As summer heats up, Real Gone has another slate of six varied releases hitting store shelves, tomorrow, July 11.  You’ll find a variety of genres here from Broadway to nu metal to rock to country to jazz.

First up is a vinyl reissue of the Broadway cast album Kinky Boots.  The 2013 show is based on the 2005 movie of the same title.  The story revolves around Charlie, who inherits a failing shoe factory from his father.  To turn the business around, he teams with drag performer Lola to begin manufacturing high-heeled boots.  Directed by Jerry Mitchell (Boop!, The Devil Wears Prada), the musical was written by Harvey Fierstein (recent recipient of a Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement) with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper.  It starred Stark Sands, Billy Porter, Annaleigh Ashford, and Lena Hall, all of whom are heard on the cast album.  Kinky Boots was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won six including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Actor (Billy Porter).  The U.K. production also won the 2015 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.  The original Broadway production closed in 2019.  The cast album premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard Cast Albums chart and No. 51 on the Billboard 200, the highest placement for a cast album in two years at that point.  The song “Sex In the Heel” reached the top ten of Billboard‘s club charts, a first for a Broadway song in 25 years.  The album also won the Best Musical Theater Album Grammy.

Real Gone’s new 2LP reissue comes on fuchsia vinyl.  It is also available in two variants: a “Union Jack” colored vinyl, limited to 100 copies and available only from Real Gone’s website, and a Wax Mage edition.  The package also features a gatefold jacket and a color insert.

Nu metal band Static-X’s third album, Shadow Zone, was a stylistic departure for the group.  After lead singer Wayne Static performed a song on The Queen of the Damned soundtrack in 2002 by Korn’s Johnathan Davis, Static-X went with a new producer (Josh Abraham) and new band members for their next album.  2003’s Shadow Zone would add more melody to the group’s sound.  It climbed to No. 20 on the Billboard charts.  Two singles, “The Only” and “So,” hit the Top 40 of the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

The reissue from Real Gone comes on metallic gold and green vinyl.  It has been remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision and includes a color inner sleeve with lyrics.

Continuing in the nu metal vein brings us to 2002’s Concrete from Fear Factory.  However, it’s not actually from 2002, but 1991.  The LA group had only been around for two years by that point and recorded an album with Ross Robinson.  But the album was never released as a record deal could not be reached with Robinson and he retained the rights and masters.  A cassette copy of the album, however, got Fear Factory their deal with Roadrunner Records.  Their 1992 debut for that label, Soul of A New Machine, featured many re-recorded songs from Concrete.  Fear Factory stayed on Roadrunner for another four albums through 2001.  When they left the label, Roadrunner acquired the rights to Concrete from Robinson and released the album in 2002.  The group had no say in the sale and their opinions were reportedly divided.

Real Gone’s reissue marks the first vinyl release of the album.  Pressed on “gun metal” grey vinyl, the package contains an insert with new liner notes and has been remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision.

Rusted Root was formed in Pittsburgh in 1990 by singer-guitarist Michael Glabicki, bassist Patrick Norman, and percussionist Liz Berlin.  The jam band recorded their first album Cruel Sun in 1992 before they signed with Mercury.  The first album for that label was 1994’s When I Woke.  It proved to be a hit, going eventually going platinum.  The most famous song and lead single from the album is “Send Me On My Way.”  A version appeared on Cruel Sun but it was re-recorded for When I Woke.  It climbed to No. 72 on the charts.  However, it has become more famous over the years due to its use in pop culture and has become the band’s most famous song.  “Send Me on My Way” has been heard in movies and TV shows such as Pie in the Sky, Matilda, Party of Five, Ice Age, Race the Sun, Maid, and New Girl as well as showing up in commercials.

Real Gone’s 2LP set marks the vinyl debut for the album.  It comes on rust and blue sky vinyl and has been remastered.  The package includes an insert.  It is limited to 2,500 copies.

Back in November, Real Gone released a vinyl version of Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Stones In the Road.  Now, the label is returning to her catalog with a vinyl debut of the album that preceded Stones, 1992’s Come On Come On.  This album was a huge hit for Carpenter and remains her most commercially successful album, selling around 3 million copies.  It hit No. 11 on the country charts and No. 31 on the pop side.  Guests on the record included Joe Diffie, Rosanne Cash, The Indigo Girls, and Shawn Colvin.  No less than seven singles were released, all which made the country survey:  “I Feel Lucky” (No. 4), “Not Too Much to Ask” (with Diffie, No. 15), “Passionate Kisses” (a cover of the Lucinda Williams song, No. 4/also No. 57 Pop), “The Hard Way” (No. 11), “The Bug” (a cover of the Dire Straits song, No. 16), “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” (No. 2), and “I Take My Chances” (No. 2).

Real Gone’s reissue comes on grape vinyl and includes a printed inner sleeve with lyrics.

Jazz/soul drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie has performed on numerous albums over the years including those by Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, King Curtis, Tom Rush, Albert Ayler, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Roberta Flack, Cat Stevens, Todd Rundgren, Steely Dan, Al Green, and many others.  Purdie was the musical director for Aretha Franklin for a time and has also played on Broadway.  He pioneered rhythmic techniques including one named after him: “The Purdie Shuffle,” tapping triplets against a half-time backbeat.  He also recorded extensively as a leader since 1967.  Real Gone is going back to near the beginning of his headlining career for a vinyl reissue of 1971’s Stand by Me (Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get) by Pretty Purdie and the Playboys.  The Playboys consisted of guitarist Cornell Dupree, bassist Chuck Rainey, keyboardist Harold Wheeler, trumpeter Snooky Young, and reedman Seldon Powell.  Purdie wrote three songs on the album: “Modern Jive” (with Richard Tee), “Artificialness” (with Gil Scott-Heron), and “Funky Mozart” (with Harold Wheeler and Mort Goode).  The rest of the album is made up of covers such as the two in the title and two from Carole King (“It’s Too Late,” “You’ve Got a Friend”), among others.

Real Gone’s package comes in a replica gatefold jacket and is pressed on black vinyl.  A “quasar” vinyl edition, limited to 75 copies, is available exclusively from Real Gone’s website.

  1. Hoping it’s a typo. The tracklist for “Come On Come On” is missing the album’s most beautiful and emotional song.
