Turn Back Time: Cher Collects Hits on "Forever," Adds Rarities to Digital Edition

August 1, 2024 By Joe Marchese 19 Comments

Cher Forever

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

On October 19, Cher will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  One month later, on November 19, Cher releases the first volume of her long-awaited autobiography.  The Memoir: Part One will be preceded on September 20 by the superstar's latest hits anthology - her first in nearly two decades.  Forever, featuring 21 newly remastered songs curated by the artist, arrives from Warner Records on 1 CD or 2 LPs (pressed on crystal-clear vinyl).  On the same date, the Forever: Fan Edition arrives digitally with a couple of true rarities that still await physical release.

Forever, sequenced non-chronologically, includes the No. 1 hits "Gypsys, Tramps, and Thieves" (1971), "Dark Lady" (1974), "After All" (1989, AC), "If I Could Turn Back Time" (1990, AC), "Believe" (1998), "Strong Enough" (1999, Dance), "Song for the Lonely" (2002, Dance), "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" (2010, Dance), "Woman's World" (2013, Dance), and "DJ Play a Christmas Song" (2023, AC).  (Of Cher's U.S. chart-toppers, only "Half Breed" is missing.)  That's not all, though.  U.K. chart-topper "(The Shoop Shoop Song) It's In His Kiss" is here, along with the classic ballad "The Way of Love," a pair of ABBA covers ("Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight))" and "S.O.S.," and favorites "Heart of Stone" and "Walking in Memphis."  These have been remastered from the original tapes for this release.

The digital-only Forever Fan Edition adds 19 additional tracks, including Sonny & Cher's No. 1 smash "I Got You Babe" and their top ten hits "The Beat Goes On" and "Baby Don't Go," as well as "Different Kind of Love Song," "Just Like Jesse James," and "Welcome to Burlesque" from the 2010 musical film Burlesque.  "Still" is reprised from Cher's rare, self-released album Not.com.mercial, available only from cher.com in 2000.   Most exciting is the inclusion of two long out-of-print tracks in their first-ever authorized digital appearances.  "A Woman's Story" was produced by Phil Spector in 1973 and released as a 45 on the Warner-Spector label, thunderously arranged by longtime Spector associate Nino Tempo.  (Its B-side, a revival of "Baby, I Love You," and a near-contemporaneous cover of "A Love Like Yours" with Harry Nilsson both await similar reissue.)  Cher has also excavated "I'd Rather Believe in You" from the 1976 Warner Bros. album of the same name and the Gregg Allman disco-lite duet "Move Me" from their 1977 LP Two the Hard Way.  While Cher reissued her Warner Bros. LPs on YouTube, they still haven't reached CD or traditional download/streaming services.

You'll find the track listings and pre-order links for Cher's Forever below.  All formats are due on September 20.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

Why not a 2 cd set. Are we still in the loudness wars where it will be remastered so loud it’s unlistenable?

Agree...should be a 2CD set or even a 3-4 coloured vinyl set...as for the deluxe including rare 70s Warner cuts, and Cher herself posting the 4 70s Warner albums in full on YouTube (and including a song from "Not.Com.Mercial"), could this be Cher having a change of heart regarding these records?? Previously, when she re-signed back to Warners in 1995, she did not want these albums reissued, she wanted em dead & buried...perhaps with age, she may have thought "eff it, put em back out, what the hell"...and digitally, it could be a way to put a big toe in the water, see the feedback... I hope these lost cult Cher albums get reissued, fingers crossed...and both "Not.com.mercial" & the Columbia "I, Paralyze" are good/great albums as well!!

A box set of the Warner albums (and Warner-Spector singles) is long overdue.

I doubt we'll get that lucky considering Cher recently remastered three of her albums that have never been released on CD exclusively for YouTube!

I'd also love a singles boxset like Dead or Alive's Still Spinnin' boxset.

“Of Cher's U.S. chart-toppers, only "Half Breed" is missing” suggesting that the Thought Police have caught up with the oh-so-politically-correct Ms. Bono Allman…

Am wondering why “Take Me Home,” and to a lesser extent, “Bad Love” and “Hell on Wheels” are excluded.

I have always thought of Cher as the Ethel Merman of pop music; loud and bombastic, but fun and impossible to ignore.
One By One may be my favorite Cher song. Her version of Walking In Memphis (May-um-fuss in Cher speak ) is sheer joy.

