Welcome to another edition of The Weekend Stream, The Second Disc's review of notable catalogue titles (and some new ones, too!) making digital debuts. A soft-rock legend says farewell on his own terms, a Broadway star channels one of mid-century pop's greatest voices, plus everything from video game music to "jazz-tinged" alt-pop oddities is headed your way this week!
Stephen Bishop, THIMK (Life's a Bish) (Apple / Amazon)
Stephen Bishop is billing THIMK as his final studio album - a decision he explains in the spoken word track that concludes the set - and to commemorate the occasion, he's pulled out all of the stops. THIMK features an illustrious "who's who" of guests including Eric Clapton, Sting, Graham Nash, Art Garfunkel, Dave Grusin, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, David Pack, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell of America, David Benoit, Marilyn Martin, Jeff Larson, and the late Leah Kunkel as well as stalwart musicians Nathan East, Greg Phillinganes, Leland Sklar, Sean Hurley, Greg Leisz, Nic Collins, Jack Tempchin, Steve Porcaro, Jake Reed, and Steve Gadd. Its twelve tracks feature Bish originals (most of which were composed decades ago but unfinished until now) and self-covers including a new recording of the Oscar-nominated "It Might Be You" featuring the song's co-writer, Dave Grusin, accompanying Bishop. Jimmy Webb even drops by for a solo piano rendition of Bishop's hit "On and On" following the spoken-word track. THIMK is streaming everywhere now, and a special CD or vinyl edition available exclusively from Bishop's website adds two bonus tracks, "Dance Off the Moon" and "You Can Laugh at Me."
Rick Springfield, Live At The Song (BMG Rights Management) (Apple / Amazon)
The Song is a Hard Rock Cafe-produced, syndicated music series featuring live sets from generations of classic acts and thematic performances. This weekend, Rick Springfield is the latest guest to appear, and three stripped-down cuts from his performance ("Jessie's Girl," "Love Somebody," "Don't Talk to Strangers") are now digitally available.
David Longworth Wallingford, Fate, Chance or Happenstance? (SuperVisible Multi Media) (Apple / Amazon)
No longer content to put out digital reissues, SuperVisible Multi Media has their first original release out this week from David Wallingford, best known for his work in the alt-rock group Astronaut (SuperVisible head Tim Smith was a co-founder) and the art-pop duo Vaganza, whose self-titled 1998 album (on the Geffen-distributed Outpost label) is a minor cult classic. Fate, Chance or Happenstance? dates back to after both of those bands: a trio set-up with bassist Matt Kohut and drummer Aaron Thurston that was recorded in 2000 but unreleased until now, marrying some of Vaganza's more ambitious trappings to a more straightforward jazz-pop framework.
Rare All-Stars, Ruby Anniversary EP (Original Game Soundtrack) (Microsoft) (Apple / Amazon)
One of England's greatest contributions to the video game industry is the Twycross developer Rare, who rose to prominence in the '90s developing classic games for Nintendo (the Donkey Kong Country series, GoldenEye 007, Banjo Kazooie and more) before moving under the aegis of Microsoft's Xbox in the '00s (Viva Piñata, Sea of Thieves). The company is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and is building on their 2020 collection of in-game music with an EP featuring five more cues from their classic games, composed by luminaries in the game music field like David Wise, Robin Beanland and Grant Kirkhope.
Jonathan Groff, Just in Time (Original Broadway Cast Recording) (Atlantic) (Apple / Amazon)
Look out, old Bobby is back! Mr. Bobby Darin returns to his home of Atlantic Records - sort of! - with this new cast recording preserving Jonathan Groff's incandescent performance as the late singer. The album also features Erika Henningsen as Sandra Dee and Gracie Lawrence as Connie Francis, but the unquestionable star is Groff, who channels the late Darin's energy, bravado, swagger, and, most of all, joie de vivre. Four Darin deep cuts have been recorded as bonus tracks ("I Am," "Rock Island Line," "Eighteen Yellow Roses," "Orange Furniture Store") and they join the expected favorites such as "Mack the Knife," "If I Were a Carpenter," "Beyond the Sea," and "Splish Splash." Just in Time is still packing houses eight times a week at Circle in the Square on Broadway.
