Foreigner is bringing 4 to the fore with a new deluxe box set devoted to their blockbuster fourth album.
Available September 12, this new edition of 4 will include a new remix of the original 1981 album and three discs of unreleased material, including studio outtakes, unheard songs from the recording sessions, instrumental mixes and selections from the band's world tour of 1981-1982. A Blu-ray Audio will include the album remix (plus the newly-released "Fool If You Love Him," available as the new single from the set below) in high-resolution stereo, as well as a new Dolby Atmos mix of the original 10-track LP. The stereo mix will also be available on a separate vinyl pressing. The digibook packaging includes more than 60 unreleased photos from the period.
The intercontinental group was no stranger to success from their inception; their previous three albums were all Top 5s in America, with hits like "Feels Like the First Time," "Cold As Ice," "Hot Blooded" and "Double Vision." But 4 had an unusually complex birth. After three straight years of releases, the group released no new material in 1980, first slimming down from six members to four - founding members Lou Gramm (vocals), Mick Jones (guitar/keyboards) and Dennis Elliott (drums) and bassist Rick Wills, who'd been with them since 1979's Head Games - and reconvening at Electric Lady Studios to figure out a new album. Joining them was producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who'd recently made a breakthrough as the producer of AC/DC's Back in Black a year prior, along with a cast of A-list session musicians: Stories frontman Ian Lloyd offering backing vocals, a little-known Thomas Dolby contributing synthesizers, slide guitarist Hugh McCracken, and saxophone from both Mark Rivera (who'd later join Billy Joel's touring band) and, on the bridge to the simmering "Urgent," a cameo from Motown legend Junior Walker.
"Recording our fourth album took the better part of two years," Jones said in a statement. "It was something that just had to be right and I truly believe that Mutt Lange, Lou, Rick, Dennis, and I accomplished something very special." Indeed, 4 spent 10 non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 through 1981 and 1982, and "Urgent" and the synth-led ballad "Waiting for a Girl Like You" were both Top 5 singles. (Third single "Juke Box Hero," a classic rock radio staple, was also certified platinum.) The album sold some six million copies in America alone, and the stylistic balance of edgy rock and sleek pop anticipated the chart-topping power ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is" in 1984.
Foreigner's line-up began to metamorphose after 1990, and the still-active group has the unusual distinction of not having any of its original members on a full-time basis. Mick Jones remains a member in the studio, but has not toured since 2023 due to a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. Vocalist Kelly Hansen, a member since 2005, now shares lead duties with guitarist Luis Maldonado as of this year - the latter can be heard on recent Spanish-language versions of some of the band's biggest hits - but Gramm will return as a guest vocalist on select U.S. dates this December. (Bassist Jeff Pilson recently revealed that Gramm contributed new vocals and lyrics to reclaimed 4 outtake "Fool If You Love Him.")
