Cut to the Feeling: Carly Rae Jepsen Celebrates 10 Years of ‘Emotion’ with Expanded Reissue

A bona fide recent pop classic is getting revisited as it passes the decade mark. Carly Rae Jepsen’s E•MO•TION will be reissued on vinyl and digitally later this year with a bonus LP featuring a side of rarities and a side of unreleased tracks.
The 2LP presentation, pressed on magenta swirl vinyl with an alternate cover, offers all 17 tracks released back in 2015 (on standard, deluxe and Target-exclusive pressings of the CD), 2017’s deliriously catchy non-LP single “Cut to the Feeling,” four outtakes from the album’s mythic sessions (including new single “More,” which you can hear below) and two remixes of opening track “Run Away with Me” by Kyle Shearer (who produced the deluxe cut “Never Get to Hold You”) and ex-Vampire Weekend member Rostam Batmanglij (who produced the album’s “Warm Blood”). Additionally, the original album will be pressed on blue swirl vinyl as well as a special zoetrope variant.
When the Canadian singer re-emerged after the overnight success of “Call Me Maybe” in 2012 (which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks that summer), there was every reason to believe, off the strength of lead single “I Really Like You” (featuring quirky cameos from Justin Bieber, whose enthusiastic recommendation of “Call Me Maybe” made the song go viral, and Tom Hanks), that E•MO•TION would repeat the pleasant pop charms of her breakthrough album Kiss. Then a few odd things happened: “I Really Like You” only dented the second-to-last spot on the U.S. Top 40, and the album missed the Top 10 in America entirely. This was fully at odds with critical consensus – E•MO•TION made not only the year-end best-of lists for Billboard, Pitchfork and Rolling Stone but their decade-end lists too – and the carefree, catchy pop of its grooves. From the blaring sax solo that kicked off opener “Run Away with Me” to collaborations with indie pop heroes like Devonte Hynes of Blood Orange (the synth slow jam “All That”), Mattman & Robin (the sun-kissed “Gimmie Love”), Dan Nigro (the future Olivia Rodrigo/Chappell Roan collaborator co-wrote and co-produced the funky closer “When I Needed You”), Greg Kurstin (“Boy Problems”) and even songwriting from cult-pop favorites Sia and HAIM (“Making the Most of the Night”), no one track on E•MO•TION was a consensus favorite, leading to a warmly-received pop cult classic that guaranteed the former Canadian Idol finalist a lengthy career as a musical heroine.
Jepsen was overflowing with creativity while making E•MO•TION, reportedly writing some 250 songs in the process of creating the album. Deluxe tracks like “I Didn’t Just Come Here to Dance” and “Favourite Colour” are as good as the standard album’s highlights, as was “Cut to the Feeling,” a track used in the 2016 Canadian animated film Ballerina (which featured Jepsen in the voice cast). (Eight tracks were compiled in 2016 as the companion album E•MO•TION: Side B, something that’s now become a tradition for the singer’s subsequent releases.) The killer “More,” one of four outtakes from the sessions getting unearthed now, further proves the hot streak of this period. Carly Rae Jepsen may never have another Top 10 single again, but with albums like E•MO•TION, she may not need one.
The expanded album will be available October 17. Amazon pre-orders have yet to appear, but the vinyl is available from Jepsen’s official store.

I HATE that this is not available on CD! 🙁
Agreed one hundred percent. Fingers crossed they’re prepping a 12CD set including all 250 songs! Also, I really hope they’re not doing that. But a three or four CD set with the Side B songs included would be welcome.
That’s what I had hoped for, too – saves a little on importing Side B from Japan! (We’ve not seen any indication that this 10th anniversary reissue will be available on CD in Japan, either.)
There’s always the 15th and 20th anniversaries!
