Long Distance Love Affair: Sheena Easton Box Set Offers 25 Unreleased Tracks

March 20, 2025 By Mike Duquette 4 Comments

Sheena Easton Modern Girl

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.CO.UK

Sheena Easton's latest reissue collaboration with Cherry Red covers familiar ground in a slightly new way. Modern Girl: The Complete EMI Recordings, Vol. 1 is a 5CD set that will cover the bulk of the Scottish singer's first five albums - Take My Time (1981), You Could Have Been with Me (1981), Madness, Money and Music (1982), Best Kept Secret (1983) and the Spanish-language hits album Todo Me Recuerda a Ti (1984) - while also premiering more than two dozen unreleased tracks. The set, available May 23, is entirely remastered from the original analogue tapes and also features a 48-page booklet with insights from key collaborators who sat for new interviews, including producers Christopher Neil, Jay Graydon and Greg Mathieson. Easton herself also pens an introduction to the booklet.

Labelling Modern Girl as an offering of "recordings" instead of "albums" makes for some unique presentational quirks. The first disc, for instance - devoted to Take My Time - includes the 17 known tracks from that album's sessions, which were released on the original LP, single B-sides, and even an outtake from a previous reissue of the album, not in typical album-and-single order but a more curatorial experience. It's rounded out with five unreleased alternate versions, including unheard takes on breakthrough hit "Morning Train (9 to 5)" and the James Bond theme "For Your Eyes Only." Other albums are presented in their original order, though Madness, Money and Music swaps out three unreleased alternate versions and mixes in place of some original album tracks. Other highlights include portions of a live set at the Hollywood Palace (originally released on laserdisc and later an expanded CD/DVD from Cherry Red in 2022), a set of unissued live takes from the TV special Act One (including a duet with Al Jarreau and a cover of Billy Joel's "The Entertainer"), seven alternates from Best Kept Secret loosed from the vaults, and Easton's hit duet version of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" with country star Kenny Rogers, which never appeared on one of her studio albums.

Modern Girl looks to be an intriguing way of extending the British label's longtime association with Easton (a CD edition of 1988's The Lover in Me was the second release on Cherry Red's Cherry Pop imprint in 2006). Beginning with 2021's The Definitive Singles 1980-1987, they've covered Easton's EMI era in exhaustive detail, with CD/DVD and/or vinyl editions of Take My Time, You Could Have Been with Me, Live At The Palace, Hollywood, Madness, Money and Music, Best Kept Secret and the later albums A Private Heaven (1984), Do You (1985) and No Sound But a Heart (1987) as well as select compilations. Though Easton hasn't released a new album since 2000 and performs only sporadically, the Best New Artist Grammy winner and '80s chart stalwart remains a musical figure with a beloved fan base, who have the chance to dive into the first era of her work on Modern Girl: The Complete EMI Recordings, Vol. 1.

Mike Duquette

Mike Duquette (Founder) was fascinated with catalog music ever since he was a teenager. A 2009 graduate of Seton Hall University with a B.A. in journalism, Mike paired his profession with his passion through The Second Disc, one of the first sites to focus on all reissue labels great and small. His passion for reissues turned into a career, holding positions at Legacy Recordings and Rhino Records and contributing to Allmusic, Discogs, City Pages, Ultimate Classic Rock and Mondo Records, for whom he penned liner notes for his favorite piece of music: John Williams' Oscar-winning score to 'E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.' Born and raised in New Jersey, Mike lives in Astoria, Queens with his wife, a cat named Ravioli, twin daughters and a large yet tasteful collection of music.

Sheena Easton is Scottish, not Australian. Perhaps Mike Duquette is obsessing over Kylie Minogue again.

Sheena is Scottish not Australian...next, was toying with whether i should go for the recent deluxe album remasters or go for this box & future volumes...my choice is this box, for value & compactness, although the question is if there are important tracks not carried over to the new box from the recent reissues?? I do have the 3CD EMI singles set as well...curious if future volumes will cross over into the MCA era & beyond?? I do have to admit, even though i grew up with her stuff all over US Top 40 radio as a kid in the 80s, for me she is only a guilty pleasure cuz not a songwriter & mainstream pop & AC, not "cooler" or critically acclaimed records...great voice tho...

Boy, that swapping in of alternate versions in place of original versions really burns my…

But, hey, it does keep the catalog alive, now, don’t it?