"One by One" is one of my faves as well...but ONLY the original UK Stephen Lipson produced track from the UK It's A Man's World (which was corrected on the recent US reissue)...NOT the pathetic US remix in 1995 which frankly ruined the song...the original had a Eurythmics flair to it while the US remix was like bad R&B mush...looking at the credits here, I'm afraid the version here is the horrible US remix (saying it was the Reprise single catalogue number, not the UK WEA one like on "Walking in Memphis"...

No conclusive information has been shared yet as to which version of each song has been used, so there's still hope yet. The discographical annotation we've provided is for general reference only.

          Hi, Joe --

Thank you, as always. Is it some sort of a rights issue that nothing will be included from Cher's time with Casablanca?

"Take Me Home," which would have been licensed from Universal (Casablanca's current owner), is happily on the physical set.

While I'm no representative for Cher, Warner Records, or Rhino, her A&R guy, Dion Singer, commented on some of his Instagram posts with answers to fan questions.

First I will share what he shared in one post - and then questions and answers from the comments of various posts. It's very interesting that this has taken 7 years to put together - what an ordeal! Also, that remastered "Living Proof" LP was done so that the tracks that are featured in this collection from that album would be remastered. If you have Instagram, He's worth a follow at http://instagram.com/dionsinger because he gives so much inside information about a LOT of things about her catalog.

"I’m going to answer a few questions here -

This is the first LP Hits package since 1992!

Its a 2LP set to keep the price sensible for “new fans” and in all places all over the world 🙂

The Forever Fans version has 5 or 6 songs that have NEVER been available on streaming services

Stephen has remastered all the songs from the best sources we could get! You will LOVE the sound. The Way Of Love is BREATHTAKING. Bang Bang is glorious !! Move Me has never sounded better!

Half-Breed is not on the record. We know and had many discussions about it. It’s a word that is terrible and has not aged well.

It’s hard to please everyone - but with today’s technology you can make any version you like with your phone 🙂

    And guess what?

When you buy the CD or Vinyl - you know you get the 'single edit' of Take Me Home … but on the Digital Services - you hear the 6:40 Album Version in ALL ITS GLORY. Isn’t technology wonderful ?

La la la laaaaaaaa and so much more to come for ALL THE FANS in 2025 / 2026 …. FOREVER

Love to everyone who loves Our Icon 🙂

Is it September 20th yet ???? HURRY UP !!!!

Listen to 'A Woman’s Story' NOW!"

Q: "Amazing 🔥🔥🔥 already preordered all the variants (minus the Barnes&Noble, sadly they don't ship in Europe, which is a shame because for hardcore fans like me, missing one cool variant is always heartbreaking 🥲"
A: " I understand. But the retailers are really hard on us. We gave the European fans the RED vinyl. (Which is actually her favourite colour of the variants). What must we do ? Not get it in the stores ? Sadly they have the power here …. And I want the fans to have choices !"

Q: " have to ask about “I Still Haven’t Found” and if it’s farewell version or the unreleased studio version? Hearing a snippet of it in the Cannes remix was to die for!"
A: " it’s the love from the farewell tour is that one is a Warner master. And yes. We would like to do it on vinyl. But this needed to get done first !"

Q: "A Woman’s Story sounds glorious. Any chance of getting Baby, I Love You and A Love Like Yours remastered and available on digital."
A: "on the list it goes :)"

Q: "Dion thank you for the hard work. My question is can we have the missing videos on youtube. They all dont have to be 4k i think the fans will appreciate it. Welcome to burlesque, you haven’t seen the last, music no good, alive again, one by one even if its the dvd rip. Her videography is worthy in any quality thank you from PUERTO RICO"
A: "well aware and there is a lot to do. As said in other comments 4k is not possible for all videos. Especially those made on video tape"

Q: "Thank you! Still wishing for not.com.mercial official release though..."
A: "I know!! But I got you STILL !!!!! Step by step 😍🔥"

Q: "The digital version looks great but why on Earth is that not being released as double CD? Many fans are not interested on digtal and a single CD is not nearly enough for a Cher best of!"
A: "because the legal issues and costs were crazy. We will look at it again. By the way. Just so you are aware. On Apple. The songs are 24 bit. And much higher resolution than a CD. And while I know lots like CDs. We did what we could. The mass market retailers wanted one CD and we are limited to 79 minutes. Stick with me here :). Thanks for being a fan. This has taken us 7 years"

Q: "Dion, it would be possible to have 4K remasters of the clips directly from the reels?"
A: "yes and no. Not all videos are controlled by warner. Some can’t be done in 4k cause they on video! But we are always looking into these things. It costs a fortune ! I never did one by one cause the video tape wasn’t in great condition and we thought it looked cheap. And we never want to disappoint you guys!"

