Paisley Park is in Your Heart: Prince's 'Around the World in a Day' Expanded for 40th Anniversary

Around the World in a Day deluxe

BUY NOW FROM AMAZON.COM

Due credit to the Prince estate: they made good on one of their promises. The late artist's estate will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Prince and The Revolution's Around the World in a Day with a deluxe edition gathering all the non-LP material from the original release.

Available November 21 in a variety of formats including 2CD and 140-gram 3LP editions, the set will feature the 1985 follow-up to Purple Rain, along with 13 non-LP remixes and B-sides - four of which will make their debut on CD. (The set includes no outtakes or unreleased Vault material.) Original mastering engineer Bernie Grundman has overseen the remastering along with engineer Chris James. Additional formats include the remastered album on standalone CD and black vinyl (with the CD featuring the 12" extension of "America" as a bonus track, being present separately from the bonus disc on the deluxe version as well), picture disc and blue marble vinyl variants and a streaming-only Dolby Atmos mix.

An eternally hard-to-pin-down artist, Prince was already at work on the album when Purple Rain hit theaters and record store shelves, and the LP arrived less than a month after he'd finished touring that record. "I didn't wait to see what would happen with Purple Rain," he told Rolling Stone. "That's why the albums sound so different." (He'd call it "the smartest thing" he did in that same interview.) Influenced by the psychedelia of the West Coast-based Paisley Underground movement (but not, he was clear in one of his only period interviews, The Beatles), Around the World mixes Middle Eastern orchestration with pure pop melodies and guitar bravado. Here, Prince's lyrical focus is all over, from sexy thrills ("Raspberry Beret," "Tamborine") to weary broadsides against the music industry ("Pop Life"), the promise and reality of modern life ("Paisley Park," "America") and the desire for spiritual salvation ("The Ladder," "Temptation"). "Paisley Park" - one of the author's favorite Prince tracks - would become something of a mantra for The Artist: he'd release the album through Warner Bros.' newly-established imprint of the same name - where he'd sign a fistful of artists over the next decade - and build a recording complex in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen under that name as well.

Though Prince requested that Warner wait a month before releasing any single from the album, they ultimately pulled four of the album's nine tracks for release: the U.S. Top 10s "Raspberry Beret" and "Pop Life" and two region-specific releases: the U.K.-only "Paisley Park" and the U.S.-exclusive "America." Between them, they were backed by some of his strongest B-sides, including the fiery, romantic "She's Always in My Hair," the slinky "Girl" and "Hello," Prince's side of skipping the recording session for USA for Africa's "We Are the World." (He'd give the USA for Africa album project the track "4 the Tears in Your Eyes," broadcasting an alternate performance of the song in a video that aired during Live Aid.) There were also unique U.K. remixes of "Pop Life" and "Paisley Park," as well as a 12" version of "America" that provided the unedited take of the track before the tape literally ran out. While many of these were released on compilations in Prince's lifetime, like The Hits/The B-Sides and Ultimate, four tracks make their CD debuts: the extended "America" (released as a digital single this summer), extensions of "Hello" and "Girl" and the original We Are the World album version of "4 the Tears in Your Eyes." (The harder-to-find U.K. remixes were included on a Japanese-exclusive CD pressing of His Majesty's Pop Life: The Purple Mix Club, a double 12" promo of remixes released in that country back in 1985.)

Amazon links are starting to populate for the various formats and can be found below. (As an Amazon affiliate, we earn from qualifying purchases.) The picture disc is exclusive to Prince's official store. All versions hit stores November 21.

The Prince Estate had a chance 2 quell the disquiet or downright pissed off mood of the fans but have fallen way short with this release. Unless they plan 2 release a SDE of ATWIAD, with previously unreleased songs from this period at some point then all this release does is make us fans despair even more. The Prince Estate r completely clueless. Amateurs.

Amen. Although I probably will get it, I'm still amazed of their lack of vision and lack of trust in the fan base for not releasing the documentary.

So true. As to having extras to tack on … How about the Prince versions of songs like G-spot, The Screams of Passion, Mutiny, All Day, All Night, or A Love Bizarre. Not to mention the original 1982 version of Raspberry Beret. This was supposed to be a year of celebrating ATWIAD, The Family, and 1985 as a whole. Plenty to choose from. This was such a prolific period for a Prince. ATWIAD is such a great album. This is a big let down.

