Between 1980 and 1985, the group known as Change released six albums built around dance rhythms, big hooks, and powerful vocals. The group’s name was spot-on, as during that period, Change’s line-up was in constant flux – yet the quality of the music delivered consistently. On October 3, Omnivore Recordings will revisit Change’s debut album, 1980’s The Glow of Love, on CD in an expanded and remastered edition.

Originally appearing in Italy on Goody Music Records and throughout the rest of the world on the Warner Bros. label, The Glow of Love quickly gained traction in discos everywhere with its CHIC-inspired sound. Jacques Fred Petrus helmed the set which featured Davide Romani and Paolo Gianolo as composers, arrangers, and conductors; various other personnel contributed to the writing of the album’s six lengthy dancefloor anthems. Though the instrumental tracks were recorded in Italy, the vocals were cut at CHIC’s home base of the Power Station in New York City. The blend of Eurodisco and American styles proved to be a perfect match. Although he only appeared on two tracks, Luther Vandross – still on the verge of his own richly-deserved solo success – loomed large over the album. He supplied the typically velvety and passionate lead on the title song, ensuring that this was one dance record with deep soul. He also took the lead on the lithe, jazz-inflected “Searching.” But it was the buoyant “A Lover’s Holiday,” sung by Jocelyn Brown, Krystal Davis, Yvonne Lewis, and Alyson Williams that earned Change its only Top 40 hit on the U.S. Hot 100. (Moreover, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Disco chart and No. 4 on the Hot Soul Singles survey.)  Zachary Sanders (Schoolhouse Rock) provided the memorable ad libs on the track. Brown, later to make her mark on the Salsoul label as a voice of Inner Life, also was out front to lend her powerful pipes to “Angel in My Pocket” and “It’s a Girls’ Affair.” The Glow of Love reached No. 10 on the R&B Albums chart and made the top 30 of the Billboard 200.

Omnivore’s expanded reissue of The Glow of Love adds four bonus tracks: Jim Burgess and Tom Moulton’s unique mixes of “Searching” as well as the 12-inch extended version of “The Glow of Love” and Mike Maurro’s 2015 remix of “It’s a Girl’s Affair.”  Soul and gospel historian Tim Dillinger (Loleatta Holloway, Double Exposure) provides the detailed new liner notes.
