One of the most dynamic pop acts of the 2000s is ready to have a kiki with fans once more, thanks to a new expanded edition of their debut album and return to touring.

The self-titled first album by Scissor Sisters turns 20 (and a year, but who’s counting) in 2025, and will be reissued by Republic Records as a greatly expanded edition offering the album in a digipak alongside two bonus discs of B-sides, remixes and seven previously unheard tracks. A truncated offering of the B-sides and outtakes will be included on a double vinyl edition. Both formats will be available July 18.

Though Scissor Sisters – vocalists Jake Shears and Ana Matronic, bassist/keyboardist Scott “Babydaddy” Hoffman, guitarist Del Marquis and drummer Paddy Boom – had dizzying success overseas with a dance/pop/rock hybrid that took cues from some of the great U.K. pop acts, they were in fact America. Kentucky-raised Shears and Hoffman found their scene in the queer club scene on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, recruiting cabaret singer Matronic, Marquis and Boom into their flamboyant musical act. Signing to the indie A Touch of Class, the Sisters released the single “Electrobix” in 2002 but gained considerable attention for its B-side, a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” that earned positive reactions from David Gilmour and Roger Waters, becoming a U.K. Top 10. It was off to the races from there in England: while the album ascended halfway up the Billboard 200 and Elton John-esque single “Take Your Mama” was a radio favorite, Scissor Sisters topped the U.K. charts, selling nearly three million copies and becoming the best-selling LP of 2004. The bawdy dance cut “Filthy/Gorgeous” would top the U.S. dance charts and became another U.K. Top 10 hit.

Oddly, Scissor Sisters’ future successes would be a see-saw between each side of the Atlantic. Second album Ta-Dah (2006) and lead single “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’,” co-written and duetted with Elton John, were both U.K. chart-toppers that made little noise Stateside. But fourth album Magic Hour (2012)’s final single “Let’s Have a Kiki,” which missed the U.K. charts, became a No. 1 dance hit in America and an enduring LGBTQ+ classic. After more than seven years of inactivity, the Scissor Sisters reissue comes with a spate of new tour dates, featuring Shears, Babydaddy, Marquis and drummer Randy Real (who replaced the amicably departed Paddy Boom in 2008 – Ana Matronic is sitting this round out).

1 thought on “Take Your Mama Out: Scissor Sisters’ Debut Gets Deluxe Reissue”

  1. That debut is just classic…and deserves the deluxe treatment…that outtake “Magnifique” is great!! I have to admit, the 3rd & 4th albums did not hit me like the first 2 did, but perhaps they will grow on me when i rebuy em eventually…i know “Glee” did a fun cover of “Kiki”…also i have this fun 2cd deluxe of “Ta-Dah” with the elevator doors…l also think Jake’s recent solo album “Last Man Dancing” is as good as the best Scissor stuff…