Niko Bolas said in interview for Originals Vol. 1 that he had worked on more songs than just that one disc, though he didn't name them. Presumably at least some of your choices would fit that bill. But who knows where the rights to those recordings stand? Was that a Sony, WB, or Estate-funded project? Could end up being yet another announced, completed, and may-never-b-released Prince album, like so many others he forgot he ever made.

Disappointing they did not at least include the "America (Video Mix)" recorded live in Paris -- or the other tracks from that short live set.

Any unreleased vault material from this period would end up on a future deluxe edition of the Parade album and not this album. Many of the tracks on ATWIAD were recorded before the Purple Rain tour started. The last show of the Purple Rain tour was on April 7th, 1985 in Miami. I was in the tenth row for that controversial Easter Sunday show. Two weeks later this album was released. Hard to believe but there simply are no "extras" that could be tacked on to this album. If and when the Parade album gets the deluxe treatment your wish will come true as that one promises to be filled with many unreleased vault tracks, demos, etc. recorded during 1985 and 1986.

Mentioned here and included as part of the Estate's marketing push is this correct information: "the nearly 22-minute 12" version of America (which makes its debut on CD)"

The long version of America was officially released on CD on a WB compilation called "Minneapolis Funk" in 2002.

Not the first time they've shown their ignorance about the materials they have been put in charge of and, sadly, I don't expect it to be the last...

One could absolutely split a hair even further that - if memory serves - the version on that comp fades a bit before the cold ending/tape run-out on the original 12", which would make this, assumably the same as what was released digitally in July, the true CD debut of the full track.

According to princevault that version was edited, the last 15 seconds were cut, so…

What I would like to hear on this re-release (and frankly on all pre-CD-domination albums that were produced to have two sides of music) is an extra space between the original sides 1 and 2 presentations. Prince in particular was expert at sequencing his albums for much of his career, constructing a lot of them with side lengths and flow in mind. Sides 1 of pretty much all his classic record albums (and 2 and 3 of **1999**) end memorably or need a record- or tape-flip-length pause before beginning the next tune. ATWIAD'S side 2 blew my mind a little the first time I played it with its (SPOILER ALERT) start-stop run-down-motor guitar burst to open "America." It made me think my record player was busted, and I'm sure a lot of folks checked their tape decks after hearing that, too. It's still a neat song-start but to much diminished effect when there's barely a moment after "Tambourine"'s tambourine ring fades.

In the same way, I'm glad they'll use the extra room on CD 1 to include the extended "America," but I hope they first extend the space after "Temptation" ends for those of us who still play the CDs.

I don't know, maybe I'm the guy who asks for half an ice cube because my coffee's ten degrees too hot, but I grew up with records and tapes, and musicians and producers in those days seemed to structure their work accordingly, so the purist in me wants those pauses back and I don't know how to restore them when I'm listening hands free. Maybe that will be the next big re-marketable music media product cycle: "DARK SIDE OF THE MOON {55th Anniversary CD & Digital Edition} Newly restored side break with needle-drop sound effect produced by Bernie Grundman!"

I'm with you. Sequencing and spacing make a world of difference. Not everyone seems to get this and we end up with crammed CDs.

So, in light of this, sometimes I just rip the material and make my own versions with spaces between the albums and the bonus tracks.

      It's a bit more work but it's satisfying. 🙂

Properly sequenced, I feel ATWIAD is Prince's greatest era. For years, I've combined CD and vinyl rips to create a solid double album experience I retitle "Paisley Park". 12-inch version noted with an X.

        DISC 1:
        Paisley Park (X)
        Raspberry Beret (X)
        Girl (X)
        Pop Life (X)
Around the World in a Day
4 the Tears in Your Eyes (Studio)
        Hello (X)
She's Always in My Hair (X)
        America (Live from Nice)

        Disc 2:
        Condition of the Heart
        Tamborine
        Temptation
        The Ladder
        America (X)

Ooh, that's really cool! I love doing that with artists/bands that have tons of remixes, b-sides and other non-album tracks for each album (ex: Depeche Mode or Garbage).

My tactic is a bit different, though: I keep the same sequence but none of the album versions - I replace the originals with remixes, demos, live versions, when available. If none are available, then I put a non-album track with a similar feel in its stead.

Basically, it creates an alternate version of the album. That way, no matter how often I play an album I don't get tired of it - there's always the alternate one that's kicking around to keep things fresh.

