Legacy Recordings has prepped an eclectic state of mostly classic rock and hip-hop titles to be released on vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday. The long-running spinoff event to the big April bonanza takes place November 29 at participating independent outlets - and below is an alphabetical look at what Sony Music's catalog arm will be releasing.
More than 50 years after her tragic passing, singer Janis Joplin continues to find new fans - and Legacy's first Black Friday title highlights her power in concert as the frontwoman of Big Brother & The Holding Company. Live At the Grande Ballroom, Detroit, Michigan - March 2, 1968 features a powerful set from the group that predates by only a few days their christening performance at the brand new Fillmore East in New York City. (A version of "Ball and Chain" from that set appeared on the group's second and final album with Joplin, Cheap Thrills, released that summer.) This eight-track LP, pressed on black vinyl and limited to 3500 copies, features versions of Cheap Thrills favorites "Piece of My Heart," "Ball and Chain" and "Combination of the Two," plus renditions of "Catch Me Daddy" and "Magic of Love" that were later released on a 1999 CD reissue of the album.
A hip-hop classic getting a vinyl pressing from Legacy is by New York conscious rap duo dead prez, whose RBG: Revolutionary But Gangsta will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a red opaque vinyl pressing (a single album, where the original vinyl release was a double). M-1 and stic.man went deep on this album, spitting verses about the various ways and means of Black liberation in America, complete with guest verses from Krayzie Bone of Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony ("Walk Like a Warrior") and Jay-Z (a remix of "Hell Yeah (Pimp the System)" that closes the album). This disc is limited to 2500 copies.
Though this year's larger Jimi Hendrix archival title is a box set from his brief time at his Electric Lady Studios, the Hendrix estate has prepped a belated LP highlighting tracks from their 2019 box set Songs for Groovy Children: The Fillmore East Concerts, which showcased his concerts with burgeoning ensemble Band of Gypsys (himself, bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles). The four sets, recorded on New Year's Eve 1969 and New Year's Day 1970, formed the basis for that year's Band of Gypsys album, and this release - mastered by Bernie Grundman, limited to 4500 copies and pressed on blue and violet swirl vinyl - offers five tracks from that box, three of which were performed on that first New Year's Eve set.
The only RSD title from Legacy tied to a new release on their schedule - and the only one that's an "RSD First" title instead of an outright exclusive - comes from Whitney Houston. Love Is (Live from South Africa and More) is a 12" single drawn from the forthcoming The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban), available November 8. It's loaded with tracks: four cuts from the live South African set (only one of which, "Love Is," is on either physical edition of the album; the other three are only available digitally), and four versions of vault recording "Love Is" (the new studio mix included on the South African concert CD, a remix by Carvin Winans available only on the digital album, and a further a cappella mix and live rehearsal that, it seems, will only be available here). 2000 copies will be made available for Black Friday.
Two decades after the release of Lamb of God's major-label debut and crowning metal opus Ashes of the Wake, the band will partner with Legacy for Ashes of the Wake Live, a double vinyl performance of the album that was originally livestreamed from the band's hometown of Richmond, Virginia during COVID-19 lockdown in the fall of 2020. (A show from a week earlier featured a full-performance of their self-titled album, released that summer.) This release, limited to 4400 copies, features the set on three sides of vinyl, with an etching on the fourth side.
Five years ago, dance-pop fans had the opportunity to take some LSD: a supergroup featuring British rapper/producer Labrinth, Australian pop singer/songwriter Sia and U.S. dance producer Diplo. LSD (The Remixes) offers 10 alternate versions of tracks from their self-titled 2019 album on purple vinyl, including a mix of lead single "Genius" with a guest verse from rapper Lil Wayne. This collection will be limited to 2000 copies.
One of Legacy's genuine RSD rarities is a vinyl debut of the exceptionally rare Baron Von Bullshit Rides Again, a 2004 live album by alt-rockers Modest Mouse. Issued in the wake of their album Good News for People Who Love Bad News, which featured the crossover hit "Float On," this set was drawn from two dates in Orlando just ahead of the album's release, and was released on CD in extremely limited quantities. Though it was belatedly given a digital release some years later, this is its first appearance on a disc in 20 years, and the first ever on vinyl. 3500 copies will be pressed.
Perhaps one of the most unusual RSD titles from Legacy is a repeat of an RSD release from six years ago. Rage Against the Machine's Democratic National Convention 2000, an EP featuring a scathing protest set from outside the Staples Center (where that year's nomination of Al Gore for Democratic presidential candidate was taking place), was part of the label's offering for Record Store Day in 2018, some 15 years after the concert footage was issued on DVD. Astoundingly, in the time since that original vinyl release, the band announced a second reunion tour that was cancelled once in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour restarted briefly in July and August 2022, then cancelled again after frontman Zack de la Rocha sustained a leg injury. The group has since dissolved a third time, but that DNC set lives once more - this time pressed on 180-gram, "window pane clear" vinyl capped at 4000 copies (just a thousand less than last time).
Legacy's final RSD title is another hip-hop release: the vinyl debut of Shmurda She Wrote, the EP that introduced the game to Brooklyn drill pioneer Bobby Shmurda. Anchored by the Top 10 hit "Hot N****," the EP had only been out for about a month when Shmurda was arrested and charged with felony possession; he took a plea deal in 2016 and was behind bars until 2021, working to restart his musical career since then. This translucent red release will stand to remind fans of his talent, 2000 copies strong.
But that's not all for Legacy and hip-hop excellence on vinyl for Record Store Day. Sony Music is also licensing four vinyl reissues for the Get On Down label. The 1994, Erick Sermon-produced debut album from Keith Murray, The Most Beautifullest Thing in the World, will be reissued on ultra-clear, opaque bluejay and metallic silver splatter vinyl for its 30th anniversary - a 2LP set with a fourth side of 12" mixes and B-sides. Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon's sophomore solo album, Immobilarity, will also get a 25th anniversary pressing on a unique "galaxy effect" double vinyl offering. West Coast quartet Souls of Mischief will see their sophomore album, 1995's No Man's Land, pressed on "Tide pod" colored double vinyl (its first release on the format in America), and West Coast survivor Too $hort's ninth album, 1995's Cocktails, will also get a U.S. vinyl debut, spinning on ultra-clear "color in color" vinyl with tangerine on one disc and bluejay on the other. All these titles will be packaged in their own unique gatefold sleeves with an obi strip; each is limited to just 1500 copies, except Immobilarity, which tops out at 2200.
All these titles will be available from participating independent retailers on Record Store Day Black Friday (November 29).
