Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts! A great Carly Simon deep cut gets a fresh mix, plus Phil Collins in concert and new music from The Stylistics.
Carly Simon, "Share the End" (2025 Remaster) (Elektra/Rhino) (iTunes / Amazon)
Though merely billed as a remaster in the metadata, this upbeat, heartbreaking side-two opener to Simon's sophomore album Anticipation has been newly remixed. It's a dramatic revisit of a song that resonates still, and hopefully a portent of more catalogue activity from the little-seen Simon, now 81 years old. "In the original, I was reflecting on personal relationships, but in this version, I'm thinking more about what's happening everywhere in the world--how to move forward while treasuring what's behind us," Simon said in a statement accompanying the release. "Working with Paul [Samwell-Smith, the song's producer], Peter [Vettese, session keyboardist and later a member of Jethro Tull], and Frank [Filipetti, mix engineer] brought out a layered, almost cinematic quality to the song that feels like a natural progression of its story."
Phil Collins, Live from the Board - Official Bootleg (Craft/Rhino) (iTunes / Amazon)
After a Record Store Day vinyl release and months of track-by-track rollout, this 1995 concert EP is now available in full, featuring Collins and his band working through versions of "Sussudio," "Easy Lover," "Separate Lives" and a cover of The Temptations' "My Girl."
Tatyana Ali, Boy You Knock Me Out EP (MJJ/Epic) (iTunes / Amazon)
Best known at the time as the youngest member of the cast of the hit NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Tatyana Ali put an eventual enrollment at Harvard on hold to briefly spread her wings as a singer on 1998's Kiss the Sky, released on Michael Jackson's MJJ imprint. Debut single "Daydreamin'" was a Top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, but the Bobby Caldwell-sampling follow-up "Boy You Knock Me Out," which didn't chart in America, was an even bigger hit in the U.K., reaching No. 3. That might've had something to do with the guest rap by her Fresh Prince co-star Will Smith, who by then was a well-established rapper-turned-actor with starring roles in the summer blockbusters Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1997) - or perhaps it was the array of remixes by StoneBridge and Maurice Joshua, featured here.
The Stylistics, Falling in Love with My Girl (Greatest Music of All Time LLC) (iTunes / Amazon)
Though Airrion Love and Herb Murrell of The Stylistics parted ways long ago with original lead singer Russell Thompkins, Jr., the duo have continued to make music under the Stylistics moniker. This weekend, Love and Murrell have released their most high-profile release since the split with Thompkins. Falling in Love with My Girl welcomes a host of special guests including Shania Twain, Ronnie Wood, Gene Simmons, Bill Champlin, Billy F. Gibbons, Ray Parker Jr., Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olsson, Steve Lukather, Tower of Power, Jay Graydon, Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, Nathan East, and others. Jason Sharp, with The Stylistics since 2011, sings lead vocals. The double album of original material, produced by Tom Cridland, is streaming now and available on CD in Europe; the U.S. CD arrives on March 21.
There's even more where that came from! Check out some other great releases below.
Larry Coryell, European Impressions (Arista) (iTunes / Amazon)
