The Weekend Stream: May 17, 2025

May 17, 2025 By The Second Disc 2 Comments

Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. A positively packed volume offers legends of pop, rock and country revisiting and interpreting some classic tracks; catalogue favorites from Britney to Sheena and Connie to Katrina; intriguing film scores and show tunes; and remembrances of a few legends we lost this week.

Steve Perry & Willie Nelson, "Faithfully" (Dark Horse) (Apple / Amazon)

One of rock's most recognizable voices joins forces with country's most enduring living icon! Former Journey singer Steve Perry takes on a version of his old band's ballad "Faithfully" alongside Willie Nelson (fresh off his Rodney Crowell tribute album Oh What a Beautiful World). A portion of the proceeds will go to Farm Aid, the benefit concert series Nelson helped co-found in 1985. (Willie will play alongside John Mellencamp and Neil Young this fall in Minneapolis to celebrate Farm Aid's 40th anniversary.)

Barbra Streisand & Paul McCartney, "My Valentine" (Columbia) (Apple / Amazon)

Two legends shared the studio for the very first time on this duet of Paul McCartney's touching love ballad, originally the centerpiece of his 2012 album Kisses on the Bottom. Written for Macca's now-wife Nancy Shevell, "My Valentine" finds new depth as recorded by two of the most legendary voices of our time. It's the second track to be released from Barbra Streisand's latest studio album, next month's The Secret of Life: Partners, Volume 2.

Foreigner & Joy, "Quiero saber si es mi amor" (Rhino) (Apple / Amazon)

The current line-up of Foreigner have another Spanish-language version of a classic hit; this time, it's 1984's immortal power ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is," featuring guest vocals from Joy Huerta of Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy. (Huerta was also recently featured in the Stream for her work on the musical Real Women Have Curves.)

The Hooters, "Pendulum" (Hooters Music) (Apple / Amazon)

Last week, The Hooters released the rollicking folk-pop single "Pendulum," their first new material since 2023's Rocking & Swing. We highlight it this weekend to wish the band luck as they take the stage tonight at The Met in their native Philadelphia, the opening salvo of a planned 45th anniversary celebration, along with 40 years since their biggest hit, "And We Danced," and a huge hometown performance at the Live Aid festival that same year. (Mike is finally crossing the band off his concert bucket list!)

Britney Spears, Oops!... I Did It Again / Lucky / Stronger / Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know EPs (Jive)

Oops!: Apple / Amazon
Lucky: Apple / Amazon
Stronger: Apple / Amazon
Don't Let Me Be: Apple / Amazon

With the new 25th anniversary edition of Britney Spears' sophomore album Oops!... I Did It Again on vinyl and digitally available today, Legacy Recordings has also made more than three hours' worth of vintage remixes of the album's four singles available to stream or download, too.

Sheena Easton, Do You (The Uncut Nile Rodgers Sessions) / Magic of Love EP (RT Industries)

Do You: Apple / Amazon
Magic: Apple / Amazon

Reissued last year and turning 40 this year, Easton's sixth English-language album, produced by Nile Rodgers, is restored to its original length with some alternate mixes, along with an EP of additional material new to streaming.

Katrina and The Waves, Walk on Water (Expanded Edition) / Love Shine a Light EP (Warner Music U.K.)

Walk on Water: Apple / Amazon
Love Shine a Light: Apple / Amazon

While the deathless, peppy "Walking on Sunshine" was Katrina and The Waves' signature U.S. hit back in 1985, that honor in England goes to "Love Shine a Light," an uplifting pop cut that became the U.K.'s unlikely entrant into the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest - where it won, becoming the nation's fifth (and, to date, final) win. With another Eurovision final kicking off this weekend, Warner has made sure that a 2015 digital expansion of the album and an EP of the track's original remixes (several of which feature on both titles above) are available worldwide.

The Doobie Brothers,"Angels and Mercy" (Rhino) / Live At The Greek Theater 1982 (Eagle Rock)

"Angels": Apple / Amazon
Greek: Apple / Amazon

The Doobies have released the fifth track from their upcoming album Walk This Road. "Angels and Mercy" was penned by Pat Simmons and producer John Shanks, and finds the band in a rootsy, uptempo, guitar-driven mode. Also redelivered to digital partners is the band's Live At The Greek Theater 1982, which originally put a closer on the group as Michael McDonald embarked on a solo career.

