You Don’t Know How Bad I’ve Got It: Cherry Red Preps Nik Kershaw Box Set

An oft-discussed Nik Kershaw box set has been added to Cherry Red’s summer release schedule. The MCA Years, available July 26, offers the most complete look at the British pop/rocker’s career in the ’80s, offering four remastered studio albums, four discs of B-sides and remixes, two discs of mostly unreleased live material and a DVD of music videos and concert material.

The MCA Years comes 40 years on from the release of Kershaw’s earliest work for the label. Born into a musical family in Bristol, England, Kershaw was a self-taught guitarist who rose to prominence with the debut album Human Racing and its breakthrough single “Wouldn’t It Be Good,” a No. 4 hit in England that just missed the Top 40 in America. A reissue of Kershaw’s first single, “I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me,” fared even better at No. 2; perhaps inspired by its lyrical nods, Kershaw became close friends and occasional collaborators with Elton John as the years went on. (You can hear his guitar on the singles “Nikita” and “Act of War.”)

Kershaw followed up Human Racing less than a year later with The Riddle and another string of chart smashes at home: the hypnotic title track (No. 3), “Wide Boy” (No. 9) and “Don Quixote” (No. 10). He was one of many acts who played Wembley Stadium at Live Aid in 1985. Perplexingly, Kershaw rather quickly fell out of favor with chart-watchers. Neither his self-produced Radio Musicola (1986) nor The Works (1989) – an uneasy collaboration with Starship/Wang Chung producer Peter Wolf that was largely reworked with Julian Mendelsohn at the boards – produced any Top 40 hits, and Kershaw largely fell out of the public eye afterward, re-emerging with new material in 1999. (He was active in the intervening decade as a songwriter, penning “The One and Only,” a British chart-topper for Chesney Hawkes.)

Both Human Racing and The Riddle were expanded in the early 2010s by UMC with remixes and live material. The MCA Years includes all of that and more: a dedicated disc of eight non-LP B-sides, a collection of 18 extended 12″ mixes, plus a further nine special single mixes and edits. (A healthy amount of this material is being released on CD for the first time.) The package closes out with the first complete release of a live show recorded by Kershaw at the end of 1984 at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. A dozen of those 20 tracks were included on a video release in 1985, which will be included on the box set’s accompanying DVD along with a baker’s dozen of original music videos. Kershaw has been involved in every step of the project, overseeing Tony Dixon’s new remasters of the material and offering insight into the material in new interviews conducted for the set’s liner notes.

Hey David, we’re checking on this, though if I had to guess based off similar Cherry Red titles like the Howard Jones reissues, we’re probably looking at an NTSC/region-free disc.

        1. Oh boy, I sure hope so, Mike. There’s nothing worse than the lunchbag letdown of finding that the DVD component is unplayable outside of Europe.

          1. Because Europe always considers the NTSC countries with these reissue DVD’s in box sets, the PAL countries permanently are losing picture quality, almost 100 pixels (NTSC delivers 720 x 480 pixels, while PAL delivers 720 x 576 pixels). Enormously frustrating…

  1. Holy nuts!! Been waiting for a set like this from Nik & not surprised Cherry Red is doing it, looks like it will be a brother package to the Kim Wilde box “Pop Don’t Stop”…so far the pre-ordering is not available on Amazon US, but will, and surprised you broke the news first, not SuperDeluxeEdition.com !!

To be fair, the first place I read about it was the Cherry Red site – seemed pretty OK to post about it once it was there.

MIssing a few edits and remixes, I notice.

Fingers crossed they’ve gone to the master tapes for all of the tracks (my gut tells me they haven’t, but we shall see), and haven’t resorted to vinyl rips or mp3 for the bonus material.

Fingers crossed also that they haven’t gone crazy with the compression.

    1. David, the delay brings us also some good news. After absorbing major fan feedback, the label Cherry Red decided to add four single versions to the box set: ‘Nobody Knows’ (Phil Harding Promo Remix), ‘Dancing Girls’ (DJ Edit), ‘Don Quixote’ (Single Edit), and ‘Radio Musicola’ (Single Edit). So I’m actually quite happy with the delay.

      1. Stefano, that’s awesome and certainly does make the extra month worth waiting for, so is there a revised listing anywhere showing these extra tracks?

        Thanks a lot
        David

        1. David, there was a lot of turmoil over the absence of the Phil Harding remix of ‘Nobody Knows’ in particular, so these last minute additions are very welcome. At this point there’s no information where these extras will end up on the box set (on which discs), but they are definitely being added.

          1. Just wonder if anyone can guide me about the 3 LP Vinyl Collected set….is the content or there not too dissimilar to this set?
Looking to add to my collection, but pennies being pennies I don’t want to really stretch to something which might be all covered in this set…..

Any feedback would be really great!

            Thanks again
            David

  3. Does anyone know if this is now definitely shipping on 21st February 2025? It’s seem such a long time since the original September 2024 release date….
