Soundtrack Watch: Bond Back on Vinyl At La-La Land, Intrada Unsheathes Kamen’s ‘Three Musketeers’

A new month kicks off with a bonanza of soundtrack reissues from La-La Land and Intrada – including more planned activity from the world of James Bond.
La-La Land has made three archival titles available for sale from yesterday (June 1). First is a vinyl edition of their remastered CD of John Barry’s score to Goldfinger. The third James Bond film (and the second to be scored by the British composer/arranger) scored big with the series’ first-ever title theme, co-written by Barry, Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse and sung with paint-peeling gusto by Shirley Bassey. It’s now a key part of the formula when putting Ian Fleming’s literary secret agent on film to this day. While La-La Land’s CD (produced by Neil S. Bulk, restored by Chris Malone and remastered by Doug Schwartz) turned up little in the way of unissued material, it did properly put every cue – including a few that were first available only on U.K. pressings of the LP – in chronological order. That program is replicated here for vinyl, available in two gold color variants: a “Fort Knox bullion” edition, available from the label and limited to 700 copies, and a “body paint” version available at the official James Bond store at only 300 copies. Bond score authority Jon Burlingame has penned liner notes for the eight-page booklet in the gatefold packaging designed by Jim Titus. (Variety broke the news of this set last week, also revealing that LLL is still very much in the Bond music business after expanding or reissuing six Bond scores since 2024 alone. This summer will see some sort of remastered reissue on CD of Barry’s score to 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, with 2LP editions of his scores to The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Moonraker (1979) also on the way – the plan being to make sure “the fans have something to look forward to every six weeks or so.”)
Next available from La-La Land is a sequel to their first 4CD set of archival scores from Western films released by Paramount, first issued in 2019. Union Pacific – The Paramount Westerns Collection, Vol. 2 offers another four CDs with selections from scores to more than a dozen classics and favorites of the genre, released between 1939 and 1968. Only a few – Cyril Mockridge’s score to The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and Elmer Bernstein’s work for Tin Star among them – have ever been released before, and even those boast unreleased material and new restoration from engineer Chris Malone. John Takis and Frank K. DeWald have produced the set and penned its liner notes, with Dan Goldwasser designing the package to match its predecessor (which was, like this one, limited to 1000 copies).

La-La Land’s last archival score of the month is another in their “Ultimate Cut” series of remixed and remastered scores to the classic slasher series Friday the 13th. This time, the score to 1986’s Part VI – Jason Lives is on display, marking composer Harry Manfredini’s sixth score accompanying Jason Voorhees’ hockey mask-sporting, machete-wielding marches of terror. (He’d co-compose follow-up Part VII – The New Blood and returned after a one-film absence for 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell – The Final Friday and 2002’s Jason X.) Co-producers Dan Goldwasser and Brian Satterwhite and their team (restoration and mix by Matthew Crawford; assembly, edit and liner notes by Satterwhite; mastering by James Nelson; art direction by Goldwasser with cover art by Scott Saslow) promise another bloody good time with all the “ki-ki-ki, ma-ma-ma”s you’d expect plus some unearthed, unreleased material not available on previous reissues. Though not marketed as a limited title, the label will offer copies autographed by the composer while supplies last. (La-La Land will also release two physical editions of scores to new films in series’ they’ve had long ties to, available to order later this month. Those scores are Max Aruj and Alfie Godfrey’s score to Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Dominic Lewis’ music to Karate Kid Legends.)

Recent weeks have offered a pair of archival score releases from Intrada as well. First up is Michael Kamen’s swashbuckling work on The Three Musketeers. A loose, Disney-produced adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ novel, this go-round was a sort of Young Guns take on the material, with two of that film’s stars, Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland, drawing swords along Oliver Platt and Chris O’Donnell as aspiring musketeer D’Artagnan. (Tim Curry and Rebecca de Mornay co-starred.) Kamen’s rollicking work recalls that of his pop epic score to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves two years earlier; this film also has a power ballad of a theme co-created by Kamen and Robert John “Mutt” Lange. “All for Love” was, appropriately, sung by three vocalists: a returning Bryan Adams, labelmate Sting and British icon Rod Stewart. While the film was a critical failure, the song was an unlikely chart-topper in America – perplexingly, Sting’s only No. 1 hit as a soloist. Intrada’s 2CD program offers the original edited soundtrack release (complete with “All for Love”) as well as an expanded score presentation remixed by Bruce Botnick (who co-produces with Neil S. Bulk). John Takis writes the liner notes.
Finally, having just successfully fan-funded another score re-recording project, the fruits of their latest are now available on CD. Here, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by Adam Clemens and reconstructed and recorded by Leigh Phillips) has recorded new takes on a trio of unavailable TV movie scores by renowned composer Jerry Goldsmith: The People Next Door (1968), Pursuit (1972) and Crawlspace (1972). These short but diverse and thematic works are accompanied by new notes by Jon Burlingame, with cue-specific notes by Yavar Moradi of The Goldsmith Odyssey podcast.
