Back to the Basics Chips Moman Songbook

Ace Records has had quite a 2021, from collections spotlighting the songs of Lou Reed and Donovan through this past week's releases from Petula Clark, late producer Norman Whitfield, and the ladies of Motown.  Today, we're taking a look at a pair of recent releases from the venerable label. Lincoln Wayne "Chips" Moman (1937-2016) may never have become a household name, but the music he helped create certainly did. A guitarist, producer, songwriter, and engineer, Moman pioneered the sound of

Peter Cetera Love Glory Honor and Heart

UPDATED 1/22: As one of the seven members of Chicago as featured on their 1969 debut album Chicago Transit Authority, bassist-singer Peter Cetera's soaring tenor became an integral component of the band's sound on such hits as "25 or 6 to 4," "Feelin' Stronger Every Day," "Just You 'n' Me," and "(I've Been) Searching So Long."  When his own composition "If You Leave Me Now" became Chicago's first-ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 - not to mention in international territories such as Canada,

Cher 3614 Jackson Highway

Cher's album 3614 Jackson Highway arrived midway through 1969 as the singer and her partner Sonny Bono worked furiously to re-establish themselves in a changing musical landscape and escape from mounting debt. Their first child had been born in March, a Sonny and Cher single arrived in May and was quickly followed by a Cher solo 45, and her film Chastity hit theatres in June. Sonny and Cher hadn't had a major hit single since 1967's "The Beat Goes On" and the solo Cher hadn't had a chart entry

Cover Me Eddie Hinton

As a member of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Eddie Hinton played on countless recordings by the likes of Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, and Otis Redding.  But there was another side of the guitarist that led Jerry Wexler to once proclaim him "the next big thing."  Hinton was a persuasive performer and moreover, a fine songwriter.  In collaboration with Donnie Fritts, he penned what's likely his most famous song: "Breakfast in Bed," first recorded by Baby Washington but made

Cher 3614 Jackson Highway

2018 was a great year for Cher, with a starring role in the blockbuster Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the release of her hit album Dancing Queen, the opening of Broadway bio-musical The Cher Show, the reissue on vinyl of the smash Believe album, and a prestigious Kennedy Center Honor.  2019 looks to be shaping up as another banner year for the consummate entertainer.  Run Out Groove has just announced that the expanded edition of Cher's 3614 Jackson Highway, first issued on a Rhino Handmade CD in

Listen People Graham Gouldman Songbook

Ace's latest addition to its Songwriter Series, Listen People: The Graham Gouldman Songbook 1964-2005, appropriately enough begins with a track written by Gouldman, "That's How (It's Gonna Stay)."  But the track is also significant in that it was performed by Gouldman, as well - as part of his early group The Mockingbirds.  Throughout his career, he's worn many hats - as a songwriter, as a band member, as a solo artist - and all of them are touched upon on this fine celebration of a largely

Cher I Paralyze

I Paralyze, the seventeenth studio album from the one and only Cher, had all of the earmarks of a hit album.  Her first and only LP for Columbia Records, it boasted a line-up of heavy hitters including producer-songwriters John Farrar (a string of Olivia Newton-John's most beloved hits including "Magic," "Have You Never Been Mellow," and "Hopelessly Devoted to You") and David Wolfert (whose credits include Melissa Manchester, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand and Dusty Springfield), songwriter
