!"

The Inflated Edition of Bursting Out arrives on June 21 from Rhino.  You'll find the track listing and pre-order links below.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

This album came out shortly before my 13th birthday, and Jethro Tull was my favorite (current) band at the time. I bought it on day of release, but - in an admirable show of restraint for a young fanboy - I put off listening to it because I was due to see them a week or so later (my first rock concert!)... but after that, it went into heavy rotation.

That said: even then, I thought the mix sounded kinda weird. I look forward to hearing what Mr. Wilson has done with it. I don't always think his remixes are improvements, but occasionally they are, and in any event I doubt he'll have made this any worse!

Glad I never purchased the original. Love Tull ,but have a few excellent “bootleg “ recordings from this era. This is one I will most definitely purchase!

I'm guessing the remaster 2024 that is describing CD's 1 and 2 along with DVD 1 and 2 is incorrect, and should read remix?
Although it doesn't say, I'm assuming CD3 and DVD 3 are also remixes.

While the "remaster" description was provided by the label, those tracks are indeed the Steven Wilson remixes.

Does anybody know if Claude Nobs was the "Funky Claude" referred to in "Smoke on the Water"?
I had this album on cassette back in the day. I think I may just break down & get this set!

So I will buy this as I am a completest but only 7 unreleased songs? Ian has said in past interviews that this LP was not a candidate for the remaster series? After a long string of amazing releases this is the weakest by far

My favorite JT album is “A Passion Play”. I guess nothing from that release is on this album.

"A Passion Play" didn't stay in their set list for very long. The expanded book set of "Minstrel in the Gallery" includes a 1975 concert where they played a few minutes of "Passion Play"; the same excerpt also appeared on the 25th Anniversary Box Set.

A little off topic, but just curious - and someone please correct me if I'm wrong... This says 'Bursting Out' was the band's first live album. I have a copy of 'Nothing is Easy: Live at the Isle of Wight 1970,' which was released on Eagle Records in 2004 and has liner notes by Ian Anderson. Was this not an officially released live album?

BURSTING OUT was indeed the band's first live album to be released; though NOTHING IS EASY was recorded earlier, it was released much later. BEFORE THE FLOOD, for instance, will always be Bob Dylan's first live album, but dozens of earlier shows have subsequently been released.

To get REALLY technical, the 1972 compilation "Living in the Past" included 20 minutes of live material from a 1970 performance at Carnegie Hall - but that was just one side of a double LP that also included album tracks, single sides, and unreleased studio material. "Bursting Out" was the first ENTIRELY live release, in 1978. A lot more live material from 1969-1982 has since come out on other expanded album book sets since 2015 or so, as well as the occasional compilation.

I wish Jethro Tull would discover blu-ray. Those 3 DVDs would easily fit on a single blu-ray, saving space, reducing price, and being more convenient to enjoy.
