Fleetwood Mac's self-titled 1975 album which introduced Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the band has been reissued over the years in various formats. Now, Rhino is bringing a new dimension to the classic, 9x Platinum-certified LP with its premiere on Blu-ray Audio in the immersive Dolby Atmos format. Additionally, a remastered edition will be available as part of the label's High Fidelity series of audiophile-quality vinyl reissues. All formats are due on August 8.
TSD went into detail about Fleetwood Mac for a previous reissue: Before the album that became Fleetwood Mac was made, the British-based blues-rockers had been a quartet: Mick Fleetwood and John McVie had served as the rhythm section (drums and bass, respectively) since the group's inception in 1967; Christine McVie had contributed vocals and keyboards since 1970. The group's most recent album, 1974's Heroes Are Hard to Find, was the last for singer/guitarist Bob Welch, a member since 1971. When Welch left to join the band Paris, Fleetwood took a suggestion from producer Keith Olsen, who'd just done an album with Buckingham and Nicks--singers, songwriters and romantic partners whose distinctive styles proved to be the necessary creative boost for which the band was looking.
Armed with tracks written for both Buckingham Nicks and a never-completed follow-up album, Fleetwood Mac were now a powerful, straightforward rock outfit with a myriad of unique creative perspectives that connected with wide swaths of the record-buying public. Fleetwood Mac became the band's first major success in America, where it topped the Billboard 200 for a week in the fall of 1976--more than a year after its release--sold more than 5 million copies and put three singles in the American Top 20: "Over My Head," "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me." (Years later, in 1998, a live version of the beloved, Nicks-penned "Landslide" became a Top 10 adult contemporary hit.) While the band was headed for unbelievable tension, as all five members' relationships (four of which were with other band members) ended simultaneously, the result was the unprecedented smash album Rumours and a destiny of entering the pop-rock canon. (Rumours was issued in the Blu-ray Audio format containing a Dolby Atmos mix in 2024.)
Rhino's Blu-ray Audio premiere of Fleetwood Mac features a new Dolby Atmos mix by Chris James. It also includes the 5.1 surround mix by original producer Ken Caillat and Claus Trelby which was first issued in 2017. The Rhino High Fidelity vinyl reissue of Fleetwood Mac has been remastered by Kevin Gray, cut from the original analog master tapes, and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal. This LP is limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies, and a version (limited to 2,000 copies) will also be available which adds two replica 7-inch singles featuring the single mixes of "Over My Head" b/w "Rhiannon" and "Say You Love Me" b/w "Blue Letter." Both are Rhino.com exclusives, while the Blu-ray Audio will be available at general retailer. Anthony DeCurtis provides new liner notes for the High Fidelity release.
