As we get closer to the time when there's a chill in the air and a penchant for "spooky season," Duran Duran are getting back into the spirit with an expanded version of their last album, meant to celebrate all things strange and unusual.
2023's Danse Macabre came just two years after the release of Future Past in 2021 - the shortest gap between new LPs from the band since the mid-'90s. The band were certainly riding high: Future Past was a celebration of what made the Birmingham group so beloved 40 years on from their debut, featuring collaborations with Mark Ronson, Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, David Bowie keyboardist Mike Garson and even electro-producer extraordinaire Giorgio Moroder. After another successful world tour in 2022, fans' hopes were finally answered when the group - singer Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, drummer Roger Taylor and former guitarists Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo - were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for their contributions to New Wave and the changing sound of rock at the birth of the MTV generation.
The genesis of Danse Macabre was a unique set performed on October 31, 2022 at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas. The group dug deep into their catalogue, playing atmospheric favorites like "Night Boat," "Love Voodoo" and the rare B-side "Secret Oktober." They also played a brace of covers that, unbeknownst to the audience, would make their way onto Danse Macabre: The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer," Siouxsie and The Banshees' "Spellbound," and even a fascinating version of Rick James' "Super Freak" paired with the Rio standout "Lonely in Your Nightmare." Along with these covers and reworks, the group wrote several new tracks for Danse Macabre, including the title track and "Black Moonlight," a reunion with CHIC guitarist Nile Rodgers, a longtime friend and collaborator since his chart-topping remix of "The Reflex" in 1984.
But the group had two more surprises in store for the faithful. First, most of the album featured guitar tracks from the Fab Five's best-known guitarist, Andy Taylor. (Taylor planned to attend the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, but ultimately announced, in a letter read at the induction by Le Bon, that he had suffered a health setback in his previously-undisclosed battle with stage IV metastatic prostate cancer. The guitarist has responded well to experimental treatments, adding considerable time to his life expectancy, and released a new solo album not long after Danse Macabre hit stores.) And on two tracks where he did not appear - "Danse Macabre" and the re-recording of 1993 deep cut "Love Voudou" - guitar duties were carried out by Taylor's replacement, ex-Missing Persons axe man (and "Love Voudou" co-writer) Warren Cuccurullo. It was his first time on a Duran album since 2000's Pop Trash.
Now, ahead of some special, thematic tour dates - including a show on Halloween night at Madison Square Garden in New York City - the group will reissue Danse Macabre on CD and digitally with three new recordings: an original instrumental, "Masque of the Pink Death," that now opens the album; a cover of Electric Light Orchestra's "Evil Woman"; and "New Moon (Dark Phase)," a re-recording of the band's 1984 Top 10 hit "New Moon on Monday" featuring new contributions by Andy Taylor. Additionally, a triple vinyl box set will include four more unreleased tracks along with extras like art prints, a special booklet, tarot cards and even a "spirit board" with metal planchette to encourage a visitation of your own.
The Danse Macabre: De Luxe CD and digital album will be available October 11. The vinyl will be start shipping October 25 from the band's official web store, where it appears to be out of stock as of this writing; however, the press release indicates it will be available at "select U.S. retailers" on November 29. Thanks for the heads up about the Halloween gig at MSG...scored a ticket!! Ordered the CD and also, there is a now-sold-out BluRay Audio from SuperDeluxeEdition.com of this expanded edition with video content as well...as for the vinyl boxset, perhaps they will have some for sale at the merch booth/table at the gig...it's sold out on the website...if not, will see which select retailer is selling it?? Hopefully Amazon or Newbury Comics or Rough Trade...new version of "New Moon (Dark Phase)" is great, a bit lusher than the 1983 original but aged like fine wine...the Halloween gig is going to be big fun...