I'm going to have to try my hand at ATWIAD now. AND try out your version. 🙂

I'm actually cool with this, as Around The World In A Day is one of my least favorite of Prince's albums. Now if they did this with Love Symbol or The Gold Experience I'd be VERY unhappy. Regardless, another day one buy for me. Sorry to those who love this album and were hoping for more.

The estate was apparently unhappy with the sales of the previous SDEs for two of his biggest albums (Sign, Diamonds & Pearls), hence this paltry effort. ATWIAD was a US #1 album - if they can't give this the SDE treatment, you've got even less chance of anything from the 90s getting it. They already canned the Love Symbol/Diamonds combo idea in favour of the much delayed D&P SDE.

Outside of the regular Purple Rain churn, this minimum output is all I expect going forward. Shame on the estate, shame.

I don't understand why SDEs are the only way The Estate (namely financial asset managers) and The Fams are thinking about Vault material. SDE's are expensive to produce and their price tag dramatically limits the market for such purchases. There's enough material to release a single disc album of premium grade new material every 6-12 months for the next few generations. Why not constantly feed the appetite of core fans (while we're still alive) who want to buy this material, while also welcoming new (power) generations of listeners who might discover Prince with a newly discovered song versus an established hit. Vault tracks can also be made available to film and TV projects and be released on soundtracks as a way to crosspollinate fanbases. The Estate seems intent on NOT making money.

I think SDEs give a good representation of the era for each project/album, conextualizing them within his constant recording process. But I agree there are other options and they are only aimed at the super-fans. Smaller releases and strategic, selective licensing to other media is a good idea - it did wonders for Kate Bush's profile.

The sooner they get rid of that Mcmillan bozo the better. Pouring all their efforts in to that ridiculous albatross Purple Rain musical, putting the kibosh on the Netflix documentary that itself delayed any music releases for several years, and now this. Prince already fell out and broke ties with Mcmillan years before he passed, how he wormed his way back in I don't know, but it's going to be difficult to shake him free, this is his golden goose.

I do wish they had treated this album with a little more effort and care and a proper SDE release - it's a cool little record and there's a bit more content they could have used. That said, it's still a day one purchase for sure and hopefully soon we'll get a Blu-ray with enhanced audio and perhaps even a little video. This album deserved better, but I'm grateful anyway.

The estate has too many cooks in the kitchen and really botched the documentary by spiking it and denying us a chance to rediscover Prince on a deeper level. His legacy deserves better than what they've done, however, I appreciate the handful of individuals working hard to get something out to his fans.

Why is "4 the Tears in Your Eyes" (Album Version) marked as previously unavailable on CD? Is the version here different than the one on the 1985 CD releases (U.S., German, and Japanese) of the We Are the World album?

Thanks, John (and Bob and Keith just below me). Really needed to hear this today.

So much of our coverage of titles like these usually get posted well after most others' coverage due to a combination of wanting to offer something a little extra - whether that was the discographical info or a little bit of color about the album itself - or the usual nuttiness of life getting in the way. (My girls just started daycare, and Joe is putting together some really cool stuff, not just liner notes and packages but even more than that.)

When we started TSD, some labels were putting similar discographies in their press releases, and we just figured that's how everyone did it, hahaha. I know we get dinged sometimes for "repeating press releases" but I don't think that's the case at all. Most PR folks don't immediately have the additional info like who remastered what, if it's not in there to begin with, and it's hard to get everyone's attention to get those questions answered. When we do, it's because I really, really know someone well at the label who can answer.

This is all why, for instance, we don't yet have a post up on today's Frankie Goes to Hollywood announcement, which I'm stoked about - but I'm not 100% sure what's unreleased and what isn't (ZTT's discography is vast and confusing - often with similar mixes given new titles on different things); none of the official info or other reportage has clarified my questions, and I have no idea who's running PR for the set. I *will* find out, though, and will delight in getting that info right for our readers.

Anyway, this extremely long-winded comment is my way of saying thanks to all of you for keeping us honest and engaged. We really enjoy putting these pieces together for people to read and maybe dig some music they forgot about or never knew. We really appreciate you reading us as much as you can imagine and probably even a little more.

I'm amazed by the wealth of information here on TSD and am grateful for it. And even under scrutiny, since last I gathered WATW is out of print on CD (not sure about vinyl) that "previously unavailable" works on a technicality because at this very moment and for the previous few decades or so, it has been unavailable.