Fleetwood Mac, Like Crying: The Songs of Danny Kirwan (Warner) (Apple / Amazon)

Before the Buckingham-Nicks-infused line-up propelled Fleetwood Mac to the top of the pop/rock heap, perhaps the most influential non-original member of the British band was Danny Kirwan. Only a teenager when he was hired as a third guitarist after Peter Green and slide player Jeremy Spencer in 1968, Kirwan's talented instrumentation and songcraft provided a more mainstream rock counterpoint to Green's blues stylings. He played on their earliest hit singles ("Albatross," "Man of the World," "Oh Well") and would be their primary songwriter and vocalist until 1972, when a combination of mental health struggles and alcohol abuse led to his dismissal. After a solo career through the rest of the decade, Spencer fell on hard times, enduring homelessness and entering rehab; by all accounts, he enjoyed peaceful, private years before his death in 2018. This surprise compilation offers more than 90 minutes of tracks Kirwan penned for the Mac, including "Tell Me All the Things You Do," "Dragonfly" and "Sands of Time."

Levon Helm, American Son (MCA/Geffen) (Apple / Amazon)

We're not sure exactly when this cropped up, but Ultimate Classic Rock's Nick DeRiso did a terrific write-up of the recent streaming appearance of American Son, a 1980 album by Levon Helm of The Band. It's an underrated work featuring killer turns by some of Nashville's best session musicians and the favorite "Hurricane," later a Top 5 country hit for Leon Everette.

Connie Francis, Pretty Little Baby (International Versions) (Republic/UMe) (Apple / Amazon)

One of TikTok's most unlikely current successes is a 1962 B-side from pop singer Connie Francis - retired since 2018, but still with us at 87 years old! - that's making shocking viral gains. And so UMe have unearthed seven rare versions of the track in various languages - Spanish, French, Italian, German, Japanese and even Swedish! - for a new digital EP that could well goose the track into the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time ever.

Various Artists, Music from Disneyland Resort 70th Celebration (Walt Disney Records) (Apple / Amazon)

Walt Disney's original Anaheim theme park celebrates 70 magical years this summer, and this album will help commemorate the festivities. It's kind of an odd duck, offering new originals by former Disney act The Jonas Brothers ("Celebrate Happy"), Fitz and The Tantrums ("Makes Me Wanna Move") and Scott Hoying of Pentatonix ("Great Rainbow") alongside abbreviated Disney covers by Hoying ("I 2 I" from A Goofy Movie, the Billie Eilish-penned "Nobody Like U" from Pixar's Turning Red), Boyz II Men (Muppet anthem "Rainbow Connection") and mariachi trio Flor de Toloache ("Surface Pressure" from Encanto). "Celebrate Happy" is the theme for the 70th anniversary celebration, while the covers will appear in a new live show performing in the park.

Brandon Roberts, Andor: Season 2 (Original Score) (Lucasfilm/Walt Disney Records)

Vol. 1: Apple / Amazon
Vol. 2: Apple / Amazon
Vol. 3: Apple / Amazon
Vol. 4: Apple / Amazon

Disney+ bowed the final episodes of Andor this week, bringing the Star Wars prequel series to a deeply satisfying conclusion. Since 2022, the show - telling stories from the creation of the Rebel Alliance against the evil Galactic Empire in the five years leading up to 2016 film prequel Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and the original 1977 film - has been a sensation, with returning Rogue One actors Diego Luna and Genevieve Reilly shining against performances by Stellan Skarsgård and lesser-known actors like Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Elizabeth Dulau (arguably the last three episodes' standout, in her debut performance out of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art). This season, Brandon Roberts took over scoring duties from Nicholas Britell (an Emmy winner for his theme to HBO's Succession), ably melding his themes into new, engaging arrangements and emotional underscore. (The final volume even offers a John Williams-quoting treat.)

John Murphy & David Fleming, Theme from "Superman" (Official Trailer Version) (WaterTower Music) (Apple / Amazon)

Speaking of John Williams, The Maestro's immortal theme to the 1978 film version of Superman has become a de facto anthem for the superhero in multiple iterations. New arrangements from composers John Murphy and David Fleming, who are scoring a new cinematic take on the character due this July from writer/director James Gunn, have now accompanied two trailers for the film - and the second is available to hear on its own just after the preview dropped.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Original West End Cast Recording) (First Night/Warner Classics/Parlophone) (Apple / Amazon)

The Olivier-winning adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's short story about a man who ages in reverse - adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 2008 - features music and lyrics from Darren Clark (with additional lyrical contributions from Jethro Compton, who wrote the musical's book) and performances led by John Dagliesh and Clare Foster. A CD edition is due out June 20.

