Following our round-up of soundtrack reissues from September, here's a look at all the great CD and vinyl expansions and re-releases film score fans can expect from this month - and even a few in the next few weeks. From James Bond to RoboCop, there's something here for just about anyone.
Everything La-La Land Records touches turns to excitement! After the surprise expansions of Bond flicks Live and Let Die and Octopussy that kicked off the calendar year, the label has stuck again with a special 60th anniversary reissue of the soundtrack to the series' third installment, 1964's Goldfinger. With Sean Connery confidently back in the role of Ian Fleming's secret agent, Goldfinger is perhaps the film that perfected the still-ongoing film series' formula. It featured exotic locales, biting humor, an iconic sports car (the gadget-laden Aston Martin DB5) - and, for the first time, a pop theme song over the stylized opening title sequence. (Matt Monro's theme to predecessor From Russia with Love (1963) played over that film's end credits.) Here, series composer John Barry, with lyrical assistance from Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, created a title song for Shirley Bassey to belt; it became a Top 10 hit in America, while the soundtrack album topped the Billboard pop charts as well. The label's single-disc reissue, produced by Neil S. Bulk with restoration efforts by Chris Malone, mastering by Doug Schwartz and a package designed by Dan Goldwasser (with notes by esteemed film music writer Jon Burlingame), resequences all 15 tracks from the original U.S. and U.K. pressings and adds two bonus tracks: Newley's recording of "Goldfinger," and a rare mono version of Bassey's (which features an alternate vocal). It's limited to 5000 copies, which can be ordered for the first 90 days of its release (from October 1) exclusively from La-La Land's official store or the 007 storefront.
Intrada has put three great scores out on two titles - including an expansion of a favorite in their catalogue and a premiere from a modern-day favorite composer. First up is a new pressing of the label's 2010 two-fer of Laurence Rosenthal's scores to A Raisin in the Sun and Requiem for a Heavyweight. These two were among Rosenthal's earliest and most-beloved works for film - one a stirring adaptation of Lorraine Hansberry's acclaimed play starring Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee as determined heads of a Black family in Chicago, and the other a feature-length adaptation of an acclaimed Playhouse 90 television feature (a breakthrough script from Rod Serling) featuring Anthony Quinn as an aging boxer and Jackie Gleason as his beleaguered manager. (Early in the picture, Quinn's character fights a real-life boxer on the rise, then known as Cassius Clay and later called Muhammad Ali, arguably the world's most notable athlete.) The Heavyweight program, originally sourced from Rosenthal's personal 1/4" master tapes, has now been expanded with music from original film stems in the Columbia Pictures vault; the Raisin score retains the same track list as before. John Takis writes liner notes for the collection.
Also coming from Intrada is a world premiere of Carter Burwell's score to the 1996 teen thriller Fear. A sort of gender-flipped Fatal Attraction, this sleeper hit was notable primarily for its rising leads: Reese Witherspoon as a young, wealthy teenager who gets more than she bargained for when she dates a dashing but unstable young man portrayed by rapper-turned-actor Mark Wahlberg. Burwell, known for his collaborations with the Coen brothers, was praised for his suspenseful score, brilliantly orchestrated and conducted by the late Shirley Walker (who performed similar duties in the late '80s and early '90s for Danny Elfman, notably 1989's Batman). For the first time, it's being released - newly mixed by Michael Farrow and mastered by Chris Malone.
An intriguing score reissue for general retailers is due from Varese Sarabande on November 15: in honor of the 25th anniversary of the 1999 sensation The Matrix, Don Davis' score to the Wachowski's original genre-bending blockbuster is getting reissued on CD and vinyl. Targeted more to the general listener or casual fan, this single-disc presentation - following a 2006 expansion and subsequent complete release in 2021 - features new artwork by Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu and a specially-curated track list selected by the composer. The main vinyl, naturally, will be a "cyber swirl" black and green color scheme, matching the art. (A "blue pill" variant will be carried exclusively by Barnes & Noble.)
Varese is also reviving its "Encore" series, putting out-of-print, fan-favorite standard and deluxe titles back into circulation. Their first under this banner is the score to 1993's RoboCop 3. Though the final installment of the series was a marked departure from its predecessors - lacking the social satire, excessive violence and much of the cast of the first two films (Robert John Burke replaced Peter Weller as the heroic cyborg, and his partner, played by Nancy Allen, was killed off partway through the story) - the film did feature the return of original composer Basil Poledouris, who in turn reprised many of the stirring themes from the 1987 film in this new feature. Expanded for Varese's CD club in 2016, it's now back in print as it was then; for the first time, it will also make its vinyl debut as a 2LP set in early 2025, pressed on "Delta City" yellow wax and featuring new artwork by illustrator Estevan Silveira.

Was ready to pop the $39 for the Goldfinger restoration--even though that's a lot of money--and then I saw that on top of that, they want TWENTY DOLLARS FOR SHIPPING. Which is utterly ridiculous. And which raises the real price to $59 before sales tax. Nope.
Joe Marchese says
Hi Ted, did you try ordering directly through La-La Land rather than the 007 store? I paid $21.98 plus $4.95 domestic shipping for GOLDFINGER from LLL; it's available directly at the link in our article.
Ted says
There is a clickable link for the 007 Store in Mike's post, which I assumed was a subset of the La La Land site especially for 007 stuff. Am happy to know I was wrong. Will order direct from La La Land. Which raises the question, where does the 007 Store get off charging $60 for the Goldfinger disc (delivered) when La La Land is selling it for $27 (delivered)???
