Neil Young and Crazy Horse are currently on the road with the Love Earth Tour, with dates scheduled through September 29, when it all wraps up at the Hollywood Bowl. Today, Young announced that he's looking back on his Early Daze with the Horse on a new collection due June 28. Its ten songs were all recorded in 1969 with the lineup of Danny Whitten (guitar and vocals), Ralph Molina (drums and vocals), Billy Talbot (bass and vocals), and Jack Nitzsche (keyboards, tambourine, and vocals). Early Daze will be released on CD, LP (including standard black vinyl and a clear vinyl variant), and digital platforms. None of the 10 tracks have been previously released on vinyl, and eight are unreleased in any format.
The May 1969 release of Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was Young's second overall album and first collaboration with Crazy Horse. A couple of that LP's songs appear on Early Daze in alternate versions: "Cinnamon Girl" in its long-unavailable mono single mix with a unique guitar outro, and "Down by the River" in a previously unreleased take with different vocals. In addition to the mono "Cinnamon Girl," the only other previously issued song on Early Daze is "Dance Dance Dance" as included on the first volume of Archives. "Dance Dance Dance," "Look at All the Things," and "Come On Baby, Let's Go Downtown" all first appeared on the Horse's 1971 self-titled LP and are featured here in never-before-released versions with Young.
Ralph Molina and Danny Whitten would appear on the recording of "Birds" which Young premiered on 1970's After the Gold Rush; Early Daze includes a previously unheard stereo mix of the single B-side version. "Helpless" ultimately became a highlight of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's Déjà Vu in 1970. "Winterlong" wouldn't receive an airing on a Young album until 1977's Decade anthology, while "Wonderin'" wouldn't appear until 1983 on Neil's rockabilly-style Everybody's Rockin' LP.
A limited edition clear vinyl edition of Early Daze, which includes an exclusive poster, will be exclusively available through the Greedy Hand Store and at independent retailers. Hi-Res digital audio will be available at the Xstream Store through Neil Young Archives. Look for Early Daze on June 28! You'll find the track listing and pre-order links below. While I know at least one person here will complain about this release because Neil Young puts out so many records, I love that he releases a nice variety of easily digestible archival albums, (almost) always with a CD option, and at a reasonable price point. I'm looking forward to this one. I had no idea "Winterlong" dated to the late '60s.

The version of “Birds” that’s on the release is a stereo mix of the previously mono-only 1:38 single B-side. It’s not the 2:34 album take.
According to Neil’s e-mail, it’s:
Birds (Unreleased stereo mix. Mono mix was released as B-side to “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”)

Always excited when a new Neil Archives release gets announced...knew it was a possibility based on this list of potential titles...where does this fall in the archives discography?? #SRS 01?? That slot is open...still waiting on CSNY @ the Fillmore East, the Archives Vol. 3 box, the next ORS box starting with "Harvest Moon" & "Sleeps With Angels" (#ORS 26 thru 29??) & perhaps a Geffen Years set (6CDs from "Trans" thru "Life" with a disc of rarities expanding on those from "Lucky Thirteen"??)...

Then there's the one where he sneezes and blames Graham Nash or the live one where he's doing his weekly shop?
wardo says
This is SRS 01.

Today is the 5th consecutive day that the USA Amazon order link in this article is not working.
Well, the link is "alive", but, it leads to the (Amazon) dead end, full screen message, "sorry we couldn't find that page", along with a picture of a different dog each time. Any idea what is going on? Thanks!
Joe Marchese says
Hi Mike, Unfortunately, Warner Music titles are often notoriously late in populating on Amazon; we apologize for the inconvenience. In a perfect world, the links would be active as soon as the title is announced. Thank you for your patience!
