Turning to Gold: Ronnie Wood Looks Back on "Fearless: The Anthology," Features Rod Stewart, Faces, Rolling Stones

Ronnie Wood is celebrating 60+ years in music with his first-ever anthology, comprising solo tracks as well as key cuts from his time playing with the illustrious likes of The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, and Jeff Beck as well as his earliest recordings with The Birds and The Creation.  Fearless: The Anthology 1965-2025 is due from BMG on September 26 in 2CD and 2LP formats, with 38 tracks on the CD set including four all-new recordings exclusive to this collection.

Fearless kicks off with a pair of recordings from the Middlesex native's early stints as guitarist for The Birds ("You're on My Mind") and The Creation ("The Girls Are Naked").  In 1967, he joined The Jeff Beck Group and kickstarted his career - now as a bassist.  Wood first teamed with singer Rod Stewart as a member of Beck's band before the duo joined Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and Kenney Jones in the post-Small Faces group simply called Faces.  The famously hard-partying, hard-rocking band prolifically recorded during this period both under the band name and on Stewart's own albums; that fertile period is represented here with such stone-cold classics as Faces' "Had Me a Real Good Time," "Stay with Me," and "Ooh La La," and Stewart's "Gasoline Alley" and "Every Picture Tells a Story."  During his time with Faces, the versatile Wood played guitar and bass in addition to contributing vocals.

In 1974, with Faces splintering, Wood declared, I've Got My Own Album to Do.  Ironically, the title came from the cries of his famous friends whom he'd enlisted to participate!  Those mates included Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, George Harrison, David Bowie, Mick Taylor, Stewart, and McLagan.  Three songs, including the Harrison co-write "Far East Man," have been culled here.  Wood was getting closer to the Rolling Stones camp; in 1973, he'd contributed guitar and vocals to "It's Only Rock 'n Roll (But I Like It)," and with Mick Taylor's departure from the band in late 1974, Wood was called upon to add guitar to Black and Blue.  Though still a member of Faces, Wood toured with the Stones in 1975.  The following April, he officially joined the band - a gig which remains to the present day.

Black and Blue is represented here with "Hey Negrita," a Jagger/Richards song on which Wood is credited with "inspiration."  He brought in the song's central lick, working with Jagger, Richards, and Charlie Watts to create its funky blend of reggae and Latin sounds.  Key Wood contributions to future Stones albums such as Emotional Rescue ("Dance (Pt. 1))", Tattoo You ("Black Limousine," "No Use in Crying"), and Undercover ("Pretty Beat Up") are included here, as well as "Everything Is Turning to Gold" from the compilation Sucking in the Seventies.

Wood sporadically extended his solo discography over the years, and each of his studio albums from I've Got My Own Album to Do through his most recent set, 2010's I Feel Like Playing, are sampled on the new anthology.  So is the 1976 soundtrack album to the Canadian film Mahoney's Last Stand, composed and performed by Wood and Ronnie Lane.  (Ian McLagan and Kenney Jones also appeared on the Mahoney's soundtrack, along with such Stones associates as Ian Stewart, Bobby Keys, and Jim Price.)

Four new recordings round out this collection: Allen Toussaint's "A Certain Girl," with vocals by Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde; The Falcons' "You're So Fine," featuring Imelda May; Hopeton Lewis' rocksteady classic "Take It Easy;" and a new Wood composition, "Mother of Pearl."  The new recordings have been produced by Ronnie's son Jesse Wood and Sean Genockey.  "You're So Fine" is available to stream now.

Following the Rolling Stones' massively successful 2024 Hackney Diamonds tour, Ronnie Wood hasn't been resting on his laurels.  He recently joined Rod Stewart at Glastonbury to reprise "Stay with Me."  Paul Sexton has penned the new liner notes for this collection.  The 2LP vinyl version offers 20 of the 38 tracks on the 2CD edition.  Both formats of Fearless: The Anthology are due from BMG on September 26.  You'll find the track listings and pre-order links below.  As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.