Rachel Potter, Stages (Joy Machine) (Apple / Amazon)

A star of the stage who's appeared in Broadway productions of The Addams Family and Evita as well as a national tour of Wicked and a season of FOX's singing competition The X Factor, Rachel Potter's new album offers symphonic rearrangements of songs with deep meaning to her, including modern Broadway classics (numbers from Wicked, Les Miserables, Matilda and Waitress) and Disney favorites (including a showstopping "Part of Your World" from The Little Mermaid and "The Animazement Trio," a medley of tunes from Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules). Guest performers include Tony winner Ali Stroker, Christine Dwyer, Jamey Ray, EJ Cardona and Marty Thomas. (Physical copies will be available later this summer.)

Jim Caruso, The Swing Set (Deluxe Edition) (Club44) (Apple / Amazon)

A fixture of the New York City cabaret circuit - his Cast Party variety show has been a fixture of Birdland for more than 20 years - Jim Caruso released The Swing Set, a grab bag of jazzy covers and collaborations (including guest appearances by Michael Feinstein, the late guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, Caruso's Cast Party pianist Billy Stritch and Tony winner Stephanie J. Block). Nearly 15 years later, it's been reissued digitally with a previously unreleased take on "Weird Al" Yankovic's side-splitting original doo-wop breakup anthem "One More Minute."

Wooten Hill, Mercy Now (self-released) (Apple / Amazon)

Thanks to TSD pal Tim Dillinger of God's Music is My Life for bringing this beautiful track to our attention. "Mercy Now" is a recording of the Mary Gauthier song by Grammy-nominated former CCM artist Kim Hill and Paulette Wooten. These two singer-songwriters moved from Nashville to North Carolina where they're performing a number of dates this summer as Wooten Hill; this gorgeous and understated performance is proof positive of their combined vocal magic.

TSD mourns the loss of John Edwards (1944-2025). Filling the shoes of The Spinners' charismatic ead singer Philippé Wynne upon Wynne's departure from the group in late 1976, Edwards was in a far from enviable position. But the veteran singer and soul man made it very clear that he was no one's mere replacement. The group had first seen Edwards perform in 1973. Impressed, they'd invited him to open for them in Toledo the following year. When Philippé fell ill with tonsilitis in May 1975, John filled in for him onstage for a couple of months. Wynne returned, but things were never the same. At their New Year's Eve 1976 show in San Francisco, The Spinners placed Edwards in the audience (unbeknownst to Wynne) should the lead singer decide to cut his performance short. When John finally joined the group on a permanent basis at the tail end of the Thom Bell years, he made his mark with a sound all his own. He led The Spinners back up the charts with his powerful lead vocal on Michael Zager's production of "Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl" in 1979 and remained with the group through 2000. Take a listen to "Working My Way Back to You" (Apple / Amazon) or John's cool, funky solo version of America's "Tin Man" (Apple / Amazon) and bask in his warm, resonant sound - one which will never be silenced.

We also would like to say farewell to composer Charles Strouse (1928-2025), one of the last links to the Golden Age of the American Musical. Had Charles only written the scores to Bye Bye Birdie (with Lee Adams) or Annie (with Martin Charnin), he would have gone down in Broadway history. But his career - which began with The Poni-Tails' hit recording of his "Born Too Late," co-authored by Fred Tobias - was so much richer than just those two era-defining musicals, and he continued writing memorable music well into the 21st century. We'll pay full-length tribute to Charles Strouse next week, but in the meantime, why not give a listen to one of his most recognizable anthems?  Here's Annie's eternally optimistic "Tomorrow," as performed by Andrea McArdle (Apple / Amazon), Barbra Streisand (Apple / Amazon), Grace Jones (Apple / Amazon), and - in a live version released on Charles Sings Strouse - the composer himself (Apple / Amazon). Thanks for the music, Mr. S.

I noticed this week that Gary “US” Bonds 1981 album “Dedication” and 1982’s “Out of Work” were available on Amazon for download (I have been looking for these for a while. Just an FYI in case anyone else was looking as well.

Was excited about the Perry/Nelson duet on "Faithfully" until I heard it. I know it is for a good cause, but man is it terrible - just an awful version of the song.