Q: "Will the red vinyl be available in the USA ?"
    A: "working on it"

Q: "is still havent found a live or studio version!?"
A: "live version. That’s the one Warner controls. And I had to be careful as was only allowed to choose a certain number of universal songs"

Q: "Wait so are the Living Proof songs getting remastered again since Cher just released a Living Proof Remastered album 😭"
A: "totally aware. There is so much to come. I know. I know. We are trying to help and please you all !!! hold your fire. The new living proof was remastered because of this record !!"
Q: "ohh! makes so much sense so the Living Proof songs on this new record are the same remastered songs from the Living Proof 2024 album? that’s what i meant to say😭"
A: "ooooo I see 😍. I’m sorry. Don’t worry. We are always trying to save your pockets and make you guys happy !"

Q: "was there an issue getting All I Really Wanna Do on the release?"
A: "I could only ask Universal for a set amount of songs"

Q: "It does not seem far that people buying the physical formats end up with much less content. How about releasing a Part 2 next year with the rest of the tracks from the digital version? That would keep everyone happy."
A: "oh yes. I know. But I was told by far more powerful people that I had to keep the price low for mass market. I will try and get this for you. Let’s get through Christmas first 😁🤪😂⭐️"

Q: "will Dov’e L’amore be the original mix or a remix?"
    A: "original album version"

Q: "Bang Bang deserved but with a 50+ year career there's no way to include them all."
A: "absolutely. Thanks for understanding. Ps. The remastered bang bang is from the best mono version. It sounds amazing!"

Q: "Is the Junior remix edit of One By One ??"
    A: "no. Album version"

Q: "How did y’all decide what to include? Also any specific reason it is not chronological?"
A: "it’s was years and years. Truly. And I will never ever do chronological. Firstly you can’t license everything - And it’s boring It must run like a lovely radio show. Concerts are not chronological …. And sometimes it can start to sound old / or boring /. Or this period there were no hits It must always be a great listen and a great journey. Of course now you can do it all yourself and have your own! But the biggest greatest hits albums of all time. ABBA Gold. Queen Etc. None are. Tjrnare celebtstion listens. It’s to make something that new and classic fans love. Is it more fun to read a great book … or the dictionary ? I love ABBA Greatest Hits Vol 2. Then George Benson Collection. Madonna Celebration . Packages that sold tens of millions. . Etc. My philosophy is to go on a journey for all. Not to be an academic chart book. It makes the listen hard If that long explanation makes sense :)"

Q: "Take Me Home (12" mix) will be great on Very Best 😍"
A: "I know …. But you can only fit so much on a CD 🙂 Next year we look at a vinyl reissue hopefully But I don’t know yet …"

Q: "Dion I have an acetate of this album [Take Me Home] that has an unreleased song and alternate vocals and orchestrations. Will these be included on this release? 😍"
A: "I seriously doubt it. If something has not been released there is always a reason …. And I’m aware that certain things leak are put out there …. But take it from me….. it certainly does not please The Artist …. And I understand that totally …. It’s so disrespectful to me (in my experience) A couple of weeks ago some smart person released a version of “everyday people”? Hope that person never mentions it was them in a meet and greet 😝"

Cher has said she isn't a Cher fan. So maybe she isn't the best one to compile a set like this. Back in 2000 I made a double CD that several friends wanted copies of. I called it "The Cher Anthology 1963-2000"

    Disc one:
    Ringo I Love You
    Baby Don't Go (with Sonny)
I Got You Babe (with Sonny)
All I Really Want To Do
    Needles & Pins
The Beat Goes On (with Sonny)
    You Better Sit Down Kids
    Good Combination (with Sonny)
    I Walk On Gilded Splinters
    Superstar
    The Way Of Love
    Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves
    He'll Never Know
    Fire & Rain
He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother
    Living In A House Divided
A Cowboys Work Is Never Done (with Sonny)
    Half Breed
The Greatest Song I Ever Heard
    Dark Lady
    Just One More Time
    Geronimo's Cadillac
    Spring

    Disc Two:
When Will I Be Loved (Live)
    Pirate
    War Paint & Soft Feathers
Can You Fool (with Gregg Allman)
    Island
    Love And Pain
    My Song (Too Far Gone)
    We All Fly Home
    When The Love Is Gone
    I Found Someone
If I Could Turn Back Time
    Just Like Jesse James
    Could've Been You
    Angels Running
    Tougher Than The Rest (Live)
    Believe
Crimson & Clover (with Elijah Blue)
    Still
Proud Mary (Live with Tina Turner)
